Chapter 574: Do you know anyone from George’s family?

Ever since the news of George’s case being reopened had reached Hugo, he had been trying to find out who was behind it.

Someone from George’s side had clearly stepped forward, determined to fight the case again after all these years. The thought alone had left Hugo with more questions than answers.

What puzzled him the most was the fact that he knew almost nothing about George’s family.

Apart from George’s wife, Hugo had never met or even heard about anyone else connected to him. At the time, it had never seemed important. But now, the sudden appearance of someone willing to reopen the case made him wonder who exactly had taken that step.

Who was trying to clear George’s name now?

Hugo leaned back in his chair, his mind drifting toward the past.

Back then, when George had been arrested and detained after being accused of kidnapping Kathrine, Hugo had barely paid attention to the legal proceedings.

At the time, the entire situation had shaken him deeply.

His only concern had been Kathrine.

The trauma she suffered during those days had left a deep scar on her. She had been emotionally shattered after being held captive, and Hugo had focused all his attention on helping his daughter recover from that nightmare.

Every moment of his time had been devoted to making sure she felt safe again.

Because of that, the court proceedings had become secondary in his mind.

He had trusted the legal system to do its job.

Or perhaps, he had simply chosen not to look too closely.

But now, when he thought about those days again, something felt strange.

His brows slowly drew together.

While he had been mostly absent during the court process, there had been someone else who handled everything related to the case.

Roseline.

She had taken responsibility for dealing with the lawyers, the evidence, and the proceedings. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

At the time, Hugo had not questioned it.

In fact, he had been grateful.

Roseline had assured him that everything was being handled properly. She had told him that George would face the consequences for what he had done.

Hugo had trusted her words without hesitation.

But now, years later, the memory did not sit well with him.

A faint unease crept into his thoughts.

If someone from George’s side had suddenly decided to reopen the case, it meant that the story might not have been as simple as Hugo had believed.

He slowly exhaled, staring at the papers lying on his desk.

For the first time in years, Hugo began wondering if he had overlooked something important.

Back then, he had been too consumed by his daughter’s pain to question anything else.

But now he could not ignore the possibility that while he had stayed away from the courtroom, Roseline had been the one controlling everything behind the scenes.

Hugo suddenly rose from his chair, the uneasiness in his chest refusing to settle. The thought that had been troubling him would not leave his mind, and the more he tried to ignore it, the stronger it became.

Without wasting another moment, he walked out of his study and headed toward Roseline’s room.

When he reached the doorway, he found her sitting on the couch, focused on her phone. The soft glow from the screen reflected on her face as her fingers moved quickly across it.

Hugo stepped inside.

Roseline looked up at the sound of his footsteps, but before she could say anything, Hugo stopped directly in front of her.

"Do you know anyone from George’s family?" he asked.

The question caught Roseline completely off guard.

"What?" she blurted out, clearly startled.

Hugo paused for a moment before speaking again, his voice calmer this time.

"I mean, it’s obvious that someone from his family has reopened the case," he said. "And I intend to meet them."

He kept his eyes fixed on her as he continued.

"But the problem is that I don’t know anyone from George’s side. Which is why I asked you. You were the one handling the court matters back then."

Hugo did not know why he felt the need to explain himself so much. Roseline had been there throughout the entire process. She knew exactly what he was referring to.

Yet something inside him wanted to see how she would react.

He wanted to test something.

Roseline’s fingers tightened slightly around her phone.

"I... I happened to meet his wife," she said after a brief hesitation. "You know her as well."

Her voice was steady, but her heart was beating rapidly inside her chest.

"But apart from that," she continued quickly, "I didn’t meet anyone else."

Roseline forced herself to remain calm, though the tension inside her was growing.

Her eyes lifted slowly to meet Hugo’s.

His gaze was sharp and observant, as though he were carefully studying every detail of her expression.

The way he was looking at her made her pulse quicken.

Roseline had not expected Hugo to suddenly question her about George’s family.

Not like this.

For years the matter had remained buried in the past, something neither of them had spoken about again.

But now that the case had been reopened, it seemed the past was beginning to surface once more.

And with it came questions she had hoped would never be asked again.

"But from what I remember, his sister came to meet me once," Hugo said slowly. "If I recall correctly, you were the one who brought her to see me."

His eyes sharpened as he finished speaking.

Roseline’s expression immediately paled.

For a brief second, she forgot how to respond.

The memory rushed back to her with startling clarity.

She had almost convinced herself that Hugo had forgotten about that meeting. After all, it had been years, and back then he had been far more concerned about Kathrine’s condition than anything else.

But clearly, he had not forgotten.

’She did come to meet him before she left the country,’ Roseline thought, her heartbeat quickening.
