Chapter 65: Chapter 65: I’m Her Dad

They chatted for most of the study hall period. After dinner, Holly Winslow called Mortimer Quincy from the restroom. "Scholar Quincy, I have some bad news for you."

Hearing her cryptic words, Mortimer Quincy stopped writing. He raised an eyebrow. "Pregnant?"

Beside him, Zeke Zane, who was in the middle of a game, was so shocked that his phone fell to the floor with a THUD.

Mortimer Quincy shot him a look.

Holly Winslow was left speechless.

’Pregnant, my butt!’

She pouted, complaining, "Mortimer Quincy, can you be serious for a second? I’m trying to tell you something. If you keep this up, I’m going to get mad. The kind of mad you can’t talk me out of."

Hearing his girl’s classic line, Mortimer Quincy’s lips curled into a smile. "I was wrong. My dear wife, please, go on."

Just then, the conversation of two girls drifted over from the stalls.

"I’m taking a dump. Go get me some toilet paper from the classroom."

"Okay."

Holly Winslow was speechless.

So was Mortimer Quincy.

"You’re in the restroom?"

Holly Winslow hummed shamelessly in agreement. She’d even farted in front of him before. In a small voice, she said, "My legs are going numb from squatting."

Mortimer Quincy chuckled. "Call me back when you’re done. Don’t squat for too long, you’ll run out of oxygen."

"Wait, I haven’t told you the bad news yet!"

Holly Winslow stopped dragging it out. "The student who gets first place on the finals this time gets to be a visiting student at Jarton High next semester," she said. "Honey, I won’t be able to be your classmate."

Hearing this, Mortimer Quincy frowned for a moment before his expression returned to normal. "How many days until final exams?"

Holly Winslow counted on her fingers. "Ten days."

"That’s not too late. Starting today, I’ll call you after evening study hall to go over lessons. I’ll focus on the most important topics."

Mortimer Quincy pulled out his math textbook and began underlining the key concepts, making it easier to explain them to her that night.

Holly Winslow hummed in agreement.

"Sweetheart, I know it’ll be tough for a while," Mortimer Quincy said, offering a little temptation. "But once you’re at the same school as me, I’ll get your meals for you every day, help with your cleaning duties, and fetch your water."

’He knew his girl’s personality best. Give her a little incentive, and she’d get things done in a flash.’

Holly Winslow’s eyes lit up. She seized the opportunity to add another condition. "You’ll have to do the dishes, too."

"Okay, I promise. All of it. Now, give me a kiss." Mortimer Quincy made a kissing sound into the phone.

Zeke Zane was speechless.

’I really don’t want to live anymore.’

’Teacher, I want to switch seats.’

...

After that, the two began their remote tutoring sessions. Mortimer Quincy would find time during the day to prepare, then start teaching her as soon as he got home from evening study hall. They didn’t go to bed until eleven-thirty each night.

Afraid of disturbing her sleeping classmates, Holly Winslow would wait until the restroom was empty, then go inside and turn on the light to listen to Mortimer Quincy’s lecture. She would only speak up when there was something she didn’t understand.

On the day of the final exams, Holly Winslow was nervous for a bit, but the math test went much more smoothly than she’d expected. All of the major question types Mortimer Quincy had singled out for her were on it.

Once math was over, Holly Winslow wasn’t worried anymore. Her other subjects went well too, though the questions this time were a bit harder than the ones on the midterms.

The day exams ended, Wyatt Winslow drove to the school to pick Holly Winslow up and help her move her things.

In past years, Holly Winslow would head to the Winslow family home as soon as winter break began, but this year she had signed up for tutoring and didn’t go.

On the day grades were posted online, Holly Winslow and Mortimer Quincy were at Peisheng for their physics class.

After third period, Holly Winslow quickly pulled out her phone, went to the website her teacher had provided, and entered her student ID and password. Then she shoved the phone into Mortimer Quincy’s hands. "I’m so nervous! You look first, then tell me."

’Seeing her with her eyes squeezed shut, her little mouth babbling on, was unbearably cute.’

Mortimer Quincy couldn’t help but smile, but his survival instinct kept him from laughing out loud. Otherwise, his girl would surely come at him with her claws.

He looked down and tapped on the "Student Grade Inquiry" link. Holly Winslow: Language Arts 123, Math 132, English 150, Chemistry 92, Biology 95, Physics 90. Total Score: 682. Grade Rank: 1. Class Rank: 1.

He breathed a sigh of relief.

Holly Winslow, eyes still squeezed shut, was muttering nervously, "Mortimer Quincy, did I make it?"

Mortimer Quincy leaned in close to her and called out, "Sweetheart, open your eyes."

The moment Holly Winslow opened her eyes, he gave her a quick kiss, then ruffled her hair. "Congrats, sweetheart. You took first place." He then showed her the phone.

Seeing the scores on the phone, Holly Winslow smiled so wide her eyes curved into crescents. "Mortimer Quincy, I want two hamburgers and a Coke for lunch!"

"Alright, anything you want," Mortimer Quincy said.

...

When she got home after her afternoon tutoring session, Wyatt Winslow had already finished making dinner.

After dropping her bookbag, Holly Winslow threw her arms around Wyatt Winslow. She raised her face excitedly. "Dad, guess what I scored on my finals!"

"What did you score?"

Wyatt Winslow stiffened for a moment, then raised a hand to pat her on the head. He froze again the next second. It seemed like it had been a long time since he’d last done that.

Holly Winslow pretended not to notice. She giggled. "682! Dad, aren’t I amazing? Hurry up and praise me."

Hearing her score was 682, Wyatt Winslow was stunned for a moment. His expression quickly turned serious again, but his eyes softened considerably. "Not bad. Keep up the good work."

"Hehe, Dad, you have to give me some extra lucky money this year," Holly Winslow said, shaking his arm playfully.

Wyatt Winslow nodded. "Alright."

Jarton High’s results came out two days after Jarton Second High’s. That rascal Mortimer Quincy scored a 746, improving by another two points.

’To still be improving with a score like that...’ Holly Winslow felt a little discouraged.

The holiday break felt a lot like the school term. Peisheng didn’t stop classes until the twenty-eighth day of the last lunar month.

The next day, Wyatt Winslow took Holly Winslow back to the Winslow family home to celebrate the New Year. Mortimer Quincy also returned to the Quincy family home. Before he left, he bought his girl a new outfit for the holiday.

The village was always lively during the New Year, as many of the children who had left would return. Holly Winslow had grown up with them, and they all made plans to hang out. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

On the evening of the thirty-first, Shane Lester and their friends invited her to go out and set off fireworks.

She left her phone at home.

Around nine o’clock, Holly Winslow’s phone started ringing nonstop. Wyatt Winslow picked it up and glanced at the caller ID: Scholar Quincy.

He put it back down.

But the phone kept ringing.

Joan Sawyer’s gaze drifted from the television to Wyatt Winslow. "Dex, you should answer that for Holly. It might be something urgent."

Wyatt Winslow hesitated before answering. Just as he was about to speak, a young man’s voice came from the other end. "Sweetheart, where’d you run off to? The moment I’m not around, you start running wild?"

"Hm? Feeling too guilty to talk, sweetheart?"

Wyatt Winslow’s already stern face grew even grimmer. In a heavy voice, he said, "This is her father. What is it?"

The other end was silent for a good ten seconds. "Uncle Winslow, I was looking for Holly about a question."

"She went out."

Wyatt Winslow pressed his lips together. He wanted to scold the boy for using such familiar terms, but he thought better of it and held his tongue. In the end, he just hung up.

When Holly Winslow got back, Joan Sawyer told her that someone had called and Wyatt Winslow had answered it for her.

The moment she heard that, she knew Mortimer Quincy and Wyatt Winslow had probably had another run-in.

"..."

She shot a cautious glance at Wyatt Winslow. His expression seemed normal. ’Mortimer Quincy probably didn’t say anything too out of line,’ she thought, breathing a sigh of relief.

She went back to her room and called Mortimer Quincy. The call connected, but the other end was silent.

She said, "Honey, are you there?"

Mortimer Quincy’s voice was full of grievance. "Sweetheart, I just had a run-in with Dad. I’m scared. I need kisses and hugs and to be held up high."
