Chapter 290: Thankfully, I Didn’t Miss You in This Lifetime (1)

Lennox frowned. This confession was hard for anyone to believe, but as he looked at his wife, Lennox knew she was serious. He could see the pain and distress in her eyes as she spoke of it. However, how could someone experience life and death only to turn back time to experience life all over again?

"Addie, you don’t have to tell me this." He told her.

Adrienne shook her head. "But I have to, Len. Don’t you believe me?"

"No, I believe you," Lennox replied. "I just think that if what you want to say makes you feel pain, you don’t have to say it. I don’t have to know. I don’t care what happened in the past as long as you are the one who is by my side now. You will always be my wife."

His tone was serious, and his expression was cold and unwavering, but a trace of uneasiness flashed in his eyes for a moment. His words sounded warm and reassuring to Adrienne.

"Thanks, Len, but I want to be honest with you. I need to tell you this for my peace of mind." Adrienne insisted. I’ve been keeping this a secret from everyone, and I know you must have questions—questions only I could answer."

Lennox was taken aback and chose to remain silent, knowing Adrienne was right.

Adrienne paused and gauged his reaction before she continued, "The me you see now is different from the 21-year-old Adrienne you should see now. However, things remained the same. My mother got involved in a car accident, and Camilla became my stepmother. On the surface, she treats me kindly, but behind everyone’s back, she continues to scheme to harm me and my mother. Even the servants at home didn’t treat me well because of her. It was much later when I realized that it was her directive for them to bully me until I foolishly left the Jiang estate, trying to avoid conflict with them."

"I left home as soon as I turned eighteen, and Myrtle had become my only source of support and comfort. She was my best friend and confidante, always there for me during dark times. However, despite leaving home, Camilla continued to harass me without my father’s knowledge. Around that time, she and Cayden bribed a nurse to drug my mother, the same nurse you and I chased away three years ago. I didn’t know you back then, and I was forced to go to ’Elysian’ to sell myself to some rich businessman."

Lennox visibly went rigid, his eyes narrowing in disbelief. He knew what kind of place Elysian was and what transpired in that place. While many men deemed it a place to escape reality, indulging in carnal desire, Elysian was hell for women. He couldn’t imagine the despair Adrienne felt when she chose to step on that filthy place.

Adrienne smiled bitterly, seeing her husband’s reaction. She had a gist of what Lennox was thinking at that moment.

"I was foolish and inexperienced in many ways, Len. I didn’t know the seriousness of what I was about to do until I stepped into that place. The manager of that establishment almost violated me by forcing me to give him a head, but I refused. I was so scared and desperate; it wasn’t until Alistair Han stepped in and saved me from that situation."

"Alistair Han?" Lennox felt there was a history between his wife and Alistair, but neither he nor Gavin could find a deeper connection, no matter how often they investigated them.

Adrienne nodded, holding Lennox’s hand. His hand tightened around hers, a mix of concern and curiosity evident in his eyes.

"I never told you about Alistair before because I didn’t want to bring up those painful memories," she admitted softly. "In my previous life, he was my savior, and I fell in love with him. He became someone I deeply admired from afar. I knew my cousin Ayla was in love with him, too, and was aware of the difference in our status. However, before my twenty-first birthday, my mom contracted another complication, and I was forced to find the money to pay her medical bills. Desperate and with no other options, I turned to Alistair for help. He agreed to lend me the money, but on one condition: I should marry him to appease his family’s wish for him to marry. It was a difficult decision, but I had no choice but to accept it.

Adrienne saw that it was a lot for Lennox to take in and hoped he’d keep his earlier words. Lennox was stunned by her confession; his eyes flashed a glint of disbelief.

"I married Alistair Han despite Myrtle’s warning that he would not be trusted. As time passed, I discovered that Alistair’s true intentions were far from honorable. He became controlling and manipulative, making my life a living nightmare."

Lennox’s eyes flashed with anger, but he refused to say anything, willing to hear everything.

"The first two years of marriage with him were bliss. I had a roof over my head, no worries about where to get my next meal, and I didn’t need to beg anyone or work restlessly to get the money to pay Mom’s hospital bills. I thought no one would dare harm or bully me, but I was wrong. I was wrong, Len."

Adrienne shut her eyes as she felt her tears starting to cloud her sight. It was hard for her to talk about her grievances from her past life with anyone. She knew it was hard to believe, but that didn’t mean none had ever happened.

"Marrying him was my greatest mistake, Lennox. The years I was with him were the darkest days of my life. Two years after marriage, the real nightmare started to haunt me. Elise and Sierra schemed against me, but in the end, Myrtle was harmed because she tried to save me. Myrtle was injected with drugs that made her an addict. I ruined Myrtle’s life and future, Len, and I couldn’t forgive myself."
