Chapter 179: Familial Ties (1)

Waylen Jiang paced back and forth inside his study, waiting impatiently for the call to confirm that his niece would never bother him again. It was already late at night, and he was still restless.

The man he called to do the job told him to wait a week, but he hadn’t heard from him since then. Was it really hard to get rid of Adrienne? Waylen wondered. He needed to ensure Adrienne wouldn’t threaten him and Ayla’s future.

His daughter had recently signed as a new talent at Starmedia, so how could he allow his niece to block Ayla’s career? He won’t allow a little girl like Adrienne to ruin his family.

Waylen was preoccupied with these thoughts when, suddenly, his phone rang, breaking the silence in his study. He rushed to answer his phone, excitement written on his face. He was expecting that those men would do the job. He was willing to pay an exorbitant amount so long as they could end Adrienne’s life. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮

"It’s me," Waylen answered. "How is it?"

The man on the other line sighed and said in a disappointing tone, "We’ve known each other for years, Waylen, but I would have never thought I would suffer a major loss because of you."

"What?!" Waylen was at a loss. He couldn’t understand what the other man was saying. Did that mean they weren’t able to get rid of his niece?

"No one is willing to take the job, Waylen. Someone beat to death the people I sent to follow Adrienne Jiang. Waylen, I will only warn you once. Don’t provoke Miss Jiang further. If you dare to put a reward on her head again, someone will put ten times the amount you offer, and I’m telling you, others would willingly take that offer rather than offend the person backing Miss Jiang."

The call ended without Waylen uttering a single response. He sat on his seat wordlessly; his mind went blank as the words had yet to sink in. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard. The warning had struck a chord of fear within him, making him realize the dangerous game he had been playing. Waylen’s hands trembled as he contemplated the consequences of his actions, realizing that he had underestimated the power and influence of his niece.

He couldn’t believe that he had failed. He had never failed before, especially when it came to taking care of his business and family. But now he was faced with a tough opponent. One that he couldn’t just buy off or intimidate.

Waylen Jiang knew that he had to come up with a new plan. He couldn’t just let his niece ruin his daughter’s future and his family’s reputation. He thought long and hard, trying to figure out what he could do to get rid of Adrienne Jiang, but nothing came to mind.

Waylen’s heart raced as he thought about the warning he had just received. What had he done? He had unknowingly stepped into a world he knew nothing about. He had underestimated his niece, thinking she was just a little girl. But now he realized he was dealing with a powerful force that he couldn’t even comprehend.

As he mulled over the problem, his phone rang again. His eyes widened when the screen flashed his niece’s name. Waylen knew he could not ignore Adrienne and pressed the answer button without saying anything.

He then heard Adrienne’s amused laugh from the other line. A laugh sent chills down his spine as if she knew something he didn’t. Waylen’s curiosity grew, wondering what secrets Adrienne held and what kind of power she possessed. The sound of her laughter made him realize that he had only scratched the surface of her true capabilities, and he couldn’t help but feel trepidation for what lay ahead.

"Uncle must be worried I would disclose his secret to the world. For you to hire those men to threaten my life, I have to applaud you for your courage, Uncle." Adrienne said it with sarcasm. "However, you should know how this would end if you kept breaking your word."

Waylen felt a lump form in his throat. He remained silent, unsure of what to say next. He knew his niece could easily take him down if she wanted to.

Adrienne continued, "I heard Ayla is now a talent at Starmedia. It’s critical for her to build her name and reputation, Uncle. Are you sure you are willing to destroy her chances by offending me?

Cold shivers ran down Waylen’s spine as he listened to his niece’s words. Adrienne hit his weaknesses brutally and knew how to destroy him and his family completely.

"Uncle, do you know that if I expose your secret to the public, Ayla’s future will be ruined by you? She might hate me, but there’s no doubt she would blame you as well. Ayla is your firstborn. You should think twice before taking action against me."

Waylen broke into a cold sweat. What Adrienne said would be his greatest nightmare. Although he regretted betraying Maryam, he loved his daughter the most. Ayla was like a pearl, which he treasured deeply. If Ayla learned to hate him, he would be devastated.

"Why are you doing this, Addie?" He said it after a long silence. "What did I do to you for you to treat my family like this?"

Adrienne didn’t answer immediately. Her silence felt like calmness before a storm to Waylen.

"Uncle must be forgetting that what you have right now is because my mother made it possible. My mother treated you well, but you allowed my father and your parents to bully her to no end. You are asking why I’m treating you like this, but have you ever wondered how your family treats me and my mother?" Adrienne laughed coldly.

"I bet Uncle is also aware that it was Aunt Maryam and Ayla’s idea to get me defiled by Young Master Gu."

Waylen sucked in a deep breath. So it turned out that Adrienne was steps ahead of them all this time. She was even aware that his wife and daughter were involved in the recent scheme against her.

"Adrienne... You..."

So, Uncle, do you still think your family is innocent?" Adrienne said it with a threatening tone. "Your entire family is black-hearted. I’m your niece, but it seems no familial affection or ties are shared between us."
