Compared to Leon’s self-created R9 energy shield, the AEGIS-V Modulator blueprint was a big defensive upgrade in his repertoire.
Taking its name from the mythological shield of Zeus and Athena who were apparently famous mythical characters from the era before Genesis, the AEGIS-V is a multi-phasic energy array that projects a shimmering, translucent barrier around the user. But it was different from most energy shields.
Unlike the R9 energy shield, the AEGIS-V can also be used on small aircrafts!
And unlike standard ’bubble’ shields like the R9 that simply tank hits until they break, the AEGIS-V uses a modulator core to constantly adjust its frequency to match incoming fire.
Visually, it appears as a faint, honeycombed aura that flares into bright, localized geometric plates at the point of impact.
The advanced shield had 5 core properties and functions.
The first is the Adaptive Frequency Modulation that is unique to the "V" series. This module of the energy shield analyzes the energy signature or kinetic velocity of an attack in milliseconds and shifts the shield’s resonance in corresponding fashion to neutralize that specific threat more efficiently.
This was to avoid waste of energy and ADE.
The second core property is Kinetic-Energy Conversion. This features a "Repulsion Field" mechanic where the force of physical projectiles is absorbed by the shield and partially redirected outward, pushing back nearby enemies or slowing incoming missiles to a halt.
In a high intensity battle, this function was invaluable.
The third property is Variable Geometry, a function that allows the user to focus the shield’s strength.
The user can project a 360-degree sphere for general protection like normal energy shields, but the user can also project a high-density forward riot shield called "Fortification Wall" that is nearly unbreakable from the front.
The fourth property is Emergency Overload Venting.
With this function, if the shield takes a hit that would normally shatter it, the modulator can vent the excess energy into a blinding flash or a localized shockwave, protecting the internal hardware at the cost of a temporary shutdown.
The fifth property is its high capacity.
Compared to standard deflectors and other energy shields, the AEGIS-V has a massive energy pool but requires a steady power source. It regenerates slower than lighter models, favoring "tanking" sustained fire over quick skirmishing.
In this aspect, the R9 energy shield was still better at quick skirmishes simply because of its unique aspect to stack multiple R9 energy shields on each other.
This property to stack multiple shields was not integrated in the AEGIS-V energy shield. Afterall, a single AEGIS-V cost more than 10 R9s.
Despite that one weakness, overall, the AEGIS-V was a far better upgrade than the R9 energy shield.
It was the flagship energy shield that was used by the Freegrid Army on their best vessels and soldiers, and yet, Leon just got it like that without paying a dime.
’Having powerful friends is really a privilege’. He thought with a big grin as the reunion with his 2 old friends finally came to an end.
Only then did Leon focus on his smartphone and realized that he had unread messages; he put his phone on DND previously.

Leon looked at the sender and realized that more than half of the messages were sent by Tyla, 2 were sent by Daren, and the rest were sent by Talia.
’Talia?’ Leon was surprised.
He clicked on her message first.

["You came to Iron Reef and didn’t even bother to tell me? I can see that someone has become bigger than me now, I’ll skin you alive when I see you!"]
Leon blinked. ’Since when did Talia become this fiery?’
He focused on the final part of the message.

Reading that message, he could not help it as a big smile bloomed on his face.
Leon woke up in his shelter around mid-June, and now it was already late August. It was less than 4 months ago since he met Talia and the crew for the first time, but thinking back now, Leon felt like it was years ago.
The events of Community G when they fought the Zmer Gang and Parasite were still fresh in his head.
Thinking back, he chuckled. ’Then, Parasite was like an insurmountable mountain to me, but now he’s just like a bug’.
’I can crush him easily without even trying now’.
This underlined how much he’d grown since awakening in this world.
And just like that, before he knew it, less than 4 months since meeting Talia and her crew as one of the weakest in the crew, he was now undoubtedly the strongest Ascended among them.
’How time flies’. He thought with a smile.
Then he finally focused on Tyla and Daren’s messages.
Most of the messages were just the both of them telling him how much preferential treatment they were receiving in the capital city, and how much they’ve been enjoying themselves in the city since arriving.
Leon’s guess was that Ren Nora must have secretly influenced things to make their stay in the city extremely memorable.
Most of Tyla’s messages were pictures and videos, her final message was her sending him the name of the hotel that she already lodged for the both of them.
She wasn’t asking, she demanded him to come and spend the night with her.
"Uh..." Leon scratched the back of his head. "Why does this feel like I’m in some kind of bondage?"
"I’m a goddamn D Rank Mechanist now, dammit!" He thought.
In the end, he didn’t ghost Tyla like he did before.
The moment she adamantly decided to follow him, the situation changed.
She already made the bold decision to leave her comfort zone and explore the world with him, so it would be cruel if he kept on ghosting her.
Besides, after how much reminiscing he already did by spending time with his old friends today and learning so much about the world, Leon wanted to spend the night in the company of a beautiful woman.
And who else but Tyla?
He arrived after a few minutes.
