Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 430: Adrienne of the Past (2)
As days passed without Adrienne regaining her consciousness, the more her husband and her family worried. They sought out multiple medical opinions and explored every possible treatment option, hoping for a miracle that would bring Adrienne back to them. Each passing day felt like an eternity as their concern grew into a constant state of anxiety and despair.
Lewis Jiang was already detained in jail, and what he’d done before the incident had already reached Lennox. According to the report, Lewis had sought a monk to read his fate and had received a dire prediction that his actions would lead to tragedy. In his despair to avoid death, he chose to end his daughter’s life instead.
Lennox did not believe in superstition but respected his elders, who believed in the power of fate and destiny. He couldn’t help but wonder if there was any truth to the monk’s prediction or if it was simply a coincidence. Regardless, Lennox knew that he had to find a way to bring Adrienne back and bring justice to her father for his unimaginable actions.
"Addie, when are you going to wake up? You’ve already been asleep for far too long," Lennox whispered, his voice filled with desperation. He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face, his heart heavy with guilt and regret. He couldn’t bear the thought of losing her forever and was determined to do whatever it took to bring her back.
He sat on their massive bed and held her in his arms, desperate to see her awake. There were many things Lennox wanted to tell her, especially to apologize for his shortcomings. He knew that time was running out, but he would never give up on her.
The moonlight streamed through the window, casting a soft glow on her peaceful face. Lennox’s mind raced with memories of their shared laughter and love, fueling his determination to find a way to save her. He vowed to fight for her, even if it meant delving into the darkest corners of his soul.
Suddenly, Lennox felt someone grabbed his arm. Startled, he lowered his head to look down, and staring right back at him was Adrienne, who gave him a wide-eyed look.
Lennox was overjoyed and was about to call someone, but his excitement turned into confusion as he realized that Adrienne was panicking in his arms and looking at him with fear. She pulled away from his arms and curled beside the headboard, trembling in fear.
Lennox’s heart sank as he tried to understand what had caused Adrienne’s sudden change in demeanor. He gently approached her, his voice filled with concern, and asked, "Addie, what happened? Please tell me what’s wrong, love."
Adrienne was looking at him as if she didn’t recognize him. She wrapped her arms above her head and pressed her body against the headboard, trying to create a physical barrier between them. Lennox’s worry deepened as he realized that something truly traumatic must have occurred to cause such a drastic reaction from Adrienne.
His wife mumbled something incoherent, forcing Lennox to lean closer to hear what she was saying. He questioned whether the attack by her father traumatized her or if there had been some other unreported incident that had upset her.
"Please. Please don’t hurt me. I will listen to you from now on. Don’t hurt me anymore." He heard Adrienne say in a desperate tone.
Lennox was astounded as Adrienne curled into a ball as if trying to protect herself from an invisible threat. The fear in her voice and the way she trembled made Lennox realize that her trauma ran deep, and he couldn’t help but wonder what had led to this level of distress.
"Addie," Lennox called after her softly and gently patted her head. "Don’t be afraid. No one can hurt you while I’m here."
"Honey, I admit I was wrong. Don’t be angry, okay? Please don’t take Dylan away from me. I promise I’ll change." She continued to speak in between her sobs.
Adrienne lifted her head and looked at him, but she seemed to see someone else through him. She didn’t recognize the person before her and leaned back in fear.
"Alistair Han! How dare you treat me like this?! How could you do this to me?! Where did you hide my mom?!" She yelled at him.
Lennox’s entire body trembled as understanding dawned on him. He realized that Adrienne was suffering from amnesia and had no recollection of their relationship or her mother. Panic gripped his heart as he tried to figure out how to help her regain her memories and trust in him again.
He then recognized that the Adrienne before him wasn’t the Adrienne he fell in love with and married to, but was the Adrienne of her past life. This was the weak and vulnerable Adrienne, who lost not only her life but her everything. This was Adrienne, whom his wife tried to protect and shield from her painful past.
"Addie, can’t you recognize me, love? It’s me, Lennox. Your husband." He whispered to his wife, hoping there was still a glimmer of recognition in her eyes. Lennox’s heart ached as he saw the confusion and fear in Adrienne’s gaze. He knew then that the husband she knew wasn’t him but Alistair Han.
Lennox’s heart was breaking, not because Adrienne couldn’t recognize him but because of the fear and helplessness in her eyes. Adrienne had endured this in the past, and she didn’t have anyone to turn to for support. She was huddled in the corner; her eyes were empty, and her expression was filled with terror.
Seeing her tremble like a helpless child made him hate not only Alistair Han but also himself. He hated how the Lennox Qin in her past wasn’t able to protect her from the pain and suffering she had experienced. He also hated himself for allowing Lewis Jiang to get through to him and hurt his wife.
The incident with her father might have triggered a memory of her past. It was clear that Adrienne’s traumatic past still haunted her, and the incident with her father had likely resurfaced those painful memories. Lewis Jiang’s actions had not only harmed her physically but also reopened emotional wounds that she had been trying to heal from for years.
