Chapter 224: Day 12 [2]

April 1st, Year 583 A.G.

09:33pm.

The leader of the Freegrid Collective snuck inside a small and unassuming tarpaulin tent inside the rebel army camp, Leon’s tent.

Inside this small and unassuming tent, unknown to the entire world except 3 men, there were 5 spire-like intricate cutting-edge machinery arranged in order in different points inside the tent... ADE dampeners!

Ghost-in-the-Machine!

Undetected, untraced, Ren Nora snuck inside the tent like a ghost.

The moment the leader of the Freegrid Collective emerged, he sat cross-legged on the bare ground and closed his eyes, silently meditating.

Leon stopped what he was doing and finally looked at the rebel leader with a complicated look in his eyes.

Despite being part of the planning, he still couldn’t help but feel like what Ren Nora was about to attempt was too risky. Heck, it was crazy.

After 5 minutes, Ren Nora opened his eyes.

Looking at him, Leon asked. "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Ren Nora grinned at the mercenary. "Are you finally feeling jitters when it’s time? You were the one with the ambitious ideas".

Leon didn’t laugh as with a serious look on his face, he looked at the rebel leader. "This is extremely dangerous".

Ren Nora shrugged. "When has it ever not been dangerous?"

"I’ve always been threading the edge of the abyss, by now I’m used to it".

He exhaled. "Your crazy plan at least gave me hope". He looked at Leon. "Don’t worry, I already made up my mind and no matter the outcome, I already made peace with it".

"If I perish, I perish".

Leon’s face was solemn.

Ren Nora intended to start his C Rank Trial right now immediately after 2 consecutive intense battles against General Sylvari Charr and the Federation Army within a single day, without rest!

This was the plan but now, Leon was feeling skeptical.

From the very first day that he met outsiders since awakening in this world, Talia Venn told him the importance and dangers of Ascended Trials.

One rule that was accepted by every Ascended was that Ascended should only ever attempt Trials when they’re in their optimal state.

Even Leon despite all his bravado and reckless style only ever attempted Trials after having enough rest to recover, both mentally and physically.

And yet here was Ren Nora, about to attempt a Trial immediately after 2 consecutive intense battles in a single day, and not just any Ascended Trial the C Rank Ascended Trial!

Ren Nora was going in completely blind.

He had no C Rank mentor to tell him about what to expect in a C Rank Trial and what to pay attention to or ignore.

He was going in blind, injured, and mentally exhausted.

Yet, this was the only way to complete the grand chess game of psychological warfare.

General Sylvari Charr would never expect Ren Nora to be bold and reckless enough to attempt the C Rank Trial immediately after such an intense battle that he even got injured, not to talk of 2 consecutive battles in a single day.

The reckless plan would successfully fool the enemies, buying as much time as possible but the biggest question stayed with Ren Nora.

Could he complete the C Rank Ascended Trial in such a state?

"There’s no use overthinking it," Ren Nora said when he saw the look on the mercenary’s face. "Thinking time is over, now it’s execution time".

"Let’s get it started".

Leon nodded solemnly, then he carefully picked a wire that was crackling with electrically charged neon green ADE with a plier.

This was Ren Nora’s Trial Catalyst.

All the ADE fluctuations being emitted by the wire were dampened by the 5 ADE dampeners that were installed in this tent.

Leon carefully brought it close, then Ren Nora resolutely touched it with his index finger. The moment he made contact with the naked wire, green electricity immediately surged through his body.

BZZZ!

Ren Nora’s eyes instantly turned unfocused as a rift was torn open in front of him inside the tiny tent.

All the energy fluctuations from the rift were dampened by the high-capacity ADE dampeners.

The first anomaly appeared in an unnatural grimace appearing on Ren Nora’s face. Seeing this, Leon’s heart skipped a beat as he watched this process drag on longer than usual, then after a few seconds everything suddenly died down and Ren Nora’s body went limp.

His consciousness was gone.

DING!

~----~

[Subject Consciousness Displaced – Trial Instance Active]

~----~

It already started.

Leon’s eyes flickered as he carefully peeked outside the tarpaulin tent, confirming that no one noticed the commotion inside here, then he picked his backpack, slung it on and quietly left the tent, locking it with his key.

His neighbors were already used to the strange mercenary who liked sneaking out at night, so no one found his actions suspicious.

Leon casually greeted a few rebel soldiers on the way, then he snuck away.

Instead of attempting the Trial inside the secure military base of the Freegrid Collective in Iron Reef, Ren Nora attempted the Trial to become a C Rank Ascended inside a nameless tent.

This was the final move in the grand game of psychological warfare that he played with the Federation Army.

No one would expect Ren Nora to be reckless and bold enough to attempt the C Rank Ascended Trial immediately after a battle and while injured.

And no one, absolutely no one would expect him to take on such a life-changing Trial exposed in the open inside a mundane unprotected tent while there were multiple reinforced military bases in the city.

This was a type of boldness that only men like Ren Nora could embody, boldness that bordered on madness and insanity.

Like Ren Nora would say. ’A bit of insanity is needed to break the system!’

...

20 minutes later, Leon in a mask entered the control data center that was in charge of all of Iron Reef’s data centers, city defense grid, and Purgatory.

This was the most important building in all of Iron Reef and yet, a mercenary who Ren Nora met just a few days ago got access inside.

This was the gamble of a mad man and to succeed, Ren Nora was willing to be mad and embrace help from strangers.

Inside the data center, Leon set his bag down.

BZZZ! 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

His grayish white ADE flared.

Miniaturization!

He started setting up his equipment and configuring the data center for the greatest underdog setup in the history of Neo-Tokara!

Tick! Tock!

Time ticked forward.
