Chapter 50: The Jiang family (2)

"I’m just giving you a fair warning. The Zhao family doesn’t have a good impression of our Jiang family now, and no matter what I say, Uncle Reese holds a grudge against us. Either you return that brooch to me or compensate me with money."

Adrienne was blatantly lying, but who would dare call her out? She was intent on destroying the entire Jiang family and collecting the debts they owed to her and her mother. She didn’t mention the brooch to her Uncle Reese, but she was sure as hell he would be furious if he knew what had happened.

"Sierra, you better return your Aunt Rosemary’s brooch to Addie. It’s not right to ask for an heirloom of the Zhao family for a birthday gift. I’ll give you the money you can spend on shopping instead."

Sierra’s expression turned ugly. She repeatedly cursed Adrienne in her heart. When she first saw that emerald brooch, she fell in love with it. Alas, since it was owned by her Aunt Rosemary, who would dare to ask her for it? When her Uncle Lewis remarried, only then did she dare ask for the emerald brooch. Who knew that this simpleton, Adrienne Jiang, would ask her to return it today?

"But Grandpa..." She whined, knowing that her pleas could easily move the old man.

"Is this really necessary?" Old Madam Jiang said with displeasure as she looked at Adrienne’s face. "Since your father has already given it to Sierra, you can just let her have it."

Adrienne turned her gaze at her. Old Madam Jiang’s smile vanished as soon as she saw Adrienne who was now wearing a haughty expression. She was already well over seventy years old, but she still wore colors suitable for the younger ages and accessorized it with expensive jewelry she received from Adrienne’s mother. She was a person who was very particular about appearances, and Adrienne knew why her grandmother was like this. 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎

In truth, Old Madam Jiang was her grandfather’s second wife. Just like Camilla, she became the second wife after her grandfather’s wife died from an unknown cause. In her previous life, Adrienne could clearly remember how this old woman supported Camilla and Elise in chasing her out of their household.

"Should I ask for everything my mother has given you then?" Adrienne said blankly.

In the next second, Old Madam Jiang’s voice resounded within the household as she shouted at Adrienne.

"You unfilial granddaughter, you better get down on your knees now!"

Adrienne sneered in her heart. This Old Madam Jiang was really shameless. Did she want to trample her using her seniority? It was no wonder this old woman got along well with Camilla Yan. Indeed, birds of the same feathers flock together.

Her Aunt Maryam, Ayla’s mother, came and held Old Madam’s arm.

"Mother, please calm down!" She then looked at Adrienne. "Addie, quick and listen to your grandmother! Do not anger her further!"

Adrienne looked at the female before her. Ayla took after her Aunt Maryam - even her temperament was the same. Her Aunt Maryam was born into a family of scholars, thus, she was known for her graceful beauty and soft-spoken attitude.

Aunt Maryam stiffened as she saw the look on Adrienne’s face. Her niece looked the same, but something about her was different. Adrienne had shed her usual timid appearance and impression of stupidity. The young woman before her looked like someone who was shrewd.

"I’d like to see who dares to bully our dearest Addie in my presence." A dangerous low voice came from behind Adrienne, and she turned around only to see her Uncle Reese standing with a menacing aura around him.

"Uncle Reese? Why are you here?" She asked confusedly.

Reese Zhao strode towards her and handed her a manila envelope Adrienne didn’t notice earlier.

"You left before Father could hand these documents to you. Didn’t we tell you that we are transferring this estate to your name? These are only certified copies since we keep the original deed for safety." His face slightly turned calm when talking to Adrienne, but he immediately turned menacing once he regarded the rest of the Jiang family.

Reese Zhao let out a cold laugh. "I see. So this is how the Jiang family treats the benevolent daughter of our Zhao family."

Waylen Jiang stood up and regarded their surprise guest. He was the youngest among the Jiang brothers but the tallest and looked dignified.

"Brother Reese, there must be some kind of misunderstanding here..."

"Misunderstanding?" Reese glanced at his niece and held her shoulder, trying to placate her. "Your Jiang daughter dared to steal an heirloom from our Zhao family, is this not right? Since when was our Zhao family so lenient that we’ll hand over our things to strangers? If that’s the case, you might as well hand over your Jiang Corporation to others!"

Adrienne tried to suppress the smile threatening to spread on her lips but failed. Her Uncle Reese didn’t mince his words at all. He was blatantly threatening the Jiang family without hesitation.

"Addie, if you cannot tolerate living with them, you can stay with us. However, I can also tell that you have disrespected your elders. I expected more from you, Adrienne."

Adrienne lowered her head. "I apologize, Uncle. I’m young and immature, thus, I was easily swayed by my emotions. But what happened today was a lesson. I will restrict my words from now on."

These words stunned Reese Zhao and everyone else in the house. It was the first time Adrienne had shown her submissive side since her eighteenth birthday. It seemed to them that she would only listen to Reese now. No one was certain whether it was because he was a Zhao or because of his intimidating presence as a military officer.

"As for my sister’s brooch..." Reese faced Lewis. "In case you forgot, you signed a prenuptial agreement with my sister. If you remember it, then you should know that you don’t have a say regarding anything my sister owns. Or do you need a reminder?"
