Chapter 1504: Chapter 765: The Wedding Procession (Part 2)

The days flew by in busy preparation; the Wu Family sent over the formal betrothal gifts, making Lian Manman’s home bustling for a day. Soon, it was the twenty-seventh of the winter month—the day when the Lian Family would send furniture and set up the bridal chamber at the Wu Family residence.

As the brothers of the bride, Wu Lang and Xiao Qi were both dressed impeccably, each riding a red-adorned blue mule, leading the procession. Behind them were several open wagons, packed full with pieces of furniture accompanying Lian Zhizhi as part of her dowry. Each carriage was decorated with large red silk ribbons, exuding joyous festivity.

There were also two covered carriages carrying female elders of the bride’s family, responsible for setting up the new room.

Zhang Qingshan’s family arrived early in the morning, having hired someone to watch their home, all family members attended. Lady Zhang Wang and Lady Hu Wang wore brand new clothes and sat in the front carriage. They were the primary individuals responsible for setting up Lian Zhizhi’s bridal room.

Apart from these two aunts, the Lian Family also invited Chunzhu’s Wife, Old Huang’s wife, and several other women, who were on good terms with the Lian Family and known for having intact families with both parents alive and children.

Due to adherence to customs, Lian Manman, although eager to go, had to stay behind in the end. Fortunately, the Thirty Mile Camp and the town are quite close, making it easy for Xiao Hetao to pass messages back and forth.

Come evening, after everyone had eaten and was about to rest, Lady Zhang went to the west room. It was Lian Zhizhi’s last night before the wedding; this night, Lady Zhang would accompany her, imparting wisdom on how to be a wife and daughter-in-law.

Previously, Lian Manman and Zhang Caiyun shared a room with Lian Zhizhi. On this night, Lady Li had them sleep with her outside. The two young girls, fully aware, giggled as they insisted on squeezing into the inner room with Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi. Lian Zhizhi was terribly embarrassed, and Lady Zhang, unable to handle them, eventually had to shoo them out with a playful scolding as the hour grew late.

Once in bed, Zhang Caiyun and Lian Manman didn’t fall asleep immediately. With Lian Zhizhi about to be married the next day, they too were too excited to sleep. In the other room, Lady Zhang spoke softly with Lian Zhizhi, but Lian Manman and Zhang Caiyun couldn’t make out the words, nor hear Lian Zhizhi’s voice.

Zhang Caiyun, although hearing nothing, still giggled under the covers and poked Lian Manman when she didn’t laugh.

Lian Manman didn’t laugh; she felt like sighing but knew there was no reason to. Lian Zhizhi’s marriage was a perfectly matched and auspicious one. Lian Manman was happy for her but still reluctant.

Reluctant for Lian Zhizhi to get married.

But, no matter how reluctant, one must eventually part. Time flows like water, stopping for no one. Young girls and boys will eventually grow up, just like a nest of young swallows under the eaves in early summer, snuggling together as if time was everlasting. But once they grow up, they must leave.

Lian Manman didn’t voice her sigh; Zhang Caiyun continued to giggle to herself. Only Lady Li, sleeping nearby, seemed to sense Lian Manman’s emotions. Lady Li reached out and gently patted Lian Manman’s back.

"You’re reluctant about your sister’s marriage, right? This day comes for everyone, it’s a good thing," Lady Li whispered. "Everyone goes through this, generation after generation... Your sister is marrying nearby, so although it won’t be quite the same as before, it’s still close enough that you can visit whenever you want. Sisters can still keep each other in mind despite the distance. When your sister gives you a little nephew, you’ll be thrilled..."

Lian Manman’s slight reluctance and sorrow were dispelled by Lady Li’s words, and she couldn’t help but smile. Lady Li’s words and rhythmic patting seemed to have a soothing effect, and Lian Manman soon fell asleep.

The next day, the whole family was up early. Lian Manman got ready, ate a little something, and joined Zhang Caiyun and Lian Yeye in accompanying Lian Zhizhi. When the bridal carriage arrived, and the music urging makeup sounded repeatedly, Lian Zhizhi cried, and Lady Zhang cried and laughed simultaneously.

Lian Manman, Zhang Caiyun, and Lian Yeye also shed tears alongside them.

The overwhelming joy eventually eclipsed the sorrow of parting. Lian Zhizhi boarded the bridal sedan sent by the Wu Family. The groom, Wu Jiaxing, rode a blue mule at the front, followed by Wu Lang and Xiao Qi on their blue mules. Behind them were four large carriages loaded with the fine dowry, accompanied by musicians playing festive tunes. The procession set off from Lian Family’s door, passed by the Imperially Bestowed Archway, turned onto the official road, and headed straight for Qingyang Town.

As the procession took off, behind them, Lian Shouxin, Lady Zhang, Lian Manman, and the Zhang Family members, along with various friends and relatives, boarded carriages headed for Qingyang Town.

At the entrance of the Wu Family, red decorations and festive crafts were already in place. Spectators crowded around to watch. As the bride’s procession appeared at the end of the street, firecrackers began to crackle.

On this day, as new relatives, there wasn’t much for Lian Manman’s family to handle. After Lian Zhizhi and Wu Jiaxing completed the ceremonial bowing to the heavens and earth in the main hall, Lian Manman, Zhang Caiyun, and Lian Yeye rushed into the bridal chamber.

According to the customs of farmer households, the wedding ceremony takes place in the morning, and the wedding feast is held at noon. The main table of the feast is in the main hall, occupied by the closest relatives of the bride and groom. Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang took seats at this table. Since the Lian Family doesn’t have many relatives, and Old Master Lian couldn’t attend due to illness, while Lady Zhou never attends feasts, they discussed it and invited Zhang Qingshan, Lady Li, and Lian Shouli to join this table.
