Chapter 67: The marriage was no longer an alliance

"Nothing, it’s good you rely on your husband, now go up and get some rest, I have a meeting to attend to, I’ll join you in a bit.."

Lixue nodded and stood up, the staff bowed when they saw her coming, Lixue bowed back as well since they were older than her.

When did they come? It was usually just auntie Feng.

Lixue’s thoughts lingered on the unfamiliar staff as she ascended the staircase. Auntie Feng had always been the only one bustling around the mansion, and it wasn’t like Mo Ran to bring in new faces without mentioning it.

She glanced back over her shoulder to the foyer where a few staff members were moving quietly about their duties. Their uniforms were crisp, their movements efficient, yet something about their presence unsettled her.

Did Mo Ran hire them because of what happened?

Once she reached their bedroom, she shut the door softly behind her and leaned against it for a moment, her mind still buzzing. The events of the past twenty-four hours had drained her, but now her curiosity mingled with unease.

Lixue moved to the window, pulling aside the heavy curtain to gaze out at the sprawling estate. The garden below, was meticulously maintained, a picture of serenity, but her thoughts were far from calm.

Why didn’t he tell me about the new staff? And why so many?

Deciding she wouldn’t overthink it tonight, she turned and began to prepare for bed. Her silk robe brushed against the polished floors as she walked to the vanity, untying her hair and running her fingers through the long strands.

Her mind drifted back to her mother—how fragile she’d looked, how small she seemed in that hospital bed.

She shook her head, trying to push the thoughts aside. There would be time to figure everything out when she woke up. Mo Ran would handle the rest, as he always did.

Sliding into the cool sheets, Lixue pulled the blanket up to her chin, her gaze lingering on the door. She trusted Mo Ran, but she couldn’t shake the faint feeling that something more was happening beneath the surface.

As her eyes grew heavy, she murmured softly to herself, "I’ll ask him tomorrow... about the staff. And everything else."

But sleep claimed her before she could dwell on it further.

Downstairs, Mo Ran dismissed the staff with a sharp wave of his hand. "You’ve been briefed on your duties. I don’t want a single misstep. Understood?"

The head of the group, a middle-aged man with a stern expression, nodded. "Understood, sir. We’ll ensure her safety."

Mo Ran’s gaze hardened. "Good. I don’t want her knowing about this yet. Keep a low profile unless absolutely necessary."

As the staff dispersed, Mo Ran leaned against the edge of the dining table, his jaw clenched. The night’s events had rattled him more than he cared to admit. He couldn’t shake the image of Liang Cheng’s mocking smirk or the cryptic way he’d said Lixue’s name.

Why involve her?

He exhaled deeply, running a hand through his hair. Whatever was coming, he’d be ready for it.

He brought out his phone and dialed a number, now after the stunt the Yu family had pulled off, it was time to make them suffer.

"Hello? Awful time for a call boss"

"..."

Mo Ran’s lips twitched, he knew very well he wasn’t asleep, the night workers were only reachable at night.

"Lao Tzu? The records on the Nangong and Yu family I want them, that of the Qin family as well and Yu Jia’s dealings in Dream Entertainment. You have three days to give me what I need.."

"..."

"Who made the boss angry?! I’ll get it done in two days... max, though the Nangong family are a bit tight lipped, there’s nothing I can’t dig.."

"Good, I want everything you can get about them. That would be all for now.."

Mo Ran ended the call before Lao Tzu could reply, he didn’t need to wait for affirmation, he knew Tzu could do it.

He stared at the laptop, he had a meeting but he would shift it to tomorrow, he wasn’t a machine, he too needed to rest.

"Leave breakfast to auntie Feng, you take care of the rest.."

The older man nodded as Mo Ran headed upstairs, he knew Lixue was wondering why there were so many new people in the house, he would tell her tomorrow, when she was much more stable.

Ding!

The clock chimed, signifying that it was past 6am, Mo Ran sighed, he needed to get his sleep schedule in order.

He had work in the morning, he chuckled as he walked into the room, a little bit of lack of sleep never killed anyone.

The room was quiet and dimly lit when he got in, he stared at Lixue gently, she had been through so much, now it was time for him to step him and ease her path.

"I’m here, you don’t need to work too hard, I’ll do the hard work so you can get everything you need easily.."

He stroked her cheeks gently before heading to the bathroom, taking a quick shower and slipping on some comfy clothes, he laid down besides Lixue.

Wrapping his hands around her and wishing hee goodnight, he fell asleep soundly next to her.

"My nights are peaceful when I’m with you, I’m not sure I can sleep without you Lixue.."

These words played in his lips and mind, he didn’t know when or how, but he could feel it in his heart, he didn’t see their marriage as just an alliance anymore, all he could see was his wife, a woman he had made no mistake in marrying.

Hours had passed, and soon the chirping of birds could be heard. Their peaceful sleep as disturb by a knock on the door.

Mo Ran’s eyes cracked open as he got up, he knew no one would knock on his door unless it was important.

Opening the door, he saw that it was one of the new workers.

"Good morning young master Mo, sorry to disturb your rest. But the old master and mistress of the Mo family are here to see you.."

"..."

Mo Ran blinked, his grandparents hand come come a visit?

He sighed and nodded "Tell them we’ll be down shortly."
