Chapter 382: I Owe You My Life (2)

It wasn’t Valerie’s first time visiting Adrienne on the Zhao family estate, but seeing the grand mansion before her reminded her how wealthy Adrienne’s family was. The sprawling gardens and ornate architecture showcased the opulence that surrounded them. Valerie couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and wonder as she stepped through the front gates.

Adrienne’s mother meticulously designed and maintained the estate’s magnificent garden. The vibrant flowers and perfectly trimmed hedges created a picturesque scene that seemed straight out of a fairy tale.

Valerie didn’t have a green thumb, but she could see Rosemary Zhao’s dedication to cultivating such a breathtaking oasis. The attention to detail was evident in every corner of the garden, from the delicate arrangement of the flower beds to the strategically placed sculptures that added an artistic touch.

"Your mother has a talent for landscaping, Addie. Has she ever considered pursuing a career in gardening or design?" Valerie asked, genuinely curious. The garden was so stunning that it seemed like a waste of Rosemary’s talent to be confined to just her own backyard.

"I’m not sure, Val," Adrienne answered as she led her friend to the rear courtyard, where they could have an afternoon tea in private. She was pleased to see that Valerie’s mood was improving after Airi’s death; her arm was still in a cast, but she seemed more at ease now.

"Mom has always had a green thumb, but I think she’s been hesitant to turn it into a career. Maybe it’s time we encourage her to explore her options," Adrienne suggested, pouring tea into delicate porcelain cups once they sat under the lily tree.

"I heard Aunt Rose can walk on her own now and has gained a lot of strength in her legs through physical therapy," Valerie shared, sipping her tea. "It’s amazing how resilient she is."

"Yes." Adrienne smiled, a hint of gentleness appearing in her eyes. "I’m glad she fully recovered. I initially thought she would be burdened by what happened to my father and Camilla. However she has shown incredible strength and determination throughout her healing process. She’s happier now than I have ever seen her before."

Valerie hummed, feeling happy for her friend.

"Is Myrtle going to join us?" She asked, noticing her other friend was nowhere in sight.

Adrienne sighed. "Yes, she will. She’s just running a bit late. Myrtle has been busy with work lately, but she always manages to make time for us."

"You mean you’re keeping her busy with work, Addie?" Valerie teased, earning a laugh from Adrienne.

"Yes," she admitted, "I’m actually curious if Myrtle would consider resigning as my personal assistant. She might regret accepting this post because it has taken up much of her time and energy. But knowing Myrtle, she’s always been dedicated and loyal, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she continues to juggle her job and our friendship effortlessly."

"I’m so glad you’re at least aware of how busy I am because of you, Addie."

The two women turned their heads and saw Myrtle. Myrtle sat beside Valerie and poured herself a refreshing, cold tea. She looked exhausted but managed to give them a tired smile.

"I appreciate your understanding, Addie," she said, taking a sip of her drink. "But I also want you to know that I genuinely enjoy working with you and being your personal assistant. It’s just been a bit overwhelming lately."

"Ah, right, because the holiday is just around the corner, and we have so many tasks to complete before then," Adrienne said, nodding sympathetically. "But don’t worry, Myrtle, once we get through this busy period, we can take some time off to relax and recharge."

"I’m sure you are getting many orders at Purple Cloud these days," Valerie agreed. "It’s been a hell week for us too, since we’re also preparing for the holiday rush. But Addie, do you have any vacancies available if I decide to join Purple Cloud?"

Adrienne took a sip from her drink and glanced at Myrtle, who gave her an eager look.

"Actually, Valerie, we do have a few positions open at Purple Cloud. We’ve been expanding rapidly to keep up with the demand, so you might be able to join our team." She smiled reassuringly. "If you’re interested, I can definitely put in a good word for you with our hiring manager."

Valerie blinked. "Huh? Can’t the big boss do a direct hire? Aren’t you the big boss, Addie?"

Adrienne chuckled softly. "Well, technically, I am the big boss, but I believe in giving our hiring manager a chance to assess candidates directly. It ensures a fair and thorough evaluation process. But don’t worry; I’ll highlight your skills and qualifications when I speak to them."

"If it makes you feel better, even I must undergo such a lengthy process." Myrtle chimed in. "Do you know how many applicants I must compete with just to be Addie’s personal assistant? I’m sure the hiring manager would have overlooked my application if Lennox hadn’t given me a recommendation letter. The hiring manager must have felt pressured because Lennox Qin was supporting me. So, believe me, this process is designed to find the best fit for the role and give everyone a fair chance in Purple Cloud."

"But will Nathan agree for you to leave your family business? Don’t you think he needs you there?" Adrienne asked Valerie. She wondered if Airis’s death caused a rift between the Xia siblings.

"I haven’t talked to Nathan about it, but I’m sure he won’t mind. I also don’t want others to think I’m getting special treatment there because I’m his sister. It’s already bad enough that Airi and I were the usual topics within the company." Valerie shrugged, acknowledging Adrienne’s concern. "I understand why you’re worried, but I believe Nathan will support my decision. Besides, I think it’s important for me to establish my identity and prove myself outside the family business."

Adrienne wanted to ask Valerie more, but seeing her brother’s arrival interrupted their conversation. Hunter walked towards them with a warm smile and hugged Adrienne before giving her friends a polite greeting. He was oblivious to how red Valerie’s face had turned upon seeing him.
