Chapter 44: A player

Once inside the room, Amelia replayed the events in her head and realised that she had felt her mark glow when she thought King Cyrus’s sword would strike her.

She lifted her hand to observe the mark.

What did it signify? Why did it appear on her hand? What was its use? There were many questions, but no one to answer them.

With a sigh, she lay under the covers before closing her eyes to sleep.

In her dream, she imagined a life with King Cyrus, a happy life where he would love her to the moon and back, and she would repay him with more loyalty and love from her side.

As she was about to kiss King Cyrus in her dreams, she felt someone was watching her. It was a creepy yet warm gaze.

Amelia turned to see who it was, but all she could see was a silhouette of a person standing with a scythe.

"Cyrus, can you see him?" She asked, a little perplexed, when the hooded man smiled.

"I don’t see anyone. Are you cheating on me, Amelia?" King Cyrus asked, and Amelia shook her head repetitively.

"No... no..." Amelia said to catch his attention, but Cyrus left her hand.

The hooded man suddenly smiled at her, appearing before her.

"I told you, princess. You are mine. I am your fate. No one can have you but me," The man said.

"How dare you give your first kiss to someone else when I wasn’t here? You deserve a punishment," He continued before he leaned in and kissed her forcefully.

Amelia gasped as she woke up from her other dream.

She looked around, and the coldness of the other side of the bed indicated that Cyrus had not returned to the room.

She sighed. Her mind went back to that hooded man. He was another mystery in her life.

She thought that now that she knew about what happened in her past, things would be easier as she would pay back everyone who hurt her.

However, how was she supposed to do that with all these new elements adding to her life?

She looked at the time and got out of bed to prepare for another day at University.

The environment at the breakfast table was silent.

The maids and everyone felt like they were walking on eggshells around the King.

His brows were knitted, like he was in deep thought as he sat there.

"I am sorry for being late," Amelia rushed to the dining room, her dress flaring with her movement.

Fabian pressed his lips into a thin line. He didn’t want his King to scold the girl early in the morning after what he did to her yesterday.

He was about to interrupt when King Cyrus said, "You are on time. I came early,".

Everyone stood there, watching their king with a perplexed expression.

Did their king just say a normal statement rather than snapping at the girl? While this should be normal, why did it look abnormal when their King did that?

Even Amelia paused before she nodded meekly and sat at the table.

Without looking at the King, she piled her plate with food to eat quickly so she wouldn’t drag the King.

But Cyrus’s gaze, which went to her lips repetitively as that kiss wasn’t leaving his mind, looked at the mindless girl.

How could she eat without even looking at him once? Did that kiss not bother her at all? Even when it was her first kiss? Did it not make her nervous?

Was a kiss so casual for her that she didn’t even give it a second thought?

What kind of seductress was she? She was definitely a player. Or why would she vow her loyalty and love to him right after marrying, even when she was deeply in love with Killian?

Thinking all those things, Cyrus’s gaze darkened, and he glared at the girl from the corner of his eye.

His aura seemed to change, and Amelia, who felt like someone was shooting daggers at her, looked to her right, where the King was sitting. Her mouth was stuffed with food, making her look like a bunny as she looked at him with an innocent expression.

Seeing her looking at him like this, Cyrus scoffed inwardly.

Look at her trying to be cute to melt my heart. He thought before he ate his food in silence, stealing glances at her.

Meanwhile, Amelia, who just wanted to eat quickly because she knew her presence was probably bothering the King, increased her speed to eat, coughing loudly when she took too much food in one go.

Miss Quinn rushed to help their Princess because everyone in the palace thought that the girl was scared of their King after he made her kneel before the palace, completely unaware of what transpired between the two after that.

"Here," Cyrus gave her the glass of water, and Amelia looked at her with tears in her eyes because of the violent coughing.

Her expression made his heart move again, as she looked so vulnerable. Cyrus took a deep, shaky breath before he stood.

He placed his hand on her back and started patting it softly, wanting to help her.

Well, it was soft according to him. Amelia, who felt her entire body shaking because of the beating, wanted to cry out loud at his actions.

"Sir, I will do it," Miss Quinn rushed to the girl’s rescue, and Cyrus furrowed his brow when he looked at the head of the maid.

He hummed vaguely before sitting back in his seat to eat.

Miss Quinn rubbed Amelia’s back, who nodded at the lady to tell her she was okay now.

Amelia looked at the King with a helpless expression. She knew he hated him, but must he use this kind of opportunity to kill her nearly? For a moment, she thought she would die from his patting her back rather than choking on food.

Cyrus misunderstood her expression and rolled his eyes.

"No need to thank me," he said casually.

Amelia -"..." Why was this man so full of himself?!

Miss Quinn and Fabian- "..." Sir, are you sure she wants to thank you after what you did? The girl isn’t your soldier that you patted like that.

They wanted to ask, but kept their thoughts to themselves.

Once the breakfast ended, Amelia bid goodbye to Miss Quinn and Fabian after taking the bento box.

As she sat inside the car, her gaze moved to the same place where she had been kneeling the previous day.

A sigh escaped her lips.

Cyrus, also leaving to work and meet his ministers, caught the girl looking at the spot where she had been kneeling.

His eyes held a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts that were entangled and beyond someone’s understanding as he looked back at the girl with an unexplainable expression.
