Chapter 14: #14-Duke Edmund’s Frustration!

Edmund Gerwyn was just on his way home from the palace, when he accidentally saw Penelope Askary running out of the boutique.

That blue hair would always be recognized by Edmund wherever the man was. Penelope’s pretty face looked pale, making Edmund frown. He ordered the coachman to stop the carriage and was intending to call Penelope when the blue-eyed man heard Sarah scream. Then, Edmund’s blue eyes widened and the man immediately drew his sword. Edmund ran as fast as he could toward Penelope who had fallen on the road and immediately killed the horse that was preparing to crash into the golden-eyed woman. The blood from the horse he was forced to kill got into Edmund’s handsome face so Edmund could smell its disgusting scent. However, Edmund did not care. What Edmund cared about right now was the safety of Penelope Askary who was shaking with fear in the arms of her maid, Sarah, who had just arrived.

"Your Majesty," called Edgar, one of Edmund’s knights who always followed the man. He gave Edmund his handkerchief and Edmund used it to wipe the blood on his face.

"Clean up this mess, Edgar," ordered Edmund. "And the people who saw this incident shut their mouths."

Edgar nodded, then looked down. He looked at Penelope and bowed. "Greetings to Princess Penelope. May Elleia’s light always be with you," he greeted in a polite tone. Then, the man decided to go and carry out Edmund’s order just now because he saw that Penelope was still shaking in her place and most likely wouldn’t return the greeting just now. Not that Edgar hoped that the blue-haired woman would return his greeting. He was just a knight and Penelope Askary was the princess of Askary’s family. If Penelope didn’t want to return someone else’s greeting, then she could do that.

"My Lady! Are you okay? Are you injured? Why are you suddenly crying and running, My Lady? That was very dangerous. Your poor maid’s heart is about to explode at the sight of you nearly getting hurt." Sarah wiped the tears off Penelope’s pretty face and remembered that Edmund Gerwyn was with them. She stared at the man, who was currently focusing his blue eyes on her lady. Sarah immediately bowed. "Greetings to His Highness Duke Edmund. May Elleia’s light always be with you. Duke Edmund, thank you for saving My Lady’s life."

Edmund glanced at Sarah and said nothing. His blue eyes stared sharp and firmly at Penelope.

"Penelope, we have to—"

"Sorry ... please, forgive me ...," said Penelope suddenly, with a shaking tone. The golden-eyed woman lowered her head, not wanting to look at Edmund. Her words, as well as her current attitude, clearly took Edmund by surprise. The man widened his eyes and clenched his fists at his sides. "Please don’t kill me, Duke... I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to... I didn’t hurt her. Forgive me."

Edmund Gerwyn became frustrated. Why was Penelope acting like this to him? This is even worse when compared to the beginning of their meeting when Penelope Askary just woke up from her coma after having a carriage accident. He approached Penelope. However, when Edmund had taken only five steps, the man froze. His jaw clenched and he gritted his teeth when he saw Penelope crying hysterically and suddenly kneeling before Edmund.

"Your Highness the Duke, please spare me! I’m innocent! I didn’t do anything to Isabella Lysander! I left as soon as I saw her earlier! Please, spare my life just this once! I swear, I will stay as far away from Isabella Lysander as I can. I will disappear from your sight, I—"

"What the hell are you doing, Penelope Askary?!" asked Edmund with a growl. The man knelt in front of Penelope and held her shoulders firmly. Sarah could only stand, staring confusedly at the two. The woman felt very sad and hurt to see her lady shaken and rambling like this. "Why are you kneeling in front of me and saying such nonsense?! Who will kill you?! You said I would kill you?! How could I possibly do that?!"

Penelope’s golden eyes met Edmund’s blue ones. The woman could see the frustration in Edmund’s eyes. Even though Penelope could hear the honesty in Edmund’s voice just now, Penelope still felt scared. She couldn’t control her heartbeat. If she had not died from being crushed by the horses earlier, maybe she would have died from a heart attack. Or, she would die of fright right at this moment. At least, that’s what Penelope thought.

"You’re going to kill me..." Penelope muttered. She raised her hands and her golden eyes stared at the trembling hands. "You’re going to kill me...," repeated the woman in a trembling tone.

Edmund didn’t know what to do. Seeing Penelope’s condition like this made the man frustrated. When Edmund took his hand from Penelope’s shoulder, intending to wipe the tears off Penelope’s face again and stroke her hair, Penelope’s body froze. The woman looked at Edmund wide-eyed and immediately tried to protect her face and head with her trembling hands.

"No! No! Forgive me! Don’t kill me!"

Edmund’s heart ached to see Penelope like this. The woman didn’t seem to recognize him. Then, Edmund heard something. The sound of people running. The man turned his head and saw Ethan Askary and Philleo Aaron running toward Penelope.

"Penny!" Ethan shouted in a panicked tone. The man immediately knelt in front of his sister who was crying and trembling with fear. Likewise with Philleo. The Knight was unable to escort Penelope today because he had to finish some business at the palace together with Ethan Askary, so the task of escorting Penelope was given to another knight. "Penny, what’s wrong with you? Oh, Lord! Your body is shaking violently, Penny! Your face is very pale and your body is very cold."

"Don’t kill me..." Penelope muttered again for the umpteenth time. She didn’t even notice the arrival of Ethan Askary and Philleo Aaron.

The two men were on their way back from the palace. They had met Edmund Gerwyn at the palace, during a meeting with the Crown Prince. However, Edmund went home first while Ethan was still talking to the Crown Prince. And just now, Ethan was very surprised and couldn’t believe it when he saw his beloved sister kneeling in the middle of the road, in front of Edmund Gerwyn, with her body trembling. Now, Ethan looked at Edmund with a cold and sharp gaze, when he heard Penelope’s muttering just now.

"His Highness Duke Edmund, what is going on here?" he asked in a cold tone. "Why did Penny beg you not to kill her?"

Not only Ethan, Philleo also glared at Edmund. He didn’t care if his actions had crossed the line.

Edmund growled and massaged the bridge of his nose. "Believe me, little Duke. I wondered in my heart too why your little sister’s behavior is so strange right now. I’m as frustrated as you are because Penelope was crying hysterically. I helped her from the horses," pointed Edmund toward the bloodied dead horses. "The moment they were about to run over your little sister. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Sarah. Your little sister’s maid was here when I saved Penelope."

"Wouldn’t it be better if we moved to a quieter and safer place?"

The sound made Penelope Askary flinch and freeze again. Her golden eyes now turned to the source of the sound. Golden eyes that were now wide open, when the woman saw the figure of the Crown Prince, Sebastian De Louis.

"Your Highness... the Crown Prince..." Penelope muttered. "Forgive me. Please, don’t kill me."

Hearing that, Sebastian De Louis frowned. He pointed at himself with a confused expression, then shook his head at Edmund, Ethan, and Philleo. "Hey, hey. I do not know anything. I do not do anything. Little duke, you know that I’ve been with you ever since. I’m here because I was on business elsewhere and happened to see Penelope in the middle of the road, just like you."

"You met Penelope not long ago, Tian," said Edmund coldly. He didn’t even use honorifics and mentioned the Crown Prince’s name by his nickname. Once again, this is due to the relationship between Edmund and Sebastian, who have been like brothers since childhood. Sebastian didn’t have a problem with that either. "Did you do something to make Penelope Askary get scared like this?"

"Ha!" he snorted. "Yeah, right! I just asked her to have tea together!"

"What for?" asked Edmund and Ethan together. The two men looked at each other and Ethan immediately looked away.

"I am the Crown Prince. I’m free to invite whoever I want," Sebastian grumbled. "Rather than interrogating me, wouldn’t it be better for you to focus on Penelope? Take her to a restaurant nearby and calm her down." Sebastian stared at one of the knights belonging to the imperial palace. "Jade, clear one of the restaurants right now. Say that the restaurant will be rented by me."

"Yes, Your Majesty," Jade replied. He ran into one of the restaurants and immediately carried out the task given by the Crown Prince.

"Penny, let’s go to that restaurant for a bit. You must calm yourself down." Ethan stood up and held his beloved little sister in his arms. He looked at the Crown Prince and lowered his head. "Your Highness, thank you for your assistance."

Sebastian just shrugged and followed Ethan who was carrying Penelope. Edmund did the same thing. He had to make sure Penelope was okay.

"Hey, what exactly happened?" asked Sebastian to Edmund who was walking beside him. "That woman was really frightened when she saw you and me."

"I don’t know either," sighed Edmund in frustration. "She asked me not to kill her and promised never to do anything to Isabella Lysander again."

"Isabel?" Sebastian frowned. "What does all this have to do with Isabel?"

Edmund snorted and shot Sebastian an annoyed look. "Tian, I told you that I am as confused as you are! When Penelope calms down, I’ll ask her what she meant by that. For now, I just want the woman to be okay and not look at me like I’m a monster."

Sebastian was just silent and stopped walking. He watched Edmund’s back as he walked away and entered the restaurant. The man frowned and rubbed his chin.

"Hmm? What is this feeling? Why was I suddenly annoyed and didn’t like seeing Ed worrying so much about Penelope? I just told him to find out about Penelope’s change in attitude after the carriage accident that time and Ed seemed to be interested in Penelope instead?" Sebastian took a deep breath and massaged the bridge of his nose. "Maybe I’m feeling tired."

Sebastian walking again. He looks relaxed and alert at the same time.

"Tristan."

Suddenly, a man in a black robe and black mask appeared. He was a shadow knight tasked with protecting the Crown Prince from the shadow.

"Greetings to His Highness the Crown Prince. May Elleia’s light be with you."

"Find out what happened between Penelope Askary and Isabella Lysander," said Sebastian in a firm tone. "And, I feel that someone is stalking Penelope from a distance. Since earlier, I could feel a sharp gaze from an unseen direction. I’m sure Duke Edmund was also aware of that, but couldn’t act because he had to protect Penelope. Capture the person, but don’t kill him. Interrogate him. If he doesn’t want to speak, then kill him."
