Chapter 100: A Wife Tending to Her Sick Husband (2)

Adrienne tucked Noah in for his afternoon nap and when she stepped out of his room, it was just in time for Doctor Lin and Butler Chang to come out from Lennox’s room. She rushed and joined them, intending to find out about Lennox’s condition.

"The pain is more prominent as the anasthesia from his recent surgery has completely worn off. He can feel everything now and it causes him discomfort. I’ve already changed his pain medicine to something else. It should help relieve the pain for him to gain some sleep."

Adrienne was relieved to hear that it wasn’t serious. She asked Butler Chang if she could see Lennox and he agreed easily. She knocked on Lennox’s door twice and waited. It didn’t take too long before she heard Lennox’s voice telling her to enter.

As she held the doorknob, Adrienne hesitated for a moment. Though she and Lennox had been close acquaintances for some time now and were engaged to each other, it was still inappropriate for her to enter his room. However, since she was already there, it was too late to back out now.

She opened the door and her eyes were greeted by the darkness of the room. Perhaps because Lennox hadn’t been able to sleep a wink these days, he had kept the room dark to avoid the brightness during the day. It probably made him feel worse and she understood that. As she walked in, she noticed that the room was actually dimly lit, allowing her to see the rest of the room.

"Addie? What brings you here today?" Lennox was seated on his bed and looked ghastly. Adrienne could clearly see that he was exhausted.

She moved closer to the bed and pulled the stool for her to sit on. She then gave Lennox a good look and noticed that his darkening circles beneath his eyes were more apparent than ever. Just as she thought he was recovering well, he suddenly fell sick like this. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Just dropped by to pay you and the children a visit. I didn’t think I would see you in this state."

Lennox gave her a weak smile. "I never wanted you to see me like this."

Adrienne huffed in response. She thought Lennox was being silly.

"We’re to become husband and wife someday and you don’t want me to see this?"

Lennox shut his eyes and groaned a little. "Help me to lie down?"

Adrienne moved to the other side of the bed and assisted him to lay on his back. She pressed a button on the side of his bed to adjust it to his preferred position. She then fixed the blanket on top of him, making sure he was comfortable.

As she looked at him, the thought of her acting like a wife tending to her sick husband made Adrienne chuckle inwardly. In her previous life, she had never seen Alistair fall sick and even if she knew he was, she never had the chance to take care of him.

’Not that I want to.’ She thought. With all the money he had, Alistair could find someone to nurse him back to health.

Lennox was the same, but Adrienne didn’t feel any hint of repulsion towards him. Perhaps because she knew that they were on the same boat and that Lennox wouldn’t dare to harm her.

"You should try to get some sleep." She told him as she returned to her seat.

Lennox hummed and cracked an eye open to glance at her.

"I’m trying, but the pain is keeping me up these days. It’s a good thing Doctor Lin prescribed me with a new medicine. I could already feel the pain lessening."

"That’s good news." Adrienne looked around, noticing that there were only essential items within the room. It seemed that Lennox only used this room for sleeping as there were no laptops or documents to be found on his bedside table, aside from a glass of water and a bottle of pills.

"You don’t look good as well, Addie. What’s bothering you this time? Don’t think you can hide it from me." Lennox gave her a pointed look as if daring her to deny his words.

Adrienne rested her cheek against the back of her hand as she regarded him. It was really hard to hide things from him.

"I just found out that I have a blood related older brother." She admitted softly.

"Isn’t that a good thing? Why do you sound dispirited though?"

Adrienne lowered her gaze, but Lennox had already seen the uneasiness in her eyes.

"Hunter Nian is my brother." She said out of the blue, rendering the man before her speechless.

It took sometime before Lennox recovered from his shock. He also couldn’t believe that the man who’d been shooting him cold stares these past weeks was none other than Adrienne’s older brother. He frowned, thinking that he’d already messed up as he had offended his future brother-in-law without knowing. Had he known Hunter Nian was Adrienne’s brother, he would have tried to leave a better impression on him.

"Are you sure?" He asked. There must be a mistake. How did her bodyguard end up being her brother? Lennox couldn’t understand.

"It’s my Uncle Reese who uncovered the truth. He offended the Ji family, so this complicates things for us."

"The Ji family?" That immediately piqued Lennox’s curiosity. "How did he offend them?"

"Do you know them? Hunter pressed a legal charge against Prosecutor Ji, claiming that he’d been partial to the person who murdered his adopted mother. Uncle Reese is still figuring out the best course of action to assist my brother."

"If we were married, this wouldn’t be a problem. The Ji family owes the Qin family a lot and won’t dare to do anything to offend us. However, since this isn’t the case, wouldn’t it be better if your brother seek your Uncle Reese for protection? As long as he is with your uncle, the Ji family would need to think twice before making a move against him. The Zhao family is also a force that the Ji family can’t afford to offend at the moment."
