Refusing to Remarry: Mr. Hawthorne, You Are Out-Chapter 107: Liking Someone This Much for the First Time
The caller on the other end was William Jennings’s grandson, York Jennings.
He and Raine Sinclair grew up together. Knowing his sister had gone through so much, he really wanted to stick up for her!
"Yes, Grandpa."
He hung up after he spoke.
In the yard.
Raine Sinclair had just dialed Mason Sullivan’s number.
"Beep... beep..."
After just two rings, the call was picked up.
"What do you want?" His tone was still a little petty.
"Where are you?" Raine asked with a sweet smile, like coaxing a sulking little brother.
Mason was driving, and glanced at the road sign ahead, "Lunara Road."
Usually he would chatter away, but today his answers were clipped and short. Raine knew he must still be mad, so she soothed, "Okay, I remember, I meant for when we grow up and I have to marry you."
"..." Mason paused, his irritation suddenly gone, and a smile crept onto his lips.
But he didn’t forgive her right away. Instead, he snorted and put on airs, "You only just remembered!"
"Sorry, sorry!" Raine giggled again, "Really, thank you so much for today. Tomorrow morning I’m off, and in the afternoon I’m signing with Adler Construction and Leo Keane. You should come too."
"Pfft, now you finally know how important I am?" Mason cocked his neck with pride.
Even if Raine couldn’t see him in person, she still felt his smugness through the phone!
Raine’s eye twitched. This boy really knew how to push boundaries!
But considering how much he’s helped her, Raine coaxed him again, "Yes, yes, you’re super important!"
"Now that’s more like it!" Mason finally cheered up, his tone returned to its usual relaxed and gentle warmth. "Raine, I saw you didn’t look well earlier. Why don’t you postpone the signing? Your grandpa came all the way to see you. Spend more time with him."
"Uh... what about the contract?" Raine remembered how anxious Leo Keane was about the deal. If they pushed it back, wouldn’t he lose sleep over it?
Mason wasn’t bothered at all, "We already announced it to the media. It’s basically a done deal. One day earlier or later—what’s the difference?"
"You’re right." Raine nodded. "Let’s do it the day after tomorrow then!"
After they agreed, Raine hung up.
When she returned to the dining room, her parents had just come home.
She asked why, and found out they’d gone to her second uncle’s place.
Lily Sinclair’s parents had arranged a marriage for her, but she was completely against it and argued with her family. Raine’s parents had gone over to mediate.
As soon as Raine heard about it, she immediately sent Lily a message to comfort her.
[Lily, are you okay?]
Right then, Lily was hugging her knees, curled up on her bed, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
Her phone vibrated, and she glanced at it, saw it was a message from her cousin. She didn’t reply.
She’d always been the well-behaved, obedient little girl. Since birth, everything from what she ate and wore to her major and career had been arranged by her parents.
Even though she felt a little resentful, she never voiced it. She just didn’t want to disappoint her parents.
She used to think nothing of it, but after seeing Leon Grant propose to her cousin at the hospital that afternoon, all the stuff she’d been suppressing inside started piling up, piling up.
After she got home, her parents brought up the blind date again, and she finally snapped, a total meltdown...
Maybe normally it would’ve been no big deal, but to her, it was the last straw.
For the first time, she lost her temper with her parents. For the first time, she broke things...
In the heat of the moment, she didn’t think much of it. But when she saw her cousin’s parents had come over too, she realized she wasn’t the same person anymore.
Tears still streaking down her face, she’d run upstairs and cried until now.
No matter what her parents said outside her door, she didn’t listen.
She was completely lost in her emotional abyss.
And she also realized her attitude toward her cousin was changing—maybe just a little, but still...
Maybe it was jealousy?
Her dad, Samuel Sinclair, was Raine Sinclair’s father’s younger brother.
Back when the Sinclair Family passed down the family business, they gave it to the eldest legitimate son.
Even though their own branch did okay under Evan Sinclair’s protection, the Sinclair Group was never truly theirs.
Raine Sinclair was always better than her—at school, in looks, even her figure...
She couldn’t compare to Raine in anything.
And now, even the guy she’d finally fallen for was madly in love with Raine, going so far as to propose to her in front of everyone.
How could she not be jealous?
She couldn’t help but picture the two of them together, like a black hole sucking her in, consuming her thoughts.
She knew she should fight it, escape somehow, but she just couldn’t...
She didn’t know how long she’d been lying there before suddenly getting a new friend request.
She opened it and saw the note: [This is Candace Ford]
Lily’s brows furrowed—why was The Mistress reaching out to her?
Her first instinct was to reject it, but... after hesitating, she accepted the request.
Was this woman trying to start trouble again?
Once the request was accepted, Candace sent a message.
[I saw you at the hospital this afternoon.]
Lily was startled, then quickly replied, [So what?]
She didn’t think much of Candace—just a mistress who’d stolen her cousin’s husband!
Jealous or not, at least she was clear about right and wrong.
She didn’t expect Candace’s next message to hit her right in the soul.
[You like Leon Grant?]
The instant Lily read it, her heart skipped a beat!
She had no idea how Candace knew, or why she’d add her just to ask about this?
Seeing Lily not respond, Candace messaged again.
[Don’t worry. I’m not here to expose you—I want to help you.]
Lily raised an eyebrow, then replied, [Help me?]
This wicked woman—what kind of scheme is she up to?
With those thoughts, Lily kept the conversation going.
Unbeknownst to her, Candace had already seen right through all her little secrets.
Twisting her phone in her hand, Candace smirked coldly.
"Little girl, not refusing is basically admitting it. I already pushed your cousin out of the picture, so what hope do you have, little girl who’s never even been in the world? Judging by your expression today, this must be your first crush, right? The first is special—the obsession goes deeper. So it’ll be much easier for me to use that..."
After analyzing with smug satisfaction, Candace finally looked down at her phone and typed: [This isn’t something we can talk about in a few messages. Let’s meet up tomorrow? We should really talk.]
