Chapter 308: Chapter 307: Rescue

They arrived in ten seconds, moving swiftly, but they were here for a kidnapping, not to do anything conspicuous. They didn’t shout or draw weapons, but just searched.

Gu Xiaoqing heard footsteps approaching and then moving away. She huddled closer to the tire, trying to curl her body into a ball. She understood they were sweeping the parking lot, trying to find her among the scattered cars.

"I can’t believe she managed to slip away?"

A voice said angrily.

"We underestimated her, focusing too much on the bodyguards and those police officers, rather than paying enough attention to the girl." Another voice answered deeply.

Gu Xiaoqing was certain these were the two people she had just seen through the dressing mirror.

The subsequent voices became muffled and unclear, making Gu Xiaoqing feel that the other party was in another direction, keeping her from daring to move.

"Would such efforts go to waste? We can’t get another chance like this. You should know there are quite a few people around this little lady. If we hadn’t broken their guard, this chance wouldn’t have been easy." The voice became more muffled, and Gu Xiaoqing had to listen intently to hear it.

The remaining answers were no longer audible.

The sound of footsteps also gradually became distant and inaudible.

But Gu Xiaoqing dared not move recklessly, nor easily crawl out from under the car, fearing it was a ruse.

Not far away, a car engine started, the sound seemed to fade, but Gu Xiaoqing still dared not move. She guessed those people had left, but it could also be a trick.

The thigh in jeans was starting to go numb. It’s not yet spring, and even though there’s a hint of spring in the air, the ground temperature is still shockingly cold.

The cold was gradually seeping into the sweater under the trench coat and the clothes inside the jeans. Even curled up motionless, she felt freezing to death.

Gu Xiaoqing could only pray that Fang Shaohan would arrive quickly.

As the adrenaline gradually faded, Gu Xiaoqing began to feel a drowsy fatigue, her eyelids growing heavy, almost as if wanting to fall asleep.

But a sharp screech of brakes in the parking lot quickly brought Gu Xiaoqing back to full alertness.

A voice called out.

"Are you there?"

Upon hearing this voice, Gu Xiaoqing believed she was teary-eyed, finally hearing a familiar voice. Gu Xiaoqing silently crawled out from under the car and slowly stood up.

About ten meters away, Fang Shaohan was anxiously scanning the surroundings, his body poised between the car door and the vehicle as if ready to leave at any moment.

"I’m here!"

Fang Shaohan shut the car door with a snap, and the car sped over to Gu Xiaoqing, the door opening.

"Get in!"

Gu Xiaoqing climbed in.

The door shut with a slam.

"Lie on the floor."

Fang Shaohan ordered, even putting his hand on the back of Gu Xiaoqing’s head, pushing down forcefully so she had to obey.

She crouched on the floor of the car’s front seat, her entire body wedged between the dashboard and the seat. Fang Shaohan started the car.

He glanced at her, gave a slight smile, then shifted the car into gear. He pressed the accelerator, and the car lunged forward silently.

The first shot pierced the car window above her head, scattering glass inside the car. She stifled a scream, raising her arms to protect her head. The second shot penetrated the front car door and the seat in front of Fang Shaohan, coming within ten centimeters of his arm.

He floored the accelerator, smoothly shifting gears to speed up. "Get down," he said, narrowly dodging a third bullet that shattered the driver’s side window.

Amidst the sound of shattering glass and metal collisions, Gu Xiaoqing hugged herself tightly. She wasn’t prepared for impact but was flung to the side among the screaming metal, breaking glass, and continuous firing of automatic weapons, her head striking the car door.

"Are you alright?"

Fang Shaohan shouted while shifting gears to reverse.

"I’m fine!"

Gu Xiaoqing yelled back, unsure if she could be heard over the chaotic gunfire.

She couldn’t help at all now, only hoping not to be a burden to Fang Shaohan.

He shifted gears again, and the car surged forward as he concentrated fully on driving.

The car wasn’t driving as smoothly as before; it jerked and stalled. The engine was evidently hit by a bullet, but at least they were out of the parking lot.

They rounded a bend, a cluster of tall buildings blocking the mall from view. He drove the car off the road.

Had they finally escaped?

Carefully, she climbed up from the floor. Shattered glass covered her hair, shoulders, and seat. It was dark in the woods. The car door on her side wouldn’t open, probably due to a bullet hitting the lock.

The sound of sirens approached, with many police cars arriving, and gunfire occasionally heard from behind. Gu Xiaoqing continuously saw police cars flashing by in front of her.

Finally, she could feel relieved, knowing at least it was safe now.

Fang Shaohan got out of the car, reached in, and helped her out, placing her on the ground.

"Shake it off," he instructed.

They bent over, shaking off the glass fragments stuck in their hair and on their bodies. Her arms and shoulders stung a little, but after careful checking, she confirmed there was no bleeding. Surviving unharmed was already remarkable; not being cut by glass was a miracle.

Once everything quieted down, she noticed half of Fang Shaohan’s face was covered in blood.

Her heart sank.

"You’ve been shot," she said, trying to maintain a calm tone.

He couldn’t be shot. Somehow, his safety was extremely important to her.

"Not shot, just cut by glass," he replied, sounding quite irritated. He took out a handkerchief and pressed it to his forehead.

A police car stopped in front of them, and after checking Fang Shaohan’s credentials, an ambulance was arranged with medical personnel to examine and bandage them.

When the doctor came to check, Gu Xiaoqing pointed at Fang Shaohan and said, "I’m not hurt, but his head is wounded."

The doctor glanced at Gu Xiaoqing and indeed saw no signs of bleeding, turning to bandage Fang Shaohan’s wound.

Soon, both of them saw the police far off escorting five people into police cars, with another person being loaded into an ambulance.

Fang Shaohan held Gu Xiaoqing’s shoulders, calmly comforting her, "It’s all over, you can feel at ease now."

His arm tightened around Gu Xiaoqing’s shoulder, the strength seemingly boundless, causing her pain.

"I’m sorry, I said I would protect you, but I couldn’t."

The apology brimming with guilt pained Gu Xiaoqing’s heart.

This wasn’t Fang Shaohan’s fault. No one could predict how everything would unfold, and Fang Shaohan had already done everything he could to rush over.

"You did your best."
