Chapter 190: The final trial

The throne room of the palace was decorated for the third test in a blue and golden theme. The ministers and the guards were asked to dress accordingly for a celebration, ready to celebrate the announcement of their queen.

The seats were pulled back, forming a semicircle on either side, while the middle way was cleared from the entrance of the room to the throne for more effortless movement.

That place was also supposed to be used for the last test, the loyalty test.

Just like always, the royal family took their place on the first-floor balcony, designed for an unobstructed view and to establish their dominance.

Rosaline looked at her mother and smiled.

"This is the last test, Mom. What do you think? Will Princess Amelia pass?" She asked.

Amora looked at the grandeur of the event and smiled softly.

"I want her to." She whispered.

Rosaline’s brows quirked.

"Cyrus isn’t here, Mom. You can be truthful with me. We all know you dislike her," Rosaline commented in a hushed tone.

Amora furrowed her brows.

"When did I say I disliked that girl? Cyrus or Amelia isn’t here, and that’s why I am saying it. I just wanted the best for Cyrus, someone who could handle his anger and provide him happiness. And I see it in Amelia, which is another reason I am so tough with her. I have a duty to Sebastian and Gloria," Amora said.

Rosaline was surprised to hear her mother’s words but understood where she was coming from. She smiled and nodded before looking at Cyrus, who entered the room.

Her brows furrowed when she noticed him. For everyone, nothing might be wrong, but a keen observer like her could see he was wounded even if he was concealing it so nicely.

"Did we have an attack or something?" She asked her husband, Alistair, who shook his head, making her body in return.

Cyrus took his seat, with Kyle sitting in his direct subordinate’s position.

"Today marks the last day of the third and final test phase of the Queen trials, which focuses on loyalty. The candidates who would be competing are..." Fabian said before he clapped his hands to signal for the participants to enter.

Luna Maximine entered first, looking all elegant and poised, followed by Hannah, who had a confident smile as her gaze looked straight at the throne of the queen.

Cyrus, whose gaze was stern and unreadable, eased his expression a little, ready to appear happy and encouraging for his wife. He kept looking at the entrance, waiting for Amelia to show up, wanting to see what dress she chose for the event.

However, even after a few minutes, Amelia didn’t show up, and Cyrus’s brows furrowed.

Amora looked at Cyrus for answers, and judging from his expression, it was clear that even he didn’t know what was going on.

"Don’t tell me she is late today, too," someone whispered through the crowd, and Amora’s expression turned sour.

"What is going on? Where is Princess—I mean Participant Amelia?" Amora asked.

Cyrus shook his head and looked at Kyle for answers, who looked equally confused and oblivious to what was going on.

Out of the blue, a guard walked inside the room, and everyone’s gaze shifted to him while he gave a letter to Fabian.

Fabian opened the letter, his hands freezing for a second, his gaze shifting to Cyrus, unsure how to deliver the message.

He gulped.

"What is it?" Cyrus asked, his gaze hard and his voice colder now.

"Participant Amelia doesn’t wish to continue through the trials. She has decided to quit," Fabian said.

Cyrus froze in his place, unable to process the information for some time before his gaze found his grandmother’s. He didn’t blame Amelia even for a second.

Instead, he blamed this evil ritual that questioned her position as his wife and couldn’t help but clench his fist around the armrest.

The pressure from his grip was so brutal that the armrest broke in his hands, making everyone gasp and gulp.

Not many people knew about Amelia’s position, and thus, everyone thought the king was angry at the blatant disrespect. Hushed whispers started to echo in the silent hall.

"I will look into it." Kyle was about to stand when Amora’s words stopped him.

"No. We can’t stop the trials for one person. It will go through with candidates Luna Maximine and Hannah." Amora announced.

Sylas growled inside Cyrus, but the man took a deep breath before nodding.

It didn’t matter. The final decision was still his. Even he wanted to see what his grandmother had in the closet to test Maximine’s and Hannah’s loyalty, even when she knew how Hannah had tried to ambush Amelia earlier.

He pulled out his phone, dialing Amelia’s number silently, clenching his jaw when the call didn’t go through.

Amora looked at the guards and clapped her hands.

"Separate the two of them into two different rooms," Amora said.

Everyone looked at her, confused. Wasn’t the test supposed to happen before everyone?

However, as the elder former Luna Queen, she had the right to change the rules, and thus, no one said a word.

The two girls were taken to the two different rooms while the screen was set up for everyone to watch.

"Bring them," Amora ordered next.

Cyrus leaned back in his throne seat, feeling anxious and uneasy, his mind going over all the things that his wife must’ve thought before finally deciding to drop out.

She wanted to win this for him. She promised him that. Then why? He wondered.

He nodded at Fabian, asking him to arrange a team to look for her, just to ensure she was safe and nothing happened to force her to drop when he couldn’t meet her.

Inside one of the rooms, Hannah, who didn’t know what kind of test would be given to her, pursed her lips, pacing around as she studied the room for any reference.

She finally noticed a letter-like object under the vase on the corner shelf and walked over to it.

She pulled the note out and read its content aloud.

"To prove your loyalty, you must kill one." The note said, and Hannah was about to turn it when a mouse appeared around her foot out of nowhere, making her squeak in surprise.

She cursed out loud and looked around, her heart skipping a beat when she saw her mother and father entering the room.

"Dad? Mom? What are you doing here?" Hannah asked, confused.

Jessica shook her head.

"I am not sure, Anna. They said we needed to be here to help you through the test," Thames said.

Hannah furrowed her brows before freezing in her place.

She looked at the note and then at the two, finally connecting the dots.

"Are you guys for real?" Hannah screamed at the camera.

"The rules are rules," the intercom said.

Jessica was the first one to rush to her daughter.

"What is it? Why are you angry, baby girl? What does it say?" She asked and was about to look at the note when the intercom spoke again.

"You can’t show your task to anyone. It’s about your loyalty," Amora said.

Hannah crushed the note before taking a deep, shaky breath.

What kind of test was this? On one side was her mother, who had gone through so much and suffered for a legal position by her father’s side. On the other side was the man who killed his wife and kids so he could give a better future to her, always favoring her over Amelia.

How could she choose? Hannah wondered, tears brimming in her eyes.

She took a deep, shaky breath, falling on her knees.

She looked at her mom and dad, weighing the future.

It was her mother’s dream to see her as a queen. She even said she was ready to pay any price.

She needed her dad in the long run because he was the patriarch, no?

Hannah wiped her tears before she walked to the table, her hand clasping around the dagger. Her shoulders shook with anger and pain.

Unable to bear seeing her daughter cry like this, Jessica rushed to hug her.

Thames, who didn’t know how to react, walked over to hug her daughter too.

"Hey, whatever it is, we know you’ll make the right choice. Just know that we are always with you and will always respect your decision," Thames said.

Jessica and Thames hugged Hannah at the same time.

Hannah cried in their arms.

"I am sorry. I am so sorry," Hannah whispered before she tightened her hold on the dagger and pushed it straight into her mother’s chest.

Jessica’s body froze.

Her hands loosened around Hannah’s, and she staggered back, unable to utter a word.

"Hann—" blood flew out of Jessica’s mouth before she fell to the side.

Thames pulled away in time to see his wife’s eyes closing when he heard her painful voice and couldn’t help but look at his daughter in horror.

"What did you do? How could you—" He asked.

Hannah fell on her knees beside her mother’s body.

"It was either her or you. I had to kill one to prove my loyalty!" Hannah screamed before yelling in pain and anger.

Thames’s pupils dilated, and he was about to ask her how she could do this when the guards walked inside and pulled him out of the room, leaving a crying Hannah there.

To say everyone who watched the scene was in shock would be an understatement.

They didn’t know how to react after watching it.
