Chapter 353: Shame on Me (1)

Since Adrienne confessed to him that she returned in time, Lennox had been wondering what kind of life she and his siblings had. He couldn’t help but imagine the experiences they had gone through and wondered what he was doing in Adrienne’s previous life. He had been pondering it for some time but didn’t have the courage to ask his wife for more details.

It was the weekend, and although he didn’t need to go to work, Lennox woke up before sunrise. His wife was still asleep next to him, her chest rising and falling peacefully with each breath. Lennox smiled, his hand reaching out to gently brush a strand of hair away from Adrienne’s face.

The harshness she used to have on her face was now replaced with a serene expression as if all the worries and burdens of her past life had been lifted along with the downfall of the Jiang family. The Jiang Corporation was no more, and Adrienne’s father struggled to keep everything together. With Camilla and their son facing legal action courtesy of Adrienne’s mother, things didn’t seem to be getting better for Lewis Jiang.

Lennox was glad Adrienne wasn’t allowing her past to ruin her happiness and future, though he knew that as long as Alistair was around, his wife would never truly feel safe. Adrienne hadn’t disclosed the details of her life, and Lennox didn’t want to make her uncomfortable by questioning her about it.

But it didn’t mean he wasn’t curious. Lennox knew there was nothing he could do to change his wife’s past, but he wanted to ensure no single strand of her hair would be touched by harm in the present or future.

As Lennox got out of bed, he slipped on his robe and walked over to the window. The sky was just starting to turn pink, and he could hear the birds outside chirping. He took a deep breath of the fresh morning air, feeling the coolness fill his lungs.

His thoughts returned to Adrienne, and he couldn’t help but wonder how she managed to survive in such a dangerous world. He had heard stories about the Jiangs and their evil ways, but he never really knew the extent of it until he met Adrienne. And now, knowing that she had gone back in time to change the course of her life, Lennox couldn’t imagine the strength and courage it took for her to do what she did.

He turned around to take another look at Adrienne, who was still sound asleep. He walked over to her side of the bed and leaned down to kiss her forehead. She stirred slightly but didn’t wake up.

Lennox couldn’t resist the urge to run his fingers through her hair, marveling at how soft and silky it felt. He watched as she slept, taking in her peaceful expression. He wished he could take away all the pain and trauma she had experienced, but he knew he couldn’t change the past.

Suddenly, Adrienne’s eyes fluttered open, and Lennox quickly pulled his hand away.

"Good morning," he said with a smile.

"Good morning," Adrienne replied, sitting up in bed. "What time is it?"

"Early. I just woke up."

Adrienne yawned and sat up while Lennox joined her on the bed.

As they sat there, Lennox couldn’t help but feel grateful for the life they had built together. It was far from perfect, but they had each other, and that was all that mattered.

"Is everything okay?" Adrienne asked, noticing the serious expression on Lennox’s face.

Lennox hesitated before speaking, but he knew he couldn’t keep his thoughts to himself forever.

"I was just thinking about your past. I can’t imagine what it was like for you, and I’m sorry I haven’t asked before, but I just wanted to know...what was it like?"

Adrienne looked down at her hands, her expression growing somber.

"It was difficult. " She admitted, "Although it’s true that my mother and I suffered because of my father and Camilla, my life with Alistair was my own doing. It was my mistake that brought me to suffer even more."

Lennox remained silent, seeing how Adrienne was still bothered by her previous marriage to Alistair Han.

She shut her eyes and sighed. "I should have known better. I deluded myself by thinking he’d save and help my mother, but that wasn’t the case. In the end, I failed to protect my mother and lost Myrtle and Dylan as well. The shame is on me."

"That isn’t the case now, Addie." Lennox reminded his wife. "You managed to change the course of the events and save your mom and Myrtle. You and Hunter also reunited. If anything, you learned from your past and decided to use it to your advantage."

"Yes, you’re right," Adrienne said, a small smile forming on her lips. "I’m grateful for the second chance I was given and for you, Lennox. Meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to me."

Lennox leaned in to kiss her, the passion between them growing stronger with each passing moment.

As they pulled away from each other, Adrienne looked into Lennox’s eyes and said, "I don’t know what the future holds, but I decided not to allow my past to affect my life further. I’m aware that I cannot stop everything from taking place, but I hope I’ll be able to see my loved ones live their lives to the fullest."

Lennox smiled, placing a hand on her cheek. "I’ll always be here for you, Addie, no matter what. You don’t have to face anything alone."

"I know," Adrienne replied, leaning in to kiss Lennox on the lips. "And I’m grateful for that."

She paused and gave her husband a good look.

"Have you made a decision about your grandfather’s request?" She asked. "Did he ask anything about your siblings?"

Lennox’s expression hardened before he nodded in response. It seemed that he had no other choice but to return to Qin Industries to get some clues or evidence that led to his accident and his father’s death three years ago.

"He asked how they were faring and if they were interested in joining the Qin family. I told him, I’m not letting those children suffer more than they already had." He sighed and ran a hand on his face. "Grandpa seemed convinced, but I cannot say the same to my two uncles. Even Jacob was curious about my brothers and sisters."

Adrienne’s heart sank. She knew firsthand how dangerous and manipulative family members could be, and she didn’t want Lennox or his siblings to suffer because of them.

"Len, please be careful," she said, gripping his hand tightly. "Your family can be just as dangerous as mine. I don’t want you to get hurt or put your siblings in danger."

Lennox nodded solemnly, understanding the weight of her words. "I know, Addie. That’s why I need to be cautious and make sure I have all the evidence I need to protect myself and my siblings."

Adrienne placed a hand on Lennox’s shoulder and said, "We’ll figure it out together. We’ll ensure your siblings are safe and your family won’t hurt them."

He leaned into her touch, grateful for her support. "Thank you, Addie. I don’t know what I’d do without you."

Adrienne smiled. "You’ll never have to find out. I’ll always be here for you, no matter what."

Lennox then fell silent, his earliest thoughts returning to him.

"Addie, if we follow the timeline of your past life, do you know anything about me and the Qin family?"

Adrienne’s expression turned serious as she thought back to her past life.

"I’m afraid I don’t know much," she admitted. "I remember hearing rumors about the Qin family, but I never had direct contact with them. My focus was always on surviving and protecting my mother. There were only rumors going on about you and Gavin. Even Alistair was having a hard time infiltrating Huayi to gather confidential files from you."

She paused when a particular memory flashed through her mind.

"The Qin family was working on a new technology to revolutionize the car industry. Alistair managed to bribe someone from the inside to get some files, and he paid a hefty amount for it. It was where the trouble in the Qin family started. Your grandfather suffered a stroke, and Jacob kept losing money and deals as well. I remember Alistair bragging about it. He said he didn’t need Huayi if he could have Qin Industries in the palm of his hand."

Lennox hardened his jaws. His father started the project Adrienne was referring to. It was one of the reasons why Lennox returned from overseas to work with his father. Adrienne knowing such information without being directly involved with him meant there was some truth in her words. His mind was racing with so many possibilities and potential dangers.

"So it’s possible that my accident and my father’s death might have been related to this technology?"

Adrienne nodded. "It’s definitely a possibility. But we don’t have enough evidence to confirm it yet."
