Xiao Qi noticed Shen Qian agree so readily to stay for dinner, a fleeting hint of surprise crossed his face but quickly vanished.
"Brother Xiao Jiu, let’s go now," Xiao Qi stood up and said.
Rather than Shen Qian wanting to see the threshing floor piled with wheat, it’s more accurate to say Xiao Qi is eager to see it. We’ve been in Nian Garden for lessons all day and didn’t participate firsthand in the wheat harvest, which was quite a regret for Xiao Qi.
"Manman, come along," Shen Qian drank his sour plum soup, seemed in no hurry, and wanted to invite Lian Manman.
Lian Manman had already visited the threshing floor countless times today, and at this moment, she really didn’t want to go again.
"You and Xiao Qi go enjoy yourselves," Lian Manman said, "Be careful, look around and come back. I’ll help my mom with dinner. Brother Xiao Jiu, what would you like to eat?"
"Anything is fine, whatever you cook must be delicious," Shen Qian said with a smile.
"Brother Xiao Jiu." Xiao Qi urged Shen Qian again.
Only then did Shen Qian get up and go out with Xiao Qi. Lian Shouxin, knowing Shen Qian was here, hurriedly gathered people and carefully accompanied Shen Qian to the threshing floor.
Lian Manman discussed dinner plans with Lady Zhang and Lian Zhizhi.
"Ninth Master is here, the meal must be sumptuous. How about making a hot pot?" Lady Zhang suggested.
In midsummer, hotpot isn’t quite suitable; just thinking about having a fiery red charcoal stove on the table feels hot.
"Mom, let’s not make hot pot; it’s too hot. Let’s make more light dishes," Lian Manman suggested.
"That’s fine too," Lady Zhang nodded.
The three of them discussed for a while, decided on the dinner menu, and Lian Zhizhi continued doing needlework in the backyard, while Lady Zhang and Lian Manman went to the front yard. The two of them personally cooked and, together with Han Zhong’s wife, made a lavish meal.
Lian Manman only made two light dishes before coming out of the kitchen. In the courtyard, she heard Da Pang and Second Fatty’s joyful barking from the main yard. Lian Manman spoke a few words to Lady Zhang, then walked through the Moon Gate back to the main yard.
"Sis/Manman," Shen Qian and Xiao Qi were teasing Da Pang and Second Fatty at the study door, who were circling around them. Seeing Lian Manman arrive, they smiled and greeted her.
"Back already?" Lian Manman asked with a smile.
Seeing Lian Manman, Da Pang and Second Fatty abandoned Xiao Qi and Shen Qian and ran over, wagging their tails, circling her and raising their heads for pats.
Lian Manman reached out and rubbed Da Pang and Second Fatty’s heads. The two wolfdogs were fully grown, almost half a person’s height, their diets were good, not only robust in stature but their heads were like little piglets, and their coats were sleek and glossy like fine silk.
"Sis, Brother Xiao Jiu said he has hunting mastiffs at home, if we like, he’ll give us two when they have puppies," Xiao Qi said to Lian Manman.
"Really?" Lian Manman smiled at Shen Qian.
With the sunset behind her, Lian Manman stood against the light, while Shen Qian faced her, squinting slightly in the sun.
"Of course it’s true, Manman, if you like, I’ll pick the best for you," Shen Qian said with a smiling face.
"Your family has hunting mastiffs; what do we need them for? Using them as guard dogs is too underutilized. Ones like Da Pang and Second Fatty are just perfect," Lian Manman laughed while fiercely rubbing Da Pang and Second Fatty’s chubby heads again.
The two fat dogs grinned, tongues out, seemingly very happy.
"Don’t stand here; the sun is scorching, let’s sit inside," Lian Manman noticed the rosy cheeks of Xiao Qi and Shen Qian and suggested.
The three of them entered the study together, Xiao Xi and Xiao Qing busily carried in iced sour plum soup and a plate of fresh fruits.
"Want to do homework, it’ll be a while before dinner," Lian Manman said to Shen Qian and Xiao Qi.
"Sis, let me rest for a bit. My homework isn’t much today; after dinner, there’s still time to do it," Xiao Qi said.
Lian Manman looked at Shen Qian, knowing he had lots of homework.
"It’s okay, I can do it in Nian Garden later; plenty of time," Shen Qian said, "Manman, let’s play chess."
"What chess?" Lian Manman smiled.
"Go, Sis Fifth said you’re good at Go, told me to learn from you," Shen Qian promptly replied, his fox-like eyes sparkling, "Manman, you wouldn’t mind teaching me, right?"
"Do you need me to teach?" Lian Manman laughed.
In music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, music might be a minor aspect, but the other three, Shen Qian should have learned from a young age. It’s certain that Shen Jin’s education in these areas is exemplary, not to mention Shen Qian.
