"Miss Jiang, I would have never pegged you for being talented in extorting people. If only my people were as sensible as you, my work would be so much easier." Uncle Shark commented once they left the building.
Hunter glanced at the mirror, checking Adrienne’s expression. They were going to Lawyer Zhang’s place to join them for a celebration.
"Getting what you want from someone is easy if you know their weakness. You have their lives in your hands, and they would be squirming like worms, trying to get away from you."
Uncle Shark chuckled. "Then that’s another source of income, Miss Jiang. Are you planning to seek more?"
"Of course." The young lady shut her eyes with a satisfied smile. "The monetary gain alone isn’t enough."
As Adrienne said this, the devilish smile made Hunter wonder just how much the Jiang family had previously harmed her. However, he must admit that her ways had forced Waylen to concede. The Jiang family valued their reputation, which was hypocritical, considering their maliciousness.
Lawyer Zhang’s place was buzzing with people when they arrived. Adrienne didn’t waste time and greeted Uncle Zhang. It was the third month of his grandson’s birth, and it had been five years since his son got married, and they had waited a long time to conceive.
"Addie, I’m glad you’re here! I wasn’t expecting you to accept this old man’s invitation." Uncle Zhang came and greeted them.
Adrienne gave her gift to the man standing next to Uncle Zhang. She had met him previously and knew he was following in his father’s footsteps.The man, Rowan Zhang, would one day surpass Uncle Zhang. She hoped that she could lure him to her side.
"How can I decline your invitation, Uncle? You haven’t been in town long, so I wouldn’t dare to miss this event." She then smiled at Rowan Zhang. A prominent and capable lawyer like him would surely be useful to her in the future.
Because Uncle Zhang had chosen to take leave, he could avoid the calamity that had yet to happen. It wasn’t like Adrienne didn’t consider what could happen if she changed someone’s destiny. She wondered if the heavenly deities would punish her for this.
Hunter then realized this was why Adrienne had changed her clothes earlier. It wasn’t to intimidate Waylen Jiang and Chantal Yao, but to pay respects tonight. The usual coldness on her face had vanished and was replaced with a warm and gentle smile as if she was giving everyone a chance to see her previous self. It would have been better if Adrienne remained like this. However, if she really did, she would be vulnerable to schemes and tricks of their enemies.
"Would you like to hold our Xiao Lu?" A woman came with a small bundle in her arms. She had a wide smile on her face as she regarded Adrienne. She was Uncle Zhang’s daughter-in-law.
Adrienne’s smile faltered. She couldn’t decline the woman before her as she placed the small baby in her arms. Her back was ramrod, and she looked at the sleeping baby in her arms. This was the second time she had held a child as small as this. Obviously, the first one was Dylan.
However, holding a baby was making her uncomfortable. Perhaps it was because of the trauma that she could never have a child that made her wary of holding one. She was afraid that she would hurt them, so when Dylan was young, she also had this fear in her heart.
"Isn’t he beautiful?" The young mother beamed with joy as she looked at her son.
Adrienne eyed her for a moment and nodded. This is what a mother would feel like seeing and holding her own child. She then lowered her gaze. There was no need to feel envious of others, she reminded herself. She should be happy instead.
"Indeed," She finally smiled. "Little one, your young aunt hopes you’ll have a bright and prosperous future."
In this life, although she would marry Lennox Qin, there wouldn’t be any chance for her to have a child of her own. Just like her mother, the issue of her infertility had been a big struggle in her life. Thankfully, since her marriage with Lennox was only for two years, she does not need to worry about in-laws hoping for her to produce an heir.
Despite the joyous occasion, Adrienne’s mood remained low. Hunter remained by her side while Uncle Shark took the chance to drink alcohol. He looked displeased at the loan shark, thinking he might cause embarrassment to Adrienne.
"Should we leave now? You’ve only just recovered, Addie." Hunter reminded her. "There’s no need to stay up late tonight."
Since her last visit to Jinxiu Garden, Adrienne’s complexion and health have slowly recovered. Hunter was constantly worried she would fall sick again. Now that they were reunited, he intended to look after her welfare.
Adrienne’s eyes swept around the room. No one had troubled her tonight, but she wasn’t bothered by it. Because of the rumors, her reputation wasn’t good in public, causing other people to be wary of her.
"Alright, let’s do that."
Since today’s mission was a success, Adrienne didn’t need to stay too long. She swirled the drink in her cup and fell into deep thought. Now that she had dealt with Ayla’s family, it was time for her to settle the scores with her second uncle and his family. They were not innocent, and while impending doom was about to hit them, would she be satisfied with that alone?
After her death, Sierra and her family took a massive chunk of Rosemary Zhao’s wealth. Her family continued to prosper after this. Amongst the three Jiang brothers, Alfred Jiang had gained the most from Adrienne’s tragic loss.
Her sinister thoughts were concealed from her brother. He would surely disapprove of what she was planning, if Hunter knew what she was planning.
Adrienne inwardly sighed. It would be better if her brother returned to the barracks with their Uncle Reese. With her limited resources, it would be hard to keep him safe.
