Refusing to Remarry: Mr. Hawthorne, You Are Out-Chapter 79: How Do You Plan to Repay Me?
The aim was pretty good—one of the eggs flew straight at Raine Sinclair’s face!
There was no time to dodge at all. In the split second Raine spaced out, Leon Grant spun around and pulled her into his arms!
It was as if a gust whipped up by his movement brushed gently across her eyes.
She couldn’t help but squint.
In the blink of an eye, he was already standing in front of her!
He looked so tall and steady, like no matter what happened in the future, he’d stand there and protect her just the same!
"Smack!" The rotten egg broke against the back of his neck, splattering a sticky mess everywhere.
Raine’s eyes instinctively widened, "You..."
She parted her lips, only to realize he was so close, his warm breath was spilling over her neck.
She froze, unsure how to react.
Aside from Jonas Hawthorne, she’d never been this intimate with another man.
Compared to her awkwardness, Leon Grant seemed completely unbothered.
"Are you alright?" His deep voice echoed right by her ear, as if hammering on her heart.
There was this indescribable strange feeling.
"I’m..." Raine scrambled out of her daze, seeing his spotless suit now ruined, and then remembered the night at the charity banquet, when he’d blocked the red wine for her just like this.
She thought to herself: I seriously owe him another favor...
"You’ve saved me again." Her pink lips parted softly, Raine murmured, her emotions a little tangled.
Following her words, Leon also remembered, and smiled leisurely, "So, how do you plan to thank me?"
Raine lifted her brows, just about to ask him what kind of thanks he wanted, when Sinclair Group’s security arrived and quickly got the situation under control.
The crowd of onlookers below were all dumbstruck.
Probably never expected things would take such a wild turn...
Only Leo Keane was howling. If it weren’t for so many people present, he’d probably be bawling by now!
"So gross..." His features twisted as he yanked bits of broken eggshell off himself, his hand shaking uncontrollably!
It’s like being touched by those weird liquids was sure to infect him with some unknown virus!
He tried desperately to wipe it away, but there was just no way to get all that egg gunk off...
His whole body screamed rejection—even though he couldn’t avoid it!
Raine watched him and, inexplicably, kind of wanted to laugh?
Just as she was about to lose it and burst out laughing, out of nowhere, she spotted a familiar figure amidst the crowd.
Was that... Jonas Hawthorne?
Raine froze on the spot.
Why was he here?
When did he arrive?
Was he here to watch her make a fool of herself?
The smile that had been fighting its way onto Raine’s lips suddenly froze, chilling at once.
She didn’t avoid Jonas Hawthorne’s gaze.
It was obvious he was looking straight at her, separated only by this sea of people and tangled drama.
No one could read anyone’s full expression, but they both knew—neither felt great.
So strange.
After living together with someone day in and day out, it takes just a single look to understand everything.
Jonas Hawthorne’s frustration was that, arriving just now, he saw Leon Grant stepping in for Raine at every turn.
She was supposed to be his woman. If she needed protecting, it should’ve been him!
But...
Now he had no right to hold her openly in his arms.
Even if another man was blatantly at her side right now, it was all perfectly justified.
And it was that "perfectly justified" that was completely roiling his previously calm heart!
Raine Sinclair, just what kind of spell have you put on me?
——
When Leon Grant turned a little, he saw Raine staring dazedly in one direction.
He followed her gaze, and—unsurprisingly—spotted Jonas Hawthorne.
Ever since he’d realized Jonas still cared about Raine, he’d been preparing himself for exactly this.
But since they were divorced now, that meant...fair game.
"Didn’t expect Mr. Hawthorne to show up, too." Leon smiled lightly, breaking the stare between Raine and Jonas.
"He’s probably here to watch me crash and burn, right?" Raine scoffed, then glanced at Leon’s clothes. "You should probably go change first."
Leon just shrugged and whipped off his suit jacket, revealing a spotless white shirt underneath. "This’ll do."
The crisp white shirt made him look even more handsome somehow.
Raine’s eyes lit up. "White suits you so well..."
She murmured, half to herself, but just then Mason Sullivan came rushing over, "Ms. Sinclair, are you alright?!"
He’d only been standing a little farther away—how did things go so wrong so fast?
He’d been worrying Raine’s first big event would end in her being publicly egged, totally wrecking her self-esteem, maybe leaving her devastated forever!
This was the perfect time for Raine to need his comfort and a hug!
But just as he charged over, he heard her complimenting Leon Grant on his white shirt?
What the hell?
The whole scene was practically out of control, yet she found time to check out some guy?
No way... Leon Grant wasn’t nearly as good-looking as he was!
If she was going to check someone out, it should be him!
Raine turned around and saw Mason Sullivan staring, face twitching, at her and Leon, like he’d been caught doing something embarrassing. Quickly she changed the subject, "I’m fine. Take Leo Keane to change clothes first; I think he’s about to cry."
Mason kept glaring at Leon Grant—once again, this guy got to play hero. If anyone should be crying, it was him!!
"Go on!" Raine caught him looking at Leon like he wanted to bite him, so she hurried him along again.
Mason finally, albeit resentfully, left the stage.
Just then, Easton Yancy came over with a microphone, whispered something in Raine’s ear. She blinked in surprise, then broke into a smile.
Taking the mic again, her voice was light and cheerful as she said, "What a special welcome gift, huh? Just wish it didn’t smell quite so strong. Luckily our event is outside, or the AC would be toast!"
The originally tense atmosphere suddenly lightened after Raine’s words.
Some of the less worried folks even started laughing along.
Some people were starting to see Raine in a new light.
When Raine took over Sinclair Group, almost everyone thought, "Great, another pretty face."
If she’d outdone herself handling the Toni mess last time, then this time...
Even putting everything else aside, to stay this calm after being publicly egged at a huge event—that was hard to beat!
After the crowd laughed, Raine looked at the ringleader, that scrawny guy, and called out, "Hey, Four-Eyes, your name’s Gavin Lewis, right? My assistant just checked—your name’s not on the Sea of Clouds Heights owners list, and that contract looks fake to me."
As soon as she said that, the whole place paused; everyone shot Gavin Lewis a startled look!
Including Leo Keane.
He’d already been miserable, but hearing the guy was a fraud—and looking at himself covered in rotten egg—he seriously wanted to murder him!
Just as he shifted to move, Raine’s clear voice rang out from the stage, "Keane Family’s projects are top-notch here in Sedonia, not something you can smear with a few careless words!"
Leo Keane was stunned.
Huh?
Wasn’t this guy originally cursing at Sinclair Group?
How did this suddenly become Gavin Lewis vs. the Keane Family instead?
