Chapter 1296: Chapter 661: A Chance Encounter (Part 2)

This really is something Lady Zhou would do. Lian Manman exchanged a glance with Lian Zhizhi, and both sisters gave a wry smile.

"Xiao Qing, how did you respond?" Lian Manman asked again.

"Maid just said, I’m just here to work, how would I know so much about the master’s affairs. Maid also said, Miss Caiyun’s family’s conditions are not bad either, so for such a big matter as an engagement, Miss Caiyun’s family would consider it important too." Xiao Qing replied.

"Well said." Lian Manman nodded. The reason for sending Xiao Qing to the old house with food was because she was good with words.

With Xiao Qing sent out, Lian Zhizhi and Lian Manman began to talk in low voices.

"It’s been years since we’ve been apart, she knows she can’t control our affairs, but still always wants to find out about everything, guessing that we have money but won’t spend it on her, instead giving it to our maternal grandmother’s family," Lian Manman said to Lian Zhizhi.

"She just thinks our mom is siding with her own family," Lian Zhizhi nodded in agreement.

"Just wait, even with Xiao Qing saying that, she will surely still assume and start scolding again," Lian Manman added.

"Let her scold, we can’t hear her anyway." Lian Zhizhi smiled.

Lian Manman guessed correctly. In the following days, Lady Zhou took the opportunity to rant several times at the old house. Although ostensibly directed at a few people in the old house, everyone knew she was actually scolding Lian Shouxin and Lady Zhang. Soon it was heard that Lian Shouyi and Lady He were complaining to Lady Zhou and Old Master Lian that Lian Shouxin was focused on outsiders, arranging a good match for his niece, but neglecting his own niece.

As for the neighbors, they all knew how Old Master Lian, especially Lady Zhou, treated Lian Shouxin’s family, and how Lian Shouxin’s family honored Old Master Lian and Lady Zhou in every way. Therefore, when they discussed this matter, they were all biased, praising Lady Zhang for being virtuous and calling Lady Zhou ungrateful and overbearing.

Lian Manman’s family pretended not to know anything, and were quite happy for several days because of Zhang Caiyun’s engagement.

...

In Lian Manman’s anticipation, the custom-made hanging oven was finally completed and delivered. After setting up the oven, the next step was to test it by roasting ducks.

Lian Manman checked the various seasonings at home and found that two of them were in short supply, so she discussed with Lady Zhang, planning to go to the town to buy some.

Qingyang Town has grocery stores, and on market days, there are vendors specifically selling various seasonings, so daily household spices can be bought there without needing to go to the county town.

"Tomorrow is market day, and I happened to order firewood made from jujube wood. I’ll go pick it up tomorrow and bring back anything we lack." Lian Shouxin said upon hearing this.

"Dad, tomorrow is market day, so I want to take a look." Lian Manman said.

These days have been busy, and Lian Manman hadn’t visited the big market in Qingyang Town for a long time.

"You can go to the county town whenever you want, and you still fancy the market in our town?" Lady Zhang laughed.

"Why not fancy it, our town’s market day is not inferior to any other place." Lian Manman laughed.

Lian Manman liked the bustling county town, but still enjoyed the lively and familiar market days in the town.

"Alright, then go take a look." Lady Zhang nodded and agreed.

The next day, after having breakfast, Lian Manman did some needlework at home for a while before taking Xiao Xi and Xiao Qing with her and riding to the town. Lian Shouxin also came with people and a cart. The routine of going to market is such that sellers go early to secure a good spot and start trading early, while buyers do not need to rush and can wait till the market gets busier, by which time all the vendors are already there.

Upon reaching the market, Lian Manman got off the carriage, accompanied by Xiao Xi and Xiao Qing, and with Lian Shouxin leading the family along on a leisurely stroll. Xiao Xi and Xiao Qing, who would not be able to go out freely unless accompanying Lian Manman, were delighted by the lively market scene.

Lian Manman selectively bought some items, and finally arrived at a stall selling seasonings, where she picked out several spices. After that, the group left the market, heading east, where there was an alley leading directly to a riverside, a place dedicated to selling timber on market days.

"The timber I ordered is from that family." Walking into the alley, Lian Shouxin pointed ahead and said.

Lian Manman looked in the direction Lian Shouxin pointed, and both father and daughter were at a momentary loss. Not far ahead, Old Master Lian was standing in front of a pile of timber, talking to the stall owner.

"Why did Grandpa come to the market alone?" Lian Manman almost muttered to herself.

Upon seeing Old Master Lian, Lian Shouxin and Lian Manman hurried over to greet him.

"Dad, why have you come? Are you feeling well?" Lian Shouxin asked with concern.

"Grandpa, why did you come alone? Didn’t you bring anyone?" Lian Manman also asked.

"I’m still strong and healthy, nothing much to do, just came out to have a look around and ended up here. I didn’t intend to come to the market, so I didn’t have them follow me." Old Master Lian turned his head and replied kindly, answering both Lian Shouxin and Lian Manman’s questions.

"Old Fourth, Manman, what are you here for?" Old Master Lian asked again.

"Dad, we came to buy some firewood." Lian Shouxin honestly replied, then asked, "Dad, is there something you wanted to buy? What do you need?"

"Nothing really, nothing planned." Old Master Lian waved his hand.

"Old Master, you have an eye for quality. My timber here is among the best at this market. Don’t think it’s pricey, seeing you’re sincere about buying, I didn’t quote a false price." The stall owner glanced between Old Master Lian and Lian Shouxin and spoke up.

A "false price" is a local Thirty Mile Camp dialect meaning an inflated price.

"Dad, are you here to buy timber?" Lian Shouxin detected some meaning and asked.
