Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 43: Even a Vicious Tiger Won’t Eat Its Cubs (1)
’Lewis, you dog! I’ll make you pay for humiliating my sister and bullying my niece!’ Reese thought as he hugged Adrienne, hiding his eyes that had turned cold.
The more he imagined the suffering his sister and Adrienne endured over the years, the more he was upset with himself. He should have defied his father’s wishes a long time ago and protected them. With him around, Lewis Jiang and the rest of his family wouldn’t have dared to bully his sister and Adrienne.
Adrienne opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything in response. Since she had never met her uncle in her previous life, she had no expectations of him. If only she had met him before, perhaps she wouldn’t have to lose everything.
"Many thanks, Uncle..." She answered, her eyes shining with tears. It would have been nice to have someone to rely on, but she didn’t dare to raise her hopes for fear that Reese Zhao would disappoint her.
"Still, allow me to lessen the burden in your heart, Mister Zhao." She told Old Master Zhao. She then glanced at Uncle Mo, who understood her intention. The old man took the paper from her hand and handed it to Old Master Zhao.
Old Master Zhao looked at what was written inside the paper and saw an address from the countryside elegantly written. He glanced at Adrienne’s impassive face. He couldn’t believe his Zhao family was able to produce a child as sly and cold as she was. One could see how much she hated the Jiang family.
Based on Adrienne’s words, she and her mother didn’t lead a happy life with the Jiangs, but why did Rosemary not seek help from them? Was she ashamed and regretted her decision? Was she afraid that the Jiang family would try to seek more favors from them if she did?
What Reese said was right. They couldn’t allow Rosemary and Adrienne to suffer any further than they had. Even if he had to exhaust all his might to save his precious daughter, Old Master Zhao would do it. He didn’t know how many years or days he had left to live, but he wouldn’t allow himself to die with regret.
Adrienne then joined the rest of the Zhao family for lunch. Old Madam Zhao was thrilled to have her granddaughter at home. She could barely control her excitement and didn’t leave Adrienne’s side. She was impressed by Adrienne’s calm temperament and gracious mannerisms, befitting a young miss like her.
"Your mother has taught you well. This old woman is glad to see you after a long wait." She shed some tears, thinking of the daughter she had been missing for a long time.
Adrienne smiled. "It’s me who is unfilial, Grandma. I should have visited way earlier. I just didn’t know that you’d been waiting."
The father and son could only watch the interaction between them. Adrienne answered each question tossed by Old Madam Zhao, leaving out her and her mother’s grievances from the Jiang family. They were both moved and reassured, seeing she was sparing the matriarch from the heartache.
Once they were done with lunch, the matriarch unwillingly left Adrienne with Reese and her husband. Reese took this chance and held Adrienne’s arm.
"I have something else to say, Addie." He told her, then eyed his father.
Adrienne could only follow the two men to a private study, where she saw a massive painting of the Zhao family displayed on the wall. Her mother was already a teenager in the picture, while her Uncle Reese was a handsome young boy. Seeing her mother’s smiling face, Adrienne realized why her father always had an irritated expression whenever he saw her. Her striking resemblance to her mother had become more prominent as she aged. 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
"Addie, you said your father brought Cayden Jiang when your mother gave birth to a stillbirth son?" Her Uncle Reese suddenly asked, pulling her back to reality.
She turned and looked at the man seated on the couch before her. Reese Zhao’s face showed that he wouldn’t take any nonsense from anyone, and he had an aura of a noble person - one that she had never seen on any members of the Jiang family.
She nodded her head, not understanding his intention this time.
"That’s what Mother Wang told me. She has been working for us for a long time along with Uncle Mo. If there’s anything, she should be more aware of my mother’s condition and welfare while she was in the Jiang household. Uncle, is there a reason why you are asking me this?"
And then a thought crossed her mind, and Adrienne’s face turned ashen. She stumbled back and would have fallen if it wasn’t for Uncle Mo catching her before she did.
"Y-you... you don’t mean..." She eyed her uncle in shock.
No... she and her older brother were Lewis Jiang’s flesh and blood. How could he do this to them?!
Reese clasped his hands together and hardened his jaws. He didn’t want to think of the worst, but hearing Adrienne’s words earlier, the thought kept playing on his mind. A person like him didn’t believe in coincidences.
"Seeing how cruel your father and Camilla Yan are, I can’t help but think that they might have something to do with your older brother’s death. Did anyone see the stillbirth baby? Do you know if your parents buried his remains?" Reese continued questioning her while Old Master Zhao couldn’t help feeling agonized by the thought of his daughter being disrespected by her husband.
Adrienne looked at him in distraught. It hadn’t dawned on her that Camilla must have seen her deceased older brother as a threat to Cayden’s future. She finally realized how vicious her father really was when Reese pointed this out.
"There’s an unnamed tomb my mother used to visit every year during winter. I have only seen it once and am unsure whether his remains were there. Uncle Mo knows the place and could give you the location."
