Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 348: You Are the Only One (1)
Adrienne raised a slender brow. Jacob must have been out of his mind if he was trying to hit her in front of his wife. Had Lennox treated her in the same manner, she would have immediately abandoned him and not looked back. Adrienne valued loyalty and respect above all else in a relationship. She couldn’t fathom how Jacob could be so brazen and disrespectful towards his wife.
"Nox didn’t waste his time and put a ring on your finger. I heard Alistair Han was actively pursuing you before, too." Jacob continued.
Adrienne chuckled, shaking her head. "Lennox knows better than to let anyone else even think about pursuing me. He’s always made it clear that I’m his one and only."
"You hear what she said, Audrey?" Jacob glanced at his wife. "I think she’s Lennox’s first love. He already forgot you."
Audrey frowned and said nothing. Instead, she sat and placed her young son on her lap while Jacob remained standing.
Adrienne could see there was no love between them. Their body language and Audrey’s silence spoke volumes. It seemed that tension filled the air whenever they were together, and their two-year-old son was the only one keeping them together. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
"Sit down, Jake," Henry warned his son with a stern voice. "You are making Adrienne uncomfortable with your aggressive stance."
Jacob hesitated for a moment before reluctantly taking a seat next to Audrey. The room fell into an uneasy silence as everyone avoided eye contact, each lost in their own thoughts.
Alyssa and her older brothers didn’t bother Adrienne with questions anymore as they pondered what kind of conversation their father was having with their nephew. Since his accident and his father’s death, Lennox hadn’t been in contact with the Qin family and chose to stay in Abigail Li’s care.
They thought, with his severe injuries, Lennox wouldn’t be able to fully recover. However, besides the scars they had seen on his neck and hand, Lennox seemed to be doing remarkably well. He had regained his strength and was able to move around with ease, surprising everyone.
"How did you and Lennox meet anyway? I don’t think Lennox was someone who would rush into marriage without knowing the woman he’s marrying." Jacob asked Adrienne, breaking the silence within the sitting room.
Everyone looked at Adrienne with curiosity. Adrienne wasn’t sure how much the Qin family knew about her and Lennox, but it wouldn’t be pointless to lie before them.
"I met him when my mother was confined to the same hospital as him. Lennox and I were at the lowest point of our lives when our paths crossed. Honestly, I didn’t like him at first. Lennox seemed arrogant and distant, but as we spent more time together, I realized he had a kind heart and was compassionate. We grew closer, supporting each other through difficult times, and eventually became good friends. Our relationship may seem rushed to outsiders, but sometimes life throws unexpected circumstances that lead to the most meaningful connections."
Even before Jacob and the others questioned her further, Lennox arrived with his grandfather. It saved Adrienne from being questioned about why she and Lennox decided to take in his half-siblings and support them.
Lennox looked uneasy, but his expression softened as soon as he saw his wife. He rushed to Adrienne’s side and kissed her temple as he sat beside her.
His grandfather cleared his throat, taking everyone’s attention. Lennox’s uncles and aunts sat straight and waited apprehensively for what the old man would say.
"I ask Nox to join our company again as one of its directors. I expect that you will cooperate with him." The Qin patriarch announced, "He’ll be responsible for a few projects Richard failed to complete prior to his death."
The three siblings looked at each other before Alyssa said, "But Father, Nox is already busy with Huayi, right? Also, he and Adrienne had just recently married. Nox would barely have time to spend with his family if he returned to the company at this time."
The old man’s expression darkened, but instead of answering his only daughter’s question, he turned to his firstborn to question Henry.
"Do you think the same way, Henry? Should Nox come back to the company despite his other commitments?"
The tension in the room grew as Henry hesitated before responding. He needed to be careful with his words and give his father a wise answer. Henry thought being the firstborn among the five children of the Qin family could give him the advantage to gain their father’s acknowledgment in the past, but it was clear that Richard, the fourth child, was the smartest among them.
"Father, while Nox’s presence would undoubtedly benefit the company, it’s important to consider his current responsibilities and priorities. Perhaps we could explore alternative solutions that allow him to contribute without sacrificing his personal life." He answered, holding his breath as they waited for their father’s response.
"And you, Adrienne? What’s your opinion on this matter?" The old patriarch questioned Adrienne this time.
Adrienne felt as though her husband’s family was trying to test her. But she knew Lennox had his reasons for keeping his distance from the family business, and she respected that. She also knew he wouldn’t make any hasty decisions without considering their future together.
She took a deep breath and gathered her thoughts before answering. "I think it’s important to prioritize one’s personal life, especially since Lennox and I just recently got married. However, I understand the importance of family and business. If Lennox decides to take on this role, we will work together to find a balance and make it work for everyone involved."
The old man nodded, seemingly satisfied with Adrienne’s answer. "Very well. Henry, you can explore those alternatives, and Nox can make his decision later. For now, let us enjoy each other’s company."
The tension in the room dissipated as the conversation turned to lighter topics. But Adrienne couldn’t get rid of the impression that the Qin family was watching her. She knew that being married to Lennox meant being part of the Qin dynasty, but she also knew she had her identity outside their family name. She would support her husband, but she would never compromise her own values and beliefs.
As time went on, Adrienne observed the dynamics within the family. She saw the love and respect between Henry and his wife, the strained relationship between Jacob and Audrey, and the complicated relationship between Lennox and his grandfather. She couldn’t help but wonder what kind of family she and Lennox were building together. But one thing was sure for Adrienne: she and Lennox would find a way to make their marriage work.
