Chapter 126: Under the Guise of Protection (2)

It had been two weeks. Two fucking weeks since her last visit to Jinxiu Garden and Lennox’s words continued to play in her mind even through the late nights. It was whispering to her, taunting her, reminding her of her weaknesses and vulnerability. But what was worse was his suggestion to put a person on her side to keep an eye on her under the guise of protection.

Adrienne knew Lennox was nothing like Alistair and it wasn’t his fault she was reacting like this. The memories of her previous life continued to haunt her, giving her nightmares as if trying to remind her not to forget the cost of her foolishness. However, in the end, Adrienne begrudgingly agreed and accepted Lennox’s trusted aid to be on her side.

Adrienne was at home when Irina arrived at the Jiang estate. She was reading another book about finance when Mother Wang came to her to announce the other woman’s arrival.

"Let her in," Adrienne replied lazily, but there was a hint of suspicion in her eyes that was lost to the older woman before her.

The scorching sun that was torturing them weeks ago was gone again. The rain returned full blow and had been pouring incessantly for a week now. Some schools had temporarily suspended their classes because of this and that included Springfield Academy.

Adrienne was somewhat surprised that someone would come to see her in this gloomy weather. However, thinking that it was one of Lennox’s people, she supposed she shouldn’t be surprised at all.

A faint emotion bloomed in her heart. It wasn’t like she was being ungrateful towards Lennox, but she would rather not get involved too deeply with him. She was also starting to see that Lennox wasn’t truly the cold-hearted person as the rumors made him out to be. He was considerate and thoughtful to those he cherished and won’t spare anything to provide for them.

’’It’s no longer safe since you’ve already offended your uncles, Addie. They will surely try to find an opening to get even with you. Let me find someone to stay by your side and protect you." Lennox’s further words played in her mind.

Mother Wang returned to Adrienne’s room with Irina by her side.

"You are the person Lennox assigned to protect me?" Adrienne asked, giving Irina a good look. Although Irina was tall and slim, her face and expression were schooled, allowing no one to know what she was thinking about. She also has a pale brown hair color and dark brown eyes.

"Yes, Miss Jiang. I’m Irina. I’ll be at your service from now on." Irina gave her a polite bow.

"You don’t trust me, Irina. I can see that." Adrienne said without batting an eyelid, surprising both Mother Wang and Irina, "but that’s okay. I don’t trust you either." She added.

"Then Miss Jiang, do you not want to keep me? I cannot return to the Young Master like this." Irina was one of the best aides under Lennox and Gavin’s service. The two had secret elite guards at their disposal.

At the time of Lennox’s accident, the transition from their previous headquarters were still ongoing and Lennox only brought a couple of guards with him. Hence, everyone was left shocked when the accident took place and the guards barely managed to pull out their master from the wreckage.

However, most of the elite guards under the Qin-Si partnership had undergone rigorous trainings before they were accepted. They had been trained to protect those two for ages and for Lennox to send her to Adrienne confused Irina.

Was her Young Master Lennox displeased with her somehow? Irina couldn’t remember offending him at all. She grumbled in her heart. She thought she didn’t deserve to be punished to serve a young woman like Adrienne Jiang. She didn’t even know what his young master’s relationship with this person was.

The Adrienne Jiang in the rumors was vastly different from the one before her. A foolish woman wouldn’t dare to give her a cold, measuring gaze like this. One could mistaken Adrienne for an alluring demoness that would bring disaster to others. Irina’s impression of her was one not to be easily bullied by others, so what’s the point of her being here?

Irina, although a female and younger than her fellow elite guards, were not in the least inferior compared to them. Which was why the fact that their Master Lennox wanted her to be Miss Jiang’s personal bodyguard was somewhat difficult for her to accept. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

She met Adrienne’s gaze and couldn’t help but feel a sense of shock. What kind of gaze was this? This was not a gaze Irina would normally see on any normal person. Adrienne’s eyes were utterly cold and profound, as if she could see past their facade, straight to their soul. Under her new mistress’ cold and scrutinizing gaze, Irina felt uncomfortable. She could only swallow the words she was about to add earlier.

"Since your master had given you to me, shouldn’t you swear your loyalty to me from now onwards? How could I keep you by my side when your loyalty is to someone else? I don’t keep dogs who only know how to bite their master." Adrienne said impassively.

Irina was visibly annoyed, thinking that Lennox had truly mistreated her. There was no way she would betray her master for this woman.

When she remained silent, Adrienne resumed her reading, her eyes detached and emotionless.

"I don’t expect you to be loyal to me since you’ve been with Lennox for years. But Irina, you have to remember that while you are by my side, you’ll be prone to bribes from my relatives and the danger of being with me. Of course, I know you can betray me easily if you choose to, but know that I will make you pay for your life if that happens."

As Adrienne said these words, Irina broke into a cold sweat. She somehow knew that her new mistress wasn’t joking at all.
