Rebirth: The Journey of an Heiress-Chapter 887: Modified - 884: Assistance
Chapter 887: Modified: Chapter 884: Assistance
Having served the Crown Prince since he was young, even when the Crown Prince was the unpopular King of Qi, he was still the most favored eunuch by the prince. Aside from his master... rarely did anyone make Quan Yu abandon his dignity to kneel and plead.
Later, when the King of Qi was enthroned as the Crown Prince, Quan Yu’s status also rose significantly. Many courted his favor, yet even towards his master... he never again bent the knee to anyone.
This was the first time in many years that Quan Yu had discarded his dignity to kneel and plead to a guard.
The guard of the Bai family felt compassion upon seeing Quan Yu like this. He had seen Quan Yu many times, and whether towards the Eldest Young Lady or the Fourth Young Lady, Quan Yu’s care and concern were genuine, unlike other servants who were slavish. He remembered when the Eldest Young Lady was injured, Quan Yu was even more worried than the Crown Prince.
Having heard there was a commotion outside, Bai Jinse came to see who dared to make trouble, only to find the eunuch Quan Yu from the Crown Prince’s side.
The guards from the Bai family in Shuoyang, who were guarding the Bai Mansion’s entrance, were about to salute when Bai Jinse raised her hand to stop them.
She heard a Bai family guard persuading Quan Yu to leave, explaining that their Eldest Young Lady was truly too busy to see him, as she had not even had a moment to rest since her return, and that the guards were genuinely unwilling to disturb her.
Bai Jinse turned and whispered an instruction, "Be courteous to the eunuch, persuade him to leave, but do not use force."
The guard captain of the Bai family troops in Shuoyang cupped his fists and acknowledged her command.
After casting a deep glance at Quan Yu, who was still kneeling and tearfully pleading outside the Bai Mansion’s gate, Bai Jinse turned and re-entered the mansion.
Quan Yu was the most favored eunuch by the Crown Prince of the Jin Dynasty. By logic, with the change of dynasties, such a eunuch should not be retained. However, Quan Yu had not harmed the Bai family while serving the deposed Crown Prince. Instead, he had aided the Eldest Young Lady.
Yet, Quan Yu’s position was awkward. He firmly believed that the Eldest Young Lady aimed for the throne only after thinking the Crown Prince had died. Even if he truly saw the Eldest Young Lady, the answer he obtained would differ from his beliefs. So why bother?
Bai Jinse carried a small silver cup of koumiss, lifted the curtain, and entered the upper room of the Qinghui Courtyard. She saw Nanny Jiang kneeling beside several baskets of memorials, crying to Bai Qingyan. Placing the koumiss and the small silver spoon by Bai Qingyan’s hand, she quietly retreated to the side.
Nanny Jiang’s voice was choked with sobs as she spoke. Bai Qingyan beckoned Zhenming and Zhenguang several times to help Nanny Jiang up, but Nanny Jiang remained kneeling.
Kneeling forward, she looked at Bai Qingyan and said slowly and sorrowfully, "Eldest Miss, the Eldest Princess’s intentions are earnest. She begs you not to blame her. She is not only your grandmother but also the Eldest Princess of Jin Kingdom. The Eldest Princess was cherished and raised with great care, and how could she disregard the empire her father entrusted her to protect? Please, Eldest Miss, do not blame the Eldest Princess!"
"If Nanny insists on kneeling, does she expect me to accompany her in kneeling?" Bai Qingyan set down her pen and looked at Nanny Jiang.
Bai Jinse stepped forward to personally help Nanny Jiang up. "Nanny... please rise! If you continue kneeling like this, the Eldest Young Lady will indeed kneel with you..."
Upon hearing Bai Jinse’s words, Nanny Jiang, with tears in her eyes, finally stood up with Zhenming’s help while gazing sorrowfully at Bai Qingyan, "Eldest Miss..."
"Nanny, I understand why Grandmother went with King Liang. Whether she hoped to secure the Lin family’s reign with her own efforts or to teach me a lesson about holding imperial power, I will save Grandmother because she is my grandmother," Bai Qingyan said gently to Nanny Jiang. "Besides, King Liang will not harm Grandmother, as he still wishes to use her to threaten me. So rest assured, Nanny Jiang."
Nanny Jiang nodded. Seeing the dark circles under Bai Qingyan’s eyes, she couldn’t help but worry about her health. She clutched her clothing and quietly asked, "When the Eldest Young Lady marched against Daliang, the Imperial Physician sent word that your health wasn’t good. Has it improved now?"
Nanny Jiang remembered the time of the great mourning in the Bai family. She was preoccupied with convincing Bai Qingyan to spare the illegitimate child of the second master, and with lamenting the hardships of the Eldest Princess, having failed to consider the injuries Bai Qingyan sustained from the official’s staff at the Drum Tower as Bai Jinxiu spoke.
Nanny Jiang recalled watching Bai Qingyan grow from a little girl. Bai Qingyan had always been one who would endure pain without complaint. Her mind was too occupied with worries at the time. Seeing Bai Qingyan silent, she assumed Bai Qingyan was invincible.
"Nanny, don’t worry. Doctor Hong has been accompanying me," Bai Qingyan quietly reassured Nanny Jiang, "Go rest. When Grandmother returns, she will need your care, so please take care of yourself."
With tearful eyes, Nanny Jiang gazed at Bai Qingyan and nodded. "Eldest Miss, you should also rest early!"
After Nanny Jiang left, Bai Jinse replaced the previous lamp with a brighter one for Bai Qingyan.
With an additional lamp, the area around the small bedchamber table was brightly lit.
Bai Qingyan dipped her brush in cinnabar and made notes on a memorial. When she looked up, she saw Bai Jinse standing on tiptoe by the tall agarwood carved screen, using a silver needle to adjust the candle wick.
"Has your second sister sent any messages?" Bai Qingyan asked Bai Jinse, massaging her brow.
Bai Jinse shook her head before consoling Bai Qingyan, "Eldest Young Lady, worry not. As you told Nanny Jiang, King Liang will not harm Grandmother, as he needs her to threaten you."
Seeing Bai Qingyan nod, Bai Jinse sat beside her, "Eldest Young Lady, let the officials rest for a day tomorrow, and take a break yourself."
"After I finish reading these memorials..." Bai Qingyan glanced at Bai Jinse’s bandaged hands, then gently touched her head. "Go rest."
Knowing her sister would insist on her health, Bai Jinse continued organizing the already noted memorials. She mentioned, "The deposed Crown Prince’s favored eunuch, Quan Yu, came to our gate earlier, clamoring to see you. I checked, and our guards were persuading him to leave."
Bai Qingyan paused, remembering Quan Yu’s discreet help during the military grain case investigated by Xiao Si. Even Xiao Si mistook Quan Yu as her secret agent.
Without looking up, she continued making notes in cinnabar, her tone calm. "Tell Zhenming to see if Quan Yu is still at the gate. If he is, bring him in."
Bai Jinse nodded and went outside to instruct Zhenming, stationed outside the courtyard.
Soon, Zhenming led Quan Yu through the main gate of the Qinghui Courtyard.
