Chapter 930: Chapter 475 Goose Goose Goose_2

"How are the chickens at Yeye’s household doing these past few days with their hatching?" Lian Manman asked.

"Just heard from your Third Aunt-in-law, she said ten have already hatched." Lady Zhang spoke as she picked up a needle and thread, climbing onto the kang.

"My brother’s?" Lian Manman glanced at the shoe sole in Lady Zhang’s hand; it seemed to be Wu Lang’s.

"Hmm." Lady Zhang rubbed the needle against her hair and began stitching the sole under the sunlight, "In another two days, your brother should be back, right?"

Wu Lang had been gone for several days, and Lady Zhang fretted over him countless times each day. At mealtime, she wondered whether Wu Lang was eating at the same time, whether the food suited his tastes, and whether he was going hungry. At bedtime, she worried aloud too. Nearly every conversation at home would inevitably lead to mentions of Wu Lang.

"My brother’s exams should be done on the second day of the third month. After the results are posted, he’ll still have visits to make here and there. He probably won’t be back until around the fifth or seventh day, at the earliest." Lian Manman explained.

Which meant it would still be another eight or nine days before Wu Lang returned.

"I wonder how my brother did on his exams." Xiao Qi pondered aloud.

"Definitely no problem." Lian Manman reassured him.

Taking advantage of everyone being engrossed in conversation, Da Hua silently crept off the kang, crouching low as it slinked toward the basket holding the chicks.

But just as it took two steps, Lian Manman spotted it.

Lian Manman scooped Da Hua back up.

Da Hua simply flopped onto its back on the kang, playfully swishing its tail while meowing and retracting its sharp claws into its soft paw pads, using only the padded part to paw at Lian Manman. It was both playing coy and seeking attention.

"It’s fixated on them," Lady Zhang said with a chuckle. "We’ll have to keep an eye on it going forward. This little cat knows better—it wouldn’t actually feast on our chickens. But indulging in playful mischief? That’s another matter. These chicks wouldn’t stand a chance against its antics."

In short, no matter how innocent Da Hua appeared, it was officially blacklisted.

...

As the days grew warmer, taking advantage of sunny weather, Lady Zhang, Lian Zhizhi, and Lian Manman brought out everyone’s layered clothing from the cabinet, aired them out, then repacked them into bundles, placing them on the top shelf of the cabinet, ready to be swapped for the cotton-padded clothes in a few days.

Some eager folks, fueled by the warm spell, had already switched to spring attire.

But the entire Lian Manman family was still bundled in cotton-padded clothes.

Spring warmth and autumn chill—that’s the age-old wellness wisdom passed down among farmstead families. During autumn, a bit of chill was fine, no need to rush into thick clothing. But come springtime, don’t rush to shed the cotton layers; keeping warm for a while helps the body slowly adapt and yields countless benefits.

The five chicks that had hatched earlier had already grown bigger, their chirping becoming stronger, while the goose eggs under the hen’s belly finally showed signs of movement.

One by one, the goslings began breaking out of their shells—tiny, soft, yellow fluff covering their bodies, with flat little beaks. Their newly hatched legs were still a bit weak, wobbling as they attempted a few steps before plopping down. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

The mother hen had completed its task and was rewarded generously with a hearty serving of premium feed by Lady Zhang before being sent back to its coop. The chicks and goslings, however, remained inside the house.

The goslings grew quickly, and by the second day after hatching, their legs were noticeably sturdier.

After lunch, Lady Zhang let the goslings roam freely on the kang, leaving them to scuttle about on their own. They stuck to the far end of the kang, never venturing toward the head of the kang.

With Xiao Qi resting at home, he, naturally, wanted to play with the goslings.

The goslings, being larger, fluffier, and chubbier than the chicks, were even more adorable. Not only Xiao Qi was taken with them; even Lian Manman loved them. However, goslings weren’t as gently tempered as chicks.

Sure enough, as Xiao Qi reached out to touch one gosling, two others quickly lunged at him.

The goslings’ attack was quite amusing: they lowered their bodies, stretched their necks, stuck out their plump little tails, and pecked at him. In Thirty Mile Camp, this pecking was referred to as "twisting." Because goslings didn’t have teeth, when they caught hold of someone, their actions resembled a twisting motion. One could only imagine how much it would hurt if a full-grown goose twisted someone.

The sight made Lian Manman think of crocodiles—apparently, crocodiles use spinning motions to swallow their prey.

Though Xiao Qi had nothing to fear from such tiny goslings, he still shrieked and scampered away.

Lian Manman, Lady Zhang, and Lian Zhizhi sat watching, unbothered; the goslings didn’t pursue them, only Xiao Qi.

Xiao Qi ran in circles, but the goslings relentlessly chased him. With no alternative, he leaped onto a pillow.

The goslings, still quite small, found the pillow too high to reach. They issued a few threatening honks at its base before retreating back to the far end of the kang. Xiao Qi wiped sweat from his brow and climbed down from the pillow, swearing off teasing the goslings ever again.

Lian Manman giggled from the side; goslings were unmistakably bold. Judging by their current size and fearless nature in challenging plump Xiao Qi, their audacity was clear.

Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi didn’t sympathize with Xiao Qi, laughing so hard they nearly doubled over.

Just as the laughter rose, a voice rang out from the courtyard.

"Fourth Aunt! My Fifth Brother is back!"

The voice belonged to Lian Yeye, filled with joy.
