Chapter 257: I Refuse This Marriage Arrangement (1)

"Mom told you that?" Adrienne asked her husband in surprise. She would have never thought her mother would harbor such thoughts.

To seek revenge? It sounded impossible for her mother to do such a thing.

"That’s what she told me, Addie." Lennox watched as he sat on their bed, waiting for his wife to finish her work. He was already ready for bed, and surprisingly, their stay at the Zhao estate was

After Adrienne returned from Chiangshi University, she received a call from Sunny from Purple Cloud saying that she would need to review some documents before the launch of their newest shoe collection.

"She must be feeling guilty for what happened." Adrienne replied. She could imagine how painful it was for her mother to know that she was the cause of her suffering before.

"I agree with you." Lennox replied, "She wouldn’t have said those words if she wasn’t blaming herself."

Adrienne nodded in agreement, understanding the weight of guilt that her mother must be carrying. She knew that her mother’s remorse was genuine and that she was determined to make amends for her past mistakes. However, how could she allow her mother to put herself in danger?

The quest for revenge was for her to take, not her mother and Hunter. Initially, Adrienne was prepared to use everything at stake to avenge, but she realized now that she had enough reasons to end the Jiang family in order to protect her loved ones.

"Old Master Jiang has requested my presence at their family estate," she told Lennox, who immediately went frigid on his seat upon hearing her words.

He knew the implications of this invitation. The Jiang family was determined to break them apart and for his wife to marry Alistair Han. Lennox’s eyes flashed with murderous intent. The thought of his wife being forcibly taken away from him filled him with so much rage he hadn’t felt before.

"I won’t allow them to take you away from me, Addie," he said after a long silence between them.

It would have been a different matter if Adrienne had left him willingly for another man, but he knew Alistair Han wasn’t qualified to have her hand in marriage. Based on what Lennox knew about that man, he was certain Alistair wouldn’t treat Adrienne with the love and respect she deserved.

Adrienne rose from her seat and walked towards him until she was standing between his legs. Lennox lifted his head and met her gaze as Adrienne cupped the side of his face.

"No one’s going to take me away from you. Not the Jiang family, not Alistair Han, nor the gods above have the ability to do so. I will always be with you."

Lennox let out a satisfied smile this time and held the hand that was holding his face.

"There’s no one for me but you, Addie. Even if I leave me at will, even if I perish in this world, my heart belongs to you." He promised.

Adrienne smiled bitterly. The love Lennox had shown her was different from the one she’d received from Alistair in her past life. She thought that Alistair’s overprotectiveness and obsession were because of his intense love for her, but she was wrong.

If Alistair truly loved her, he wouldn’t have made her life miserable. He should have respected her and cherished her the way Lennox was treating her. Adrienne realized that Lennox’s promise to give her freedom and prioritize her happiness was a stark contrast to the suffocating relationship she had endured with Alistair. She finally understood that true love meant allowing someone to be their authentic self, rather than controlling and manipulating them.

"Wait for my return, Len." She assured him, "It didn’t matter what my grandfather said; he wouldn’t be able to break us apart. They also have a debt they need to settle with me."

This time, Adrienne’s eyes flashed dangerously. Her grandparents weren’t innocent anyway. They were aware of the plan to have her defiled by Ares Gu three years ago, and Adrienne hadn’t forgotten about it at all.

"You should bring Irina and the rest with you." Lennox suggested. He feared that the Jiang family would forcibly keep her at the Jiang estate against her will until she agreed to marry Alistair Han. He knew well that they would play dirty tricks to get what they wanted.

"Uncle Reese insisted on coming with me." Adrienne smiled at him. "He knew what the Jiang family was up to. There was no way he would agree to the marriage arrangement the Jiang family set for me." 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Lennox nodded. He trusted Uncle Reese and knew that he would do everything in his power to protect Adrienne. Adrienne wasn’t just the heir of the Jiang family; she was also the treasure of the Zhao family. The Zhao family wouldn’t sit idly, knowing Adrienne was being bullied by the Jiang family.

"I’ll make sure to keep in touch with you and the rest," Adrienne said to Lennox. "I’ll turn down the marriage arrangement and end this once and for all."

Lennox couldn’t help but feel proud of his wife. She was strong, determined, and willing to do whatever it took to protect their family. His heart swelled with admiration for her. He was proud to be her husband.

He wrapped his arms around her and pressed his face against her belly. Adrienne gasped and awkwardly placed her hand on his shoulder. He was the more affectionate of the two, and she knew that his display of affection was his way of reassuring her.

"I’ll be waiting for you, Addie," he said, holding her tightly. "I expect to hear good news from you."

Lennox knew that Adrienne was capable of accomplishing anything she set her mind to. This was one of the things he liked about her. He knew she would keep her promise to him. There was no way Adrienne would choose Alistair Han over him, and even if Alistair managed to take Adrienne away from him, he swore to take her back.
