Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 124: Brother-In-Law (2)
Lennox was taken aback and looked at Hunter in surprise. He thought he was the only one who noticed such things about Adrienne. His expression turned gloomy. He cannot refute what Hunter had just said. Although Adrienne was with them, Lennox sometimes felt like she wasn’t truly with them.
Adrienne was someone who was careful and cautious, so even if she didn’t say anything, her actions spoke louder. Her eyes always had a trace of melancholy, especially when speaking to Myrtle and Noah. No matter how hard she tried to hide it through her cold words or actions, her eyes would reveal the pain in her heart.
Even though he and Adrienne could be considered friends, Adrienne never spoke to him about her struggles. In fact, she vehemently refused to ask him for any help unless she could return that favor.
Hunter met his gaze this time.
"This is why I cannot just give over her hand to anyone, Lennox Qin. You are marrying my sister out of convenience, but she’s still a woman whose heart was gravely broken. I’ve just reunited with my sister. I don’t want to lose her again." He insisted. His tone was straightforward, and his expression cold and unwavering.
"I fear that Adrienne would fall in love with you, and she would be heartbroken in the end," Hunter admitted. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Lennox was taken aback for the second time. He never thought that Hunter would admit this so easily to him. However, hearing his concern towards Adrienne was heart-warming.
"You worry about that, but what if it’s the other way around?" He chuckled, but there wasn’t any hint of amusement in his tone or face.
Hunter was frozen in place and stared at Lennox as if the man had grown another head on his shoulder.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" He frowned.
Lennox gave him a weak smile.
"What I mean is, what if I’m the one who fell head over heels for Addie? You and I both know how she is keeping everyone at arm’s length. I fear that I’ll be the one helpless in the end once she insists on serving our divorce papers."
Hunter narrowed his gaze at Lennox. He wasn’t sure what to feel hearing the man’s admission.
"You like Addie? You’ve only known her for weeks."
"Does it really matter? Is there a reason why I cannot like her?" Lennox’s immediate response shook Hunter.
"I’m not saying I love her now, but I want to know her better. Any man could find her attractive, but not many would try to win her heart and understand her. I want Addie to rely on me, but I doubt something like that would happen anytime soon."
Lennox knew that Adrienne had built impenetrable walls around her and he wasn’t certain if he could thaw her cold heart. He also understood that for a person to gain a strong heart, one must lose something big in the process.
Adrienne’s real suffering was probably unimaginable for her to turn out like the person she was now. The unjust treatment of the Jiang family didn’t seem to be the only reason for this. Lennox could feel that there was a missing piece in the puzzle, and without it, he wouldn’t be able to truly understand the woman he was about to marry.
Hunter stared at him quietly, with complex emotions in his eyes. He clenched his hands into fists as he tried his best to suppress his displeasure and annoyance over Lennox’s audacity to try and win Addie’s heart. However, he could only listen to what Lennox would say for now. He couldn’t sense any ill intent from the other man and he also didn’t miss the dejected expression on Lennox’s face.
It wasn’t easy for any man to admit something like this to others. So, when Lennox made his intentions towards Adrienne vocal, Hunter felt very uncomfortable. In his eyes, Adrienne was too young to get involved with a man. However, it was also hard for him to deny Lennox when he could see the sincerity in his eyes.
"I cannot help you with that. You are on your own, Mr. Qin, if you want to win Addie’s heart. However, I would like to ask you to look after Addie once I return to the barracks. What happened last night should never happen again. While I trust Addie, I do not fully trust those around her." Hunter hadn’t forgotten yet the other reason for this meeting with Lennox Qin.
Lennox’s expression immediately changed. "What happened? Is this why Liam came with you with an injured hand?"
Hunter then relayed to him what transpired last night, telling him how Adrienne had recklessly volunteered to become Liam’s opponent to placate his frustrations and his intention to die using the accident as a cover-up. Adrienne was enraged after the race when Liam’s car crashed on the side road.
"Please don’t take it against Addie if she slapped your brother. If Liam Qin was my brother, I might have done worse instead." Hunter rubbed his aching temple. He hadn’t slept yet, and remembering what happened last night soured his mood.
"I understand. It’s Liam who made a mistake. I apologize to you and Addie on his behalf." Lennox slightly lowered his head. Not even Gavin’s reports indicated that his younger brother harbored such thoughts, forcing Adrienne to do something.
"It’s fine. But I do hope you understand how dangerous this deal Adrienne has with you is. I don’t want her to subject herself to such a dangerous situation just to save your siblings’ lives. You are also an older brother, so I hope you understand where I come from."
Lennox, who had been raising and looking after Samantha and Noah for some time now understood Hunter’s concern. For a man who was usually unmoved and indifferent to others, Lennox suddenly felt fear and panic as he heard Hunter’s words.
What if they lose Adrienne in the process? Lennox wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if something happened to Adrienne. Had he made a mistake by striking this deal with her?
