Chapter 52: Chapter 52: What I Say to My Ex-Wife Is None of Your Business

In the darkness of night, the three of them standing together looked unexpectedly warm and cozy.

But Jonas Hawthorne’s heart was stabbed without warning.

In the distance, Raine still held a suit in her hand and said easily, "I was just returning Leon’s jacket—I brought you along too, didn’t I?"

"Brought me along?" Mason Sullivan seemed unsatisfied with this treatment, and huffed in protest, "Raine, next time, bring me myself! And bring Leon Grant along if you must!"

Right after saying this, he realized something was off and quickly amended, "Actually, it’s better not to bring him at all!"

Raine rubbed her forehead. "Alright, you had dinner and drank tea. Go home, will you?"

Mason stood there stubbornly, glancing at Leon Grant, "He hasn’t left yet!"

The meaning was obvious—Mason wouldn’t leave if Leon Grant didn’t!

Who knew what Leon might try once Mason left?

Raine looked at Leon as well, and soon heard him say, "Thanks for having me tonight."

"Don’t mention it! I haven’t even thanked you for lending me your suit!" Raine smiled and handed the jacket over.

When Leon took it, Mason was glaring at him right from the side.

This guy really knows what he’s doing!

Why didn’t he think to lend Raine his own jacket that night?!

Seems like he still needs to learn a thing or two!

But to learn from your own love rival—kind of a blow to the pride, you know?

Leon took back the freshly laundered jacket, a faint smile in his eyes. "It’s this jacket’s honor."

"So cheesy," Mason muttered under his breath, though honestly, he thought it was just nauseatingly mushy!

Raine shot him a glare. "You two, both of you, go, it’s late!"

She was already getting sleepy—how were they not sleepy yet?

Mason didn’t answer, just looked at Leon. "Did you hear that? Raine’s telling you to get lost!"

His tone was loaded, like he was really saying: "No matter how smooth you talk, you still have to leave, just like me!"

Leon shot him a glance. "I still have something to discuss with Raine."

"What business could you possibly have? Say it now, right here!" Mason shot back, not budging an inch.

Raine was actually a bit curious. "What’s up?"

"The bidding arrangements," Leon replied.

Hearing this, Mason was even more interested. "Then I should definitely be here! I’m Raine’s secretary!"

Leon frowned, not expecting this guy to be so stubborn, then added, "This concerns the Grant Family. I don’t want outsiders involved."

He was outright freezing Mason out as the "outsider."

"What do you mean by that?" Mason’s face turned sour instantly.

The look on his face said he could roll up his sleeves and start a fight any second. Raine quickly stepped in, "Alright, family matters from the Grant Family aren’t meant for everyone to hear! Don’t be so stubborn. Didn’t you say today was exhausting? Go home and get some rest! We have to see President Ford together tomorrow!"

Mason’s eyes darted, but not wanting to make things hard for Raine, he changed tack. "Fine, just finish up and hurry home. It’s cold; you’re not wearing much. Don’t catch a chill!"

"I know! Now go!" Raine pushed Mason toward his car.

Truly stubborn as hell!

Mason dragged his feet, looking worried with every step, turning back three times for every step, "I’m telling you, don’t talk too long with him, Raine, he—"

Bang!

Raine simply shut the car door, cutting Mason off mid-sentence.

Soon the engine started, but Mason just wouldn’t quit and lowered the window to stick his head out, "Finish up quick and get home! It’s not safe out here!"

Raine’s eye twitched. They were literally right outside her house!

But just then, Leon Grant’s voice drifted to her ears, low and tinged with amusement, "Mason really cares about you."

"He’s just like he was as a kid!" Raine shook her head—there really was no dealing with him.

After gathering her thoughts, she looked at Leon, growing more serious. "What did you want to talk to me about?"

The public bidding was extremely important to her. She couldn’t afford any mistakes, so naturally, she had to pay attention.

Leon replied, "I heard that in past years Sinclair Group’s projects were always subcontracted to the Keane Family. If the Keane Family wins again, even if it’s just a coincidence, it’ll raise suspicion."

"That... I’ve considered that too." Raine nodded. She wasn’t clueless about that possibility.

Even so, she couldn’t manipulate or rig anything.

"If the Keane Family legitimately wins, then they deserve to get the project." Her gaze was firm, not a hint of hesitation.

Hearing her say that, Leon relaxed. "If that’s the case, then—"

Before Leon could finish, a cold voice suddenly came from behind the two, weighed down with suppressed fury.

"Raine Sinclair."

Just three words, but the tone was so dangerously low it ripped a gash through the silence of the night that encompassed the three of them.

Just by hearing that voice, Raine didn’t even have to turn around—she knew who it was.

It’s just...

She couldn’t figure out—why would Jonas Hawthorne be here?

When she looked at Jonas in disbelief, she found him staring at her too, his dark eyes clouded over as if by a storm, concealing all his emotions.

At this point, Leon also noticed Jonas.

He furrowed his brow—obviously not expecting Jonas to show up at this hour.

In the silence between the three, Jonas Hawthorne had already walked right up to Raine.

"I need to talk to you."

Raine: "..."

Was it because she hadn’t answered his call earlier?

But with his personality, he’d never meddle in her business. Why would he turn up out of nowhere?

She cut in coldly, "There’s nothing for me to say to you, Mr. Hawthorne."

Before Jonas could reply, Leon, standing nearby, stated, "It’s late. I wonder what Mr. Hawthorne wants to say to my girlfriend?"

Given that earlier today, he and Raine had kept up their act in front of the crowd, he had to stick with the role for now.

Also, just like Mason didn’t want Leon hanging around Raine all the time, Leon didn’t want Jonas to keep pestering her either.

Who knew Jonas wouldn’t back down? He turned to Leon, his voice sinking even lower, "What I say to my ex-wife is none of your business."

The hidden force in those words swept toward Leon like a tidal wave!

Leon matched him with equal steel, not retreating in the slightest. "You two are divorced. You shouldn’t keep harassing her!"

"So what? She’ll always have been my wife!" Jonas’s lips curled in a sudden, domineering sneer. Every word was possessiveness itself!

Raine stared at him, dumbfounded—a part of her heart skipped violently!

He actually... still remembers she was once his wife?

Ha.

How laughable.

Are all men like this?

Once they’ve had you, they don’t want you—but they don’t want anyone else to have you either?

Is seeing her and Leon together really enough to make him so furious?
