Lian Manman found it a bit strange, so she quickened her pace, lifted the curtain, and stepped into the east room.

Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi were sitting on the kang, and between the two of them, there were a few fluffy little yellow bundles slowly squirming.

"Ah! The chicks have hatched!" Lian Manman immediately exclaimed with joy.

She hurried to the edge of the kang, leaning over to take a closer look.

Five fluffy little chicks, each no bigger than her fist, huddled in the sunny patch on the kang, their tender yellow beaks letting out soft cheeping sounds.

"The chicks have hatched, what about the goslings?" Lian Manman asked as she glanced toward the far end of the kang.

In the shadow near the wooden barrier, the feathered mother hen was still dutifully perched in the nest. Until all the eggs in the nest were hatched, the devoted hen would not leave.

"The goose eggs will take a few more days," Lady Zhang told Lian Manman.

Chicken eggs usually take about twenty-one days to hatch. Duck eggs generally take around twenty-eight days, while goose eggs need the longest incubation time, about thirty days.

Today marked the twenty-first day, and five chicks had already hatched one after another.

Lian Manman climbed onto the kang as well and carefully cupped a chick in her palm. Its feathers were soft, and its little body radiated warmth. Not daring to use too much force, she gently placed the chick back down.

Last year, the chicks they bought from the market were slightly larger than these. Newly hatched chicks were still very fragile. Typically, chicks sold at the market had been raised at home for about ten days first. These first ten days were also when chicks were most prone to dying.

"Will these little ones survive?" Lian Manman murmured to herself.

"They should. They’re all quite sturdy," Lady Zhang said as she got off the kang, grabbed a basket, lined it with dry grass and cotton, and placed the chicks gently inside.

Newly hatched chicks were not good at adapting and couldn’t withstand the cold weather outside. They needed to stay indoors, receiving meticulous care to get through their earliest days.

At noon, Xiao Qi came back from the private school and, upon hearing about the hatched chicks, rushed over to see them as soon as he set his rice bowl down.

As Xiao Qi dashed into the room, a meow unexpectedly sounded from his arms. The plump Da Hua leapt out from his hold, landing silently on her four paws without making a sound.

The chicks in the basket immediately huddled together, chirping noisily, while the brooding hen raised its head and began clucking loudly.

Xiao Qi had brought Da Hua along.

Da Hua, even more eager than Xiao Qi, had darted to the basket in the blink of an eye. One fluffy paw rested on the edge of the basket as it dipped its furry head downward to peek inside.

The chick and hen cries intensified. The brooding hen stretched its neck and even stood up in its nest.

Lian Manman quickly scooped Da Hua up into her arms. One of Da Hua’s paws, however, was still hooked onto the basket, refusing to let go. Lian Manman had to firmly pry it off herself.

"Xiao Qi, why did you bring her here?" Lian Manman said to him before turning her attention to Da Hua, poking her head as she scolded her.

"Da Hua, what do you think you’re doing? You greedy cat! Aren’t the shrimp skins you eat enough for you? Look at your belly, it’s already round. With so many fat mice out there, you can catch as many as you want. Those are our family’s chickens. If you dare touch them, I’ll chop off your paw!"

Lian Manman scolded Da Hua fiercely. Da Hua darted a glance toward the basket but was promptly smacked back by Lian Manman. On Da Hua’s feline face was the most innocent and pure expression, and it even let out a soft "meow" of protest.

The meow only added to its air of innocence.

"Don’t play innocent with me. I know exactly what you’re up to. Da Hua, mark my words—you’re not allowed to go near our family’s chickens. If you dare, no more shrimp skins for you!" Manman continued lecturing Da Hua.

"Meow," Da Hua cried again pitifully before curling up on Manman’s lap, licking its paw, as if it had completely lost interest in the chicks.

Meanwhile, Xiao Qi was sprawled by the basket, using his chubby little hands to pet each and every one of the chicks.

After stroking all the chicks, Xiao Qi still wasn’t satisfied.

"When will the goslings hatch?" Xiao Qi asked, looking at the hen’s nest while his wide eyes blinked with anticipation.

"What’s the rush? They’ll hatch in a few days," Lady Zhang said as she walked into the room, smiling. "But goslings aren’t as well-behaved as chicks. You’ll see for yourself when the time comes."
