Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 233: Meeting the In-Laws (1)
When Lennox received a call from his wife that her Uncle Reese had requested a meeting between them, he knew he should come prepared. He knew Reese Zhao was overprotective of his niece and would allow anyone to have her hand in marriage without going through him.
Lennox expected that he was already on Reese Zhao’s bad side because he married Adrienne without the older man’s permission, but he was determined to make amends and gain Reese’s approval. He understood the importance of family and wanted to show Reese that he was committed to taking care of Adrienne and making her happy. He planned to approach the meeting with respect, honesty, and a genuine desire to build a positive relationship with his wife’s uncle.
The meeting date was set for Saturday, and he was invited to dinner with his mother. As he prepared for the meeting, he couldn’t help but feel a mix of nervousness and excitement. He knew his mother’s support would be crucial in gaining Reese’s approval, and he hoped that her presence would help ease any tension during the dinner. With a deep breath, he reminded himself to stay true to his intentions and show Reese that he was truly dedicated to making things right.
"You are worrying too much, Nox," Gavin commented because he couldn’t tolerate seeing Lennox walk back and forth inside his office. If Lennox wanted to show his nervousness over his impending meeting with the Zhao family, why did he choose to come to his office? 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Gavin leaned back in his chair, observing Lennox with a knowing smile. "You’ve got this, Lennox. Just be yourself and let Reese see the genuine effort you’re putting in," he reassured him. "Besides, having her support will only strengthen your position with the Zhao family."
"It’s easy for you to say that, Gav, because you aren’t in my shoes. This is my in-laws we’re talking about, and I’ve already ruined their first impression of me. I have no doubt Reese Zhao was already cursing me to death for tricking his niece into marriage when he had no idea it was Addie’s idea in the first place." Lennox grumbled before running his fingers through his dark hair.
Gavin shrugged in his seat. Do you really want to hear what’s on my mind?"
Lennox cast his best friend a seething glare. He always knew Gavin didn’t mince his words and didn’t mind saying what was on his mind on Lennox’s face. It was one of the reasons he appreciated Gavin. Gavin Si wasn’t just a friend to Lennox. He was like a brother to him, someone who had always been there for him through thick and thin.
When he saw Gavin’s face when he woke up after the accident, Lennox felt ashamed and regretted putting Gavin in a tight position. Lennox knew Gavin had been worried sick about him and likely blamed himself for the accident. The guilt weighed heavily on Lennox’s conscience, knowing he had caused his best friend so much distress.
"Shoot," Lennox answered; his curiosity about Gavin’s opinion got the best of him.
"You can’t really blame him, Nox. Even if he knew about your deal with Adrienne, she is still a young woman in his eyes. Heck, I have no doubt she’ll be forever ’Little Addie’ to him. You married his niece and fucked her behind his back. That’s bound to leave a sour taste in anyone’s mouth, especially a protective uncle like Reese Zhao. But hey, love makes people do crazy things, right? And who knows, maybe one day he’ll come to see that you truly care for Addie." He offered a hopeful smile, trying to ease Lennox’s guilt.
However, when Gavin put it that way, it made it sound like he was a villain who tricked the heroine and took her away. Of course, Lennox never regretted his decision to marry Adrienne. Heck, he never felt content and accomplished until he put that wedding ring on her finger.
Lennox’s anger quickly dissipated as he realized Gavin was only trying to reassure him. Deep down, he knew that his love for Addie was genuine and that their marriage was the best thing that ever happened to him. Despite the guilt, Lennox couldn’t help but hope that one day, Reese Zhao would understand and see the happiness they shared.
He took a seat and clasped his hands together. "What should I do then? I don’t want to have a conflict with the Zhao family."
"Are you really asking me that question, Nox?" Gavin arched a brow at his best friend. "I suppose you already knew this would happen when you married her."
"Knowing and facing it are two different matters, Gav." Lennox sighed, his gaze fixed on the floor. "I know it’s my fault for marrying Addie as soon as I got the chance, but I cannot be apart from her for too long, Gav. You’ve seen how relentlessly Alistair Han tried to force her into marriage. I won’t give him a chance to snatch her away from me."
Gavin nodded understandingly, his expression softening. "I can’t deny that Alistair Han is a persistent threat, but rushing into marriage might have its own consequences, Nox. Have you considered the potential challenges that lie ahead?" Lennox’s eyes flickered with a mix of determination and worry. "I have, Gav. But I’d rather face those challenges with Addie by my side than live in constant fear of losing her. We’ll figure it out together, no matter what. Who knows what other tricks Alistair Han has to force Addie to marry him in the future?"
"So we’re back on the problem at hand, then. Just show your sincerity towards Reese Zhao, and don’t leave Adrienne’s side unless you want a confrontation between you and him. I’m sure he’ll come around someday and accept you as Adrienne’s husband. I’ll be constantly watching my back, though." Gavin suggested. It was rare for him to see his arrogant best friend and business partner show nervousness like this.
Lennox nodded in agreement, finding his friend’s words reassuring. He knew he had to be patient and understanding, even if it meant enduring Reese Zhao’s disapproval for a while longer. He didn’t want to cause more tension between him and the Zhao family and was determined to make amends.
