Chapter 119: The Bet Is On (1)

Liam started to feel uneasy and panicked. He was scared senseless for Adrienne. Her driving was so reckless that it was enough for anyone to fear for her life. He couldn’t understand why she would endanger her life just to beat him. Was she out of her mind?

The Adrienne Jiang on the screen had a slight smile on her face, clearly enjoying the race. Her left hand quickly steered the steering wheel and did a marvelous drift as she made another successful turn. Those watching her could only hold their breaths and grip their arms as the two racers started the third lap.

Hunter couldn’t relax in his seat while everyone cheered, eager to see who would win in this race. This was the last lap, and surely Adrienne and Liam would do everything or anything to win. He didn’t perceive his sister as someone who would easily concede without a fight.

The rain started to weaken, but it wouldn’t change the fact that the road was soaking wet. The visibility also improved, but who could guarantee Adrienne wouldn’t make a mistake in this lap?

However, despite everyone’s doubt about Adrienne’s capabilities, the one who made a fatal mistake was Liam, not her. Liam, desperate to increase the distance between him and Adrienne, had also gone full speed, despite his aching wrist. He had forgotten that they had reached the most dangerous trail of the course.

A cliff came into his view, and his eyes widened, face blanched as he realized his mistake. Liam quickly stepped on the brake, and his car wheels made a screeching sound as he stirred to the left. He barely managed to avoid flying to the bottom of the cliff, but Liam had lost control of the car, and he crashed on the side of the mountain.

Adrienne’s car passed him in a breeze, and soon, she reached the finish line alone. She stopped at the starting point and reversed the car, intending to return to the crash site. Others followed her lead and ran towards the other car to save Liam.

When they arrived, they saw that the front part of the car was ruined, but Liam managed to survive. His face was still pale from shock. He thought he was going to die earlier.

Liam was still seated behind the steering wheel when he spotted a familiar woman alighting from the black car. Her striking red leather jacket was too eye-catching not to notice. Behind her came the bright headlights of his friends’ cars. Because of this, Adrienne’s face became more menacing, her cold dark eyes peering at him with annoyance.

Liam pushed the door open and stepped out. He supported himself by propping his hands on his thighs as he heaved deep breaths. He heard footsteps coming his way, and when he looked up, Adrienne’s face came into view. The freezing coldness in her eyes startled Liam.

"You win. What is it that you want then?" He asked. Adrienne managed to complete the three laps without encountering any trouble. Liam had prided himself as a decent driver, but who would have thought he was no match against the young woman before him?

However, instead of answering his question, Adrienne slapped him instead, much to everyone’s shock.

"You insisted on racing tonight because you wanted to take your life, right? You knew how dangerous it would be for everyone, but you won’t listen to any reason! Are you mad?! Don’t bring someone with you if you want to die! Do you want everyone to be traumatized by your death?"

Those who heard Adrienne’s words gasped and covered their mouths in shock as they looked at Liam. Liam lowered his head in shame, gritting his teeth in disappointment. However, a moment later, he sighed, straightened his back, and looked at Adrienne.

"It’s my fault. I won’t do it again." He conceded, his previous arrogance gone.

Being chided like this by Adrienne reminded Liam of his deceased mother. Despite being approachable and kind to everyone, his mother had a bad temper. His mother died from cervical cancer two years ago, and since then, Liam has never been the same again. He started skipping school and got involved with the wrong people. Thankfully, he met Brother Mack and discovered the thrill and excitement racing could bring to him.

Since then, he’d been racing illegally but earned a living. He even managed to pique the curiosity of a manager from a racing team, but Liam declined his invitation as he was still grieving his mother’s death. Also, he was still in high school and would like to finish it before considering what he should do in the future.

"Liam, is this true?" Brother Mack asked. He knew Liam’s struggle for the past two years and would have never thought Liam would try to stage his death like this. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

"You know that I’m always here if you need someone to talk to. Why would you consider ending your life like this?"

"I apologize, Brother Mack. I assure you it won’t happen again."

Ah! How embarrassing! Liam thought.

"You better stick to your words. I don’t want someone dying under my watch." Brother Mack said, before turning his attention to Adrienne. "Miss, your winnings are ready. Would you like to take it?"

"Of course," Adrienne replied. She wouldn’t say no to the money she earned. "You can hand it over to my assistant." She added, pointing to her older brother, Hunter, who was relieved that she returned safely.

"Can Miss Jiang tell me now what I owe you this time?" Liam asked. He felt uneasy under Adrienne’s gaze. The bet between the racers differed from the audience’s monetary betting. The winner would usually get a favor from the losing party.

As he looked at her, the image of Lennox Qin crossed his mind. Adrienne’s piercing cold gaze was almost identical to his older half-brother. Liam had only met Lennox several times, but his impression of him remained the same.
