Chapter 91: New Skill

To Cassandra’s utter disappointment, she didn’t wake up in the dragon’s arms..instead, she woke alone in her room.

Disappointed washed over her in waves, but at the same time, her skin tingled from the experience of last night.

How she was able to meet so many of his animal spirits and the way the dragon had given her a ride, showing her around and then she had slept in its massive paws, nestled with him as if it was her personal pillow.

Her cheeks turned a bright shade of pink at the memories as she sat up in her bedding.

And then the recollection of the dream she had over the night surfaced in her brain. She had seen the most beautiful woman that might exist in her dream. The woman had very long silvery hair and an enchanting smile. The lady had placed her hand on Cassandra’s head and had said.

"My child! I know how difficult life is for you. Patience and so much will unfold for you. You are destined for greatness alongside your mate. Keep this goodness your heart possesses and help the pack. Your salvation will come. Trust me." She had vanished after that but Cassandra could swear she had seen that woman before.

She couldn’t help but touch her head where the lady had said her hand, feeling this deeper connection with her.

Who was she?

Cassandra’s head was a jumble of thoughts which was interrupted when there was a soft knock on her door.

"Come in!" Cassandra said, stretching her arms.

The door opened to reveal Ara. She took a small bow with a lovely smile on her face as she carried a fresh bucket of water.

"Good day, Luna!"

"Good day, Ara!" Cassandra answered with a hearty smile.

"Vera Haylia would like to see you. Let me help you with the bath," Ara informed her, making Cassandra leave her soft mattress.

"Thank you! Ara." Cassandra stripped out of her gown and made her way to the wash area in her chemise so Ara could help her.

Soon, she was all dressed up with her hair in a loose hairdo and a light gown of plum shade, which slightly cinched at the waist but nothing too tight.

The bangles Siroos had bought for last night remained in her arms. She moved her wrist and they clinked together making this light music which was pleasant to the ear.

They arrived for breakfast in the common area and Haylia was waiting for her.

"Good day, Vera Haylia!"

"Good day, Luna!" Cassandra observed how Haylia had finally addressed her with the proper title and wondered how she had a change of heart or if Siroos might have spoken to her.

The latter seemed a more viable option although she had never complained about it.

"Have a seat, we have much to discuss," Haylia spoke again, she seemed serious but not angered. A lot was going on in her mind. Ara pulled the chair back so Cassandra could sit.

"Please! Go ahead," Cassandra answered, elegantly placing her hands on the table. She was again a tad disappointed to see that Siroos wasn’t on the breakfast table either.

"After the morning meal, I will take you to the chamber where women make jute baskets and sew clothes. We sell them to other packs and women keep the earnings for that. As their Luna, you must learn this skill," Haylia explained, taking a small bite of her bread after dipping it in the stew.

"I am looking forward to it. The baskets I saw last night were very well made and were so colourful," Cassandra appreciatively answered. She had learnt some knitting and embroidery but she had never woven hand baskets.

"Yes! Our women are very talented in hand weaving and pottery. Once you get a hold of basket-making then we will move to pottery. Because that’s a difficult skill and takes years of practice to master."

Cassandra could only nod while taking in every word. Pottery indeed was not an easy skill but she very much wanted to try.

Lana had arrived with her food and placed it in front of her Luna.

"Pleasant day, Luna. I made eggs and bread just the way you like it," she greeted her with tenderness she only showed Cassandra.

"I appreciate it," Cassandra thanked and appreciated her beta woman.

"After the session with me and the girls, you will start your training with Siroos in the evening. We have Luna Trials next month. He will prepare you for it," Haylia explained and Cassandra remembered Siroos speaking to her on the matter.

It scared her, the name, the trials.

What if she failed?

What if she lost?

But she kept her apprehensions to herself and promised to try her utmost best.

"I am ready for the challenges and will not disappoint you, my mate or my pack," she announced with a delicate but determined smile.

"I believe in you, Luna. You are smart and strong-willed. With Siroos’s training, you will be prepared for anything that might come your way. He, at the moment, is getting the training arena ready so he can start with you. Remember, he might be your mate, but he is a fierce trainer who spares no one when it comes to drill and practice. Beware, for you have been warned, he can get a tad grumpy."

Haylia smiled after her short speech, and it wasn’t a condescending smile; it was one like sharing a secret with her daughter-in-law.

Cassandra placed her hand in front of her mouth and giggled.

"That bad?" She asked, unable to hold back her grin. Even his name made delectable sparks to erupt in her gut.

"Worst. He goes all out on Faris and makes his grown warriors cry with the way he trains them." Haylia shook her head, and Cassandra wondered how Siroos would be with her.

Would he be harsh?

Would he get angry?

He used to be grumpy with her but not anymore. Her heart lurched at the thought though that he might return to his usual brooding self.

She understood training was not a piece of cake; it required sweat and blood, for she had seen it when she was doing her sword practice with her mentor. He went all out with her, never considering her a princess but a student.

Her instincts told her that Siroos wouldn’t be any different. He wished for her to be strong and she wouldn’t disappoint him. She would work diligently.

"Well, I will try to not give him a reason to complain."

"Oh! Believe me, Luna. He will find one. But at the end of the day, you will be stronger and will have a clear perspective about yourself. Your burdens will lighten. He has that tendency about him to make someone feel self-assured."

Haylia was all praises for her son and Cassandra politely smiled, knowing she was right on this matter and had every right to be proud of her unique son. She was sure there was no one like Siroos in this world.

The fact that Haylia was such a devoted mother made Cassandra happy but she was still wary of her as a mother-in-law.

Although Cassandra was always polite with her, she kept her at arm’s length to not get hurt because mothers tend to overlook the shortcomings of their sons but not daughter-in-laws.

"And I will learn everything he will teach me."

After the morning meal was done, the younger and the older woman made their way towards the weaving area. It was a well-lit place with natural light flooding it from the top. The roof seemed to have caved in centuries ago, leaving a huge hole for air and light.

Women sat on jute-woven mats and were busy with their work. From young to old, they giggled, told stories while their hands created magic.

Since jute was not native to Dusartine, men usually purchased jute threads from other areas. They dyed them with different colours and then baskets were woven from it.

"Luna! Vera!" Everyone got up from their positions and bowed respectfully.

"Please! Take your seats," Cassandra politely said and offered a kind smile. They settled and resumed work.

"Give us some jute yarn," Haylia asked.

A ball of orange jute yarn was presented to Cassandra and she accepted it with a polite nod.

"Let me guide you on how to start making a jute basket," Haylia offered and Cassandra couldn’t have shaken her head more quickly.

The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law duo perched themselves on the mat and began basket-making.

Haylia’s expert hands showed her how to first create a solid base and then spin the jute threads around diagonally and horizontally to create different designs.

Every turn and patch not only strengthened the basket but created a unique design as well.

Cassandra was impressed and thus her journey to learn a new skill began. frёeωebɳovel.com

Haylia handed over the jute threads to Cassandra and she began to weave taking her time.
