Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Let’s Just Call It a Doomed Fate

The one who should have been embarrassed was Raine Sinclair, but because Leon Grant stepped in to protect her, she instead became the object of envy!

Such a handsome sidestep, such unwavering protection—who wouldn’t be moved by that?!

Yet, a new question arose.

Why did Leon Grant dance with Raine Sinclair?

And even shield her from the red wine?

What exactly is their relationship?

Mason Sullivan, watching from the sidelines, finally let out a sigh of relief!

Although Raine was briefly held by someone, it was for her safety, after all—he could barely tolerate it!

Lily Sinclair, whose heart had been hanging in suspense, also began to relax.

But as she watched Leon Grant holding her cousin so tightly, a shadow of gloom flickered in her eyes.

Jonas Hawthorne, on the other side, also halted in his forward steps at that moment.

Noticing his movement, Leo Keane blinked in utter confusion—

Was this guy really about to rush over just now?

For what... to protect Raine Sinclair?

Leo Keane shook his head. If their divorce was so ruthless, shouldn’t he be charging ahead to throw two more glasses of wine at Raine Sinclair right now?

Yet, the way Jonas Hawthorne’s sharp, eagle-like eyes narrowed in danger, it didn’t seem like that at all?

Puzzled, he then heard Jonas Hawthorne lower his voice and say, "Go investigate that waiter."

"Huh?" Leo Keane was completely stunned. "Why investigate him?"

"Something’s wrong," Jonas Hawthorne replied.

Though he wouldn’t admit it, the moment he saw his ex-wife dancing with someone else, his eyes never left her.

The waiter had been extremely close to Raine Sinclair at the time, and the whole stumble and wine-splashing action was odd—Jonas Hawthorne recognized it instantly.

Outside of emotional matters, he was an exceptionally calm man—decisive and ruthless, having battled through countless business wars. No one could hide, whether human or ghost, before him.

Even though Leo Keane couldn’t decipher what Jonas Hawthorne was really thinking, he still turned to investigate.

——

On the dance floor, Raine Sinclair gradually regained her composure.

She blurted out reflexively, "Are you okay?"

"Are you okay?" Leon Grant happened to ask as well.

The two of them spoke almost in unison.

The repeated words inexplicably dissolved a bit of the estrangement between them.

"I’m so sorry, so sorry... I tripped on something just now!" The waiter was already frantically apologizing!

The wine might not have spilled on Raine Sinclair, but it had splashed on their young master!

Who would have thought the young master would wade into these muddy waters?!

Only then did Leon Grant turn to look behind him.

His cool gaze swept over the waiter’s face, voice sharp and cold, "How could you be so careless? What if Ms. Sinclair had been hurt?!"

The Grant Family is hosting tonight’s banquet.

If a scandal breaks out, how will they maintain their standing in Sedonia in the future?!

The waiter broke out in a cold sweat!

He knew he’d get scolded for taking this job, but he never expected the young master to be this furious!

Would he lose his job because of this?

At that moment, Lily Sinclair and Mason Sullivan also hurried over.

"Sis, are you alright?"

"Ms. Sinclair, are you okay?"

Both faces were filled with the same worry and anxiety.

"I’m fine..." Raine Sinclair shook her head slowly, but her eyes lingered on Leon Grant’s soaked back.

His suit was dark, so even though it was wet, it wasn’t very obvious, but the shade was still slightly different.

"Mr. Grant, you should go change your clothes. You don’t want to catch a cold."

She offered the concern—after all, it was because of her.

Hearing this, Leon Grant turned back, and his first words weren’t about himself, but rather a faintly apologetic, "Sorry for frightening you."

"It’s nothing."

Raine Sinclair replied politely, though in her heart, she found new respect for this man.

Very soon, a supervisor arrived with a fresh towel, apologizing repeatedly to Leon Grant, and promptly ordered the clumsy waiter to leave.

"Why are you still standing there? Get out!"

"Yes, yes..." The man bowed and practically ran off in a panic.

Raine Sinclair scrutinized him closely, clearly sensing something unusual, but didn’t voice it.

After all, this was the Grant Family’s home—if things escalated, it would do her no good.

The dance floor soon returned to order. Leon Grant went upstairs to change, while Raine Sinclair stepped aside, sweeping a subtle glance around her.

When her gaze passed over a woman in a red dress, she distinctly noticed that woman’s eyes dodge.

Her brows arched slightly as doubt began to surface in Raine Sinclair’s heart.

The Grant Family is hardly some minor household; even the least conspicuous of their staff must be carefully vetted, let alone waiters serving at a banquet like this.

Claiming to have tripped in the middle of the dance floor felt like a feeble excuse.

They had better not be targeting her—otherwise...

She would show no mercy.

"What’s wrong?" Mason Sullivan noticed Raine Sinclair’s gaze lingering on some spot and asked instinctively.

"Follow that waiter and see who he talks to," Raine Sinclair whispered in a low voice.

Mason Sullivan paused, then came to his senses. Avoiding the others’ attention, he quietly slipped away.

Lily Sinclair too had spotted the woman in the red dress. Remembering what happened just now, she huffed angrily in Raine Sinclair’s ear, "Sis, they were just talking bad about you—I heard everything!"

"Oh?" Raine Sinclair smiled thoughtfully. Looked like there was indeed something off beneath the surface.

"Sis, you’re pregnant too, but they—" Lily Sinclair was frustrated, yet the things those people said were so nasty she couldn’t even repeat them!

But Raine Sinclair didn’t care about any of it. She just waved her hand lightly, "Don’t bother with people who don’t matter. And about my pregnancy—don’t tell anyone."

Only her family knew about it. She especially didn’t want to have any more ties to the Hawthorne Family over it.

"But..." Lily Sinclair bit her lip. "Sis, I just think it’s so unfair to you!"

"Fair or not, it doesn’t matter." Raine Sinclair’s lashes drooped gently, a faint smile on her lips tinged with a hint of bitterness. "Let’s just call it a fateful mistake."

As the words left her mouth, Jason Ford’s voice sounded from ahead.

"Mr. Hawthorne? It’s been a long time!"

Clearly, he wasn’t speaking to Raine Sinclair.

She turned automatically, only to discover Jonas Hawthorne had somehow slipped up behind her.

And he wasn’t far at all—had he heard everything she’d just said? 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

Raine Sinclair frowned deeply, but thankfully Jonas Hawthorne didn’t look her way, acting as if he hadn’t noticed her at all as he greeted Jason Ford, "President Ford, how have you been?"

A polite smile played over his strikingly handsome face, his deep black eyes betraying nothing of his true feelings.

Raine Sinclair stepped aside, not wanting to be seen with him.

But what she didn’t know was that as soon as she turned away, Jonas Hawthorne’s grip on his wineglass tightened, his knuckles turning white.

A fateful mistake... is it?
