Chapter 100: Chapter 100: It Has Nothing to Do with You, Even If She Grew on Your Head

Sunday, around 4:30 PM.

Wyatt Winslow was taking Holly Winslow to school, so Mortimer Quincy went on ahead by himself, all alone.

Holly was wearing a long, light green daisy-print dress with a pair of white canvas shoes. Her hair was tied back in a ponytail, making her look youthful and vibrant.

Wyatt glanced at her a few times and, for the first time in ages, offered a compliment. "You look nice."

Hearing the compliment, Holly froze for a moment. When she snapped out of it, she shouldered her backpack, looked at Wyatt, and returned the praise earnestly. "You’re handsome too, Dad."

A little flustered by her praise, Wyatt grabbed the car keys and the bag with her clothes. "Got everything?"

Holly nodded.

On Sundays, the school gate was always lined with fruit stands and snack stalls.

Wyatt had several pounds of bananas and apples weighed out for Holly. Just as he was about to pay, he saw Shane Lester arriving for school.

Shane was in his usual school uniform. He’d spotted them too and hurried over to greet them. "Uncle Winslow, Holly." As he spoke, he couldn’t help but steal a few extra glances at Holly.

’She looks so pretty in a dress.’

Wyatt naturally noticed. He gave Shane a longer look, then nodded and had the vendor weigh out another portion of fruit for Shane, the same amount he’d gotten for Holly.

Shane waved his hands, embarrassed. "Uncle Winslow, please give them to Holly. I don’t need any. I’ve got a bunch of loquats in my bag."

The Lester Family had always been very kind to Holly, saving her a portion of any tasty treats they had. When Holly was little, she loved running over to the Lesters’ house.

Wyatt remembered their kindness. He handed the fruit to Shane. "Holly has her own. Take these."

Shane had no choice but to accept. "Thank you, Uncle Winslow."

When they reached the school gate, Wyatt, who couldn’t go inside, handed the snacks, fruit, and clothes to Holly. "Call me if anything comes up. Do you still have credit on your phone?"

Holly nodded. "I have over thirty yuan left. Dad, take care of yourself at home."

Just as she was about to take the bags, Shane intercepted them. "Holly, I’ll help you carry these. We’re on the same floor."

Holly was about to say he didn’t have to, but Wyatt said, "Thanks, Shane. I appreciate it."

...

Once they got to the second floor, Holly reached for the bags. "Thanks."

"Don’t mention it, Holly."

Shane seemed a little shy. Then, as if remembering something, he opened his backpack and gave her half of his loquats. "These are from the loquat tree in our yard. It bore a lot of fruit this year, so Grandma told me to bring some for you."

When she was little, Holly had certainly done her fair share of damage to the Lester Family’s loquat tree. She accepted the fruit with a smile. "Please thank Grandma Lester for me."

"No problem. I’ve gotta go." Shane glanced at the figure that had appeared at the doorway of the Rocket Class, then picked up his things and headed toward his own classroom.

Holly thought he left in a bit of a hurry but didn’t think much of it. She put the loquats into her fruit bag, and when she turned around, she jumped and couldn’t help but let out a small "Ah!"

That damn Mortimer Quincy was standing at the classroom door, staring at her as if he’d just caught her cheating.

She shot him an annoyed glare. "You scared me to death." As she spoke, she thrust all the bags she was holding at him.

Quincy the Vinegar Jar was radiating jealousy. "What’s there to be scared of? Hmm?"

He took the bags from her and added unhurriedly, "If you can’t explain yourself, you can copy the physics formulas a hundred times."

Holly: "..."

’All he ever does is make me copy formulas. Can’t he come up with something new?’

"You suddenly appeared behind me with that murderous look on your face. How could I not be scared?"

"I’ve been here since you two were standing at the door. How is that ’suddenly’? I think my dear wife has a guilty conscience," Mortimer said, refusing to let it go.

Holly: "..."

’Guilty conscience, my ass.’

She ignored Quincy the Vinegar Jar, walked past him into the classroom, and sat down.

Mortimer followed her. When he got to their seats, he disdainfully picked out the loquats and handed them to Zeke Zane and Pantheon. "Here, for you guys."

"This stuff is an eyesore."

Zeke Zane and Pantheon: "..."

’What the heck?’

Holly shot Mortimer a dissatisfied glare. He didn’t even leave one for her, and the Lester Family’s loquats were really sweet.

After putting the things down, Mortimer left the classroom again. Holly glanced out the window; it looked like he had gone downstairs.

"..."

She muttered under her breath, "I’m not even the one who’s mad."

Ten minutes or so passed, but Mortimer still hadn’t returned. Holly couldn’t focus on her homework anymore. She pulled out her phone and called a certain someone, but he didn’t pick up.

She poked her finger a few times at the picture of the boy on her screen with his face smeared with cake. "Still not answering?! You’ve got some nerve, Quincy the Puppy."

Just then, her desk shook slightly. She turned to see a huge crate of loquats on it. She stared at Mortimer, who was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt. "..."

Quincy the Moneybags said coolly, "Go on, eat. When you finish, I’ll buy more. Anything someone else can give you, I can give you too. Don’t accept things from other people from now on, understand?"

Holly: "..."

Zeke Zane and Pantheon, who were doing their homework, were force-fed a faceful of PDA. "..."

Zeke Zane didn’t want to stay in the classroom for another second. "Forrest, wanna take a day trip to the bathroom?"

"Let’s go. If we don’t, I’m gonna choke to death on all this lovey-dovey crap," Pantheon said, immediately snapping his notebook shut.

The two of them fled the classroom.

Holly: "..."

She looked at Mortimer and said very seriously, "I think all that money has gone to your head." She even nodded her little head as she said it.

Mortimer: "..."

’Damn it, I’m so pissed I could explode.’

He gritted his teeth. "Let me see your homework."

Holly had a bad feeling. "..."

And sure enough, that scoundrel Mortimer pointed at her homework, using his authority for personal revenge. "Wrong, wrong, wrong. Copy it all a hundred times."

Holly: "..."

’Son of a bitch, Mortimer.’

...

That petty scoundrel Mortimer could no longer tolerate his "love rival," Shane Lester.

On Monday, their gym class was scheduled at the same time as Class Five’s.

Shane Lester was in Class Five.

There was only one basketball court. The Rocket Class got there first, so the boys from Class Five asked if they could play together.

It was normal for two classes to play basketball together, so Pantheon and the others readily agreed.

Mortimer’s eyes swept over the Class Five boys and landed on Shane. With an almost imperceptible arch of his eyebrow, he tossed the basketball to Shane. "Your ball first."

Over by the benches, Holly, who was holding a classical Chinese text, glanced up when she heard Mortimer’s voice.

After all, the two of them were a legally married couple. Holly knew what that scoundrel Mortimer was up to just by the way he postured.

During the game, Mortimer completely shut Shane down, not letting him get a single shot off. The suppression was so obvious that everyone else noticed.

During a break in the game...

Pantheon bent over, catching his breath. He lifted the hem of his shirt to wipe away some sweat. "Why is Mortimer shutting that guy down so hard? If I were him, I’d be suffocating."

Next to him, Chase Hawkins made one of his characteristically startling comments: "Doesn’t it feel like rivals in love meeting, their eyes blazing with hatred?"

Pantheon: "..."

Zeke Zane: "..."

’He’s actually got a point.’

Both of them looked toward Holly. She was still off to the side, memorizing from her little classical Chinese text, completely unconcerned with the battle unfolding on the court.

"So, who exactly is Mortimer’s girlfriend? The curiosity is killing me. I keep imagining some kind of goddess," Paul Powell muttered, leaning in.

Pantheon’s eyes darted around, and he said meaningfully, "I think ’the cousin’ is quite the goddess."

"’The cousin’ is definitely my type," Chase Hawkins said, nodding in agreement as he looked in Holly’s direction.

Mortimer, who had appeared beside him at some point, glared at him. "Even if she grew on your head, she’d have nothing to do with you."
