Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 406: A Carefully Laid Trap (2)
"I’m glad you found someone who makes you happy," Lennox said sincerely. "And I’m sure Myrtle appreciates having you around too."
"I know," Gavin admitted, "if only her stepbrother weren’t in the picture. As long as Myrtle bears the Han family name, there will always be complications and potential conflicts."
Gavin sighed, his expression turning slightly troubled. He had to constantly assure Myrtle that Alistair wouldn’t be able to hurt him or Lennox, and they were prepared for what was to come.
"But we’re determined to work through it together and find a way to make it all work."
"Why? Is Alistair forcing Myrtle into something she doesn’t like? I thought she had already distanced herself from the Han family."
Lennox hadn’t heard any news about Alistair Han lately, but he knew the man hadn’t completely stopped involving himself in illegal activities. If Alistair continued doing this, Lennox did not doubt that he’d get into more serious trouble soon.
"Nothing like that, but I fear Myrtle will get dragged into his problem if things go south for the Han family. Anyway, have you seen the report I emailed you earlier?" Gavin asked. He knew Myrtle was wary of having a relationship with him because she feared what Alistair might do to him. It also didn’t help that he was close to Lennox, whom Alistair saw as his archnemesis.
"Yes, but I don’t think we should venture on that grand project. The potential consequences are too high," Lennox replied, his voice filled with concern. The project Gavin sent him earlier was one of the things Adrienne disclosed to him.
Hearing Adrienne confess that she returned in time and had the memory of her previous life sounded insane, but as Lennox saw the events taking place on the same timeline his wife mentioned, it only reminded him that his wife’s experiences and suffering weren’t just a figment of her imagination.
Lennox couldn’t shake off the feeling that Alistair’s wrath was looming over them, ready to strike at any moment. According to Adrienne, this massive project was a carefully laid trap prepared by Alistair. Huayi took over the project and suffered a massive loss as a result. Adrienne believed that Alistair’s ultimate goal was to destroy Huayi and ruin Lennox’s reputation in the process.
"The stakes are high, but we surely earn more by taking this risk. Even Kristoff said that the project looks promising, but he’ll let us decide whether we should take it or not." Gavin commented.
Lennox shook his head. "Send someone to investigate who initiated this plan and who is involved in the construction process. I don’t know why it feels like a trap that is waiting for us to fall into. We must be cautious and gather as much information as possible before making any decisions."
Gavin fell silent for a moment, considering Lennox’s words.
"You think Alistair is involved with this?"
"I’m not sure. That’s something we need to find out." Lennox said, but he trusted Adrienne’s words, and he won’t allow Alistair to mess up their lives.
Gavin shrugged and continued eating his meal.
"It’s already hard to deal with him before, but now that you married Adrienne, it seems he’s set to destroy you to prove Adrienne she made a wrong choice." He commented then paused for a moment, "I feel like he’s waiting for something to happen before he makes a move."
"That man can’t take no for an answer." Lennox hummed, "He already has a pregnant wife waiting at home. He must have some loose screws on his head to covet someone else’s wife."
"I heard from Myrtle how Alistair treats his wife. I can’t say I pity Ayla Jiang since she was the one who forced herself into that situation, but I cannot imagine how Alistair would treat Adrienne if he were to get his hands on her."
Lennox said nothing because he already knew the answer to that. After hearing all the things Adrienne suffered from her previous life, Lennox couldn’t fathom the thought of her enduring any more pain or mistreatment.
He had witnessed the scars that still lingered in her heart and the fear that flashed in her eyes when she woke up from her nightmare. Lennox had spent countless nights comforting her, reassuring her she was safe now.
Seeing her distressed look made him feel like someone stabbed him right on his chest. He never wanted to see her like that ever again.
The idea of Alistair, with his volatile temper and selfish desires, inflicting any harm upon Adrienne was enough to make Lennox’s blood boil. He clenched his fists, the anger coursing through his veins, but he knew that his role was to protect her, to shield her from any further harm.
"Just be careful, Nox. He might be keeping a low profile these days, but that doesn’t mean he won’t strike again," Gavin warned him.
"I know; that’s why I already sent someone to keep an eye on him. Hunter is also keeping tabs on Alistair," Lennox replied, his voice filled with determination. "We won’t let him get anywhere near Adrienne again."
Gavin nodded, a knowing look in his eyes as he finished his meal. "You and Adrienne are meant to be together, Nox. You’ve both been through too much to let anyone come between you." Lennox simply smiled, his thoughts drifting to his loving wife.
He couldn’t wait to come home and hold her close, reminding her how much he loved her and would always protect her. As he got up from the table, he knew that no matter what obstacles lay ahead, he and Adrienne would face them together. They had each other, and that was all that mattered.
Lennox’s mind couldn’t shake off the feeling of impending danger as the conversation shifted to other topics. He knew Alistair was a cunning and manipulative man, capable of pulling off the most unexpected moves.
Lennox had to tread carefully and be cautious of every single step he took. He had to ensure his wife’s safety and happiness at all costs.
