Rebirth: CEO's Sweetheart Reaches the Life Pinnacle!-Chapter 691 - 608: What Are You Eating For?
Since that day, when she found out that the woman making a scene about Simeng’s facial issue turned out to be Wang Ruotong’s aunt, this was the first time they had run into each other.
Liu Manlian enthusiastically stood up and smiled, "Li Si, what a coincidence! I actually saw you earlier, but since you were sitting near the main table, I felt a bit awkward to come over and say hello!"
It was only after arriving at the scene that she realized Li Si had a connection to the Xu family’s son. At first, she thought it might have been due to Li Si’s husband’s relations.
It was only after seeing the toast exchange earlier that she noticed Li Si had a particularly close relationship with the bride as well.
The once frail, pitiable little girl had, at last, risen to a position even she had to look up to. She couldn’t help but feel oddly complicated inside.
And then, turning to look at her own daughter, who was of the same age and had been showered with love since childhood, but now fell short of Li Si... How could she remain calm?
"Li Si, you’re good friends with both the bride and groom?" Wang Ruotong, still moved and envious from Xu Er’s impressive dance performance earlier, chimed in excitedly, "The groom and those groomsmen danced so fabulously! Could you introduce us someday? We’re all friends, after all!"
In truth, she was only acquaintances with those groomsmen, knowing them just enough to exchange nods.
As Wang Ruotong said this, she saw Liu Manlian sporting a "whatever" attitude.
Li Si smiled faintly, "Sure, let’s do that when the opportunity arises."
Wang Ruotong didn’t catch on to Li Si’s dismissive tone, but Liu Manlian immediately understood. Her eyes darted around as she chuckled, "Ruotong! Really, after all this time you finally bump into Li Si, and you’re talking about introductions! By the way, Li Si, I sincerely apologize for what my sister-in-law did. Both Ruotong and I only found out about it later!
Her uncle was extremely angry and scolded her thoroughly! We’ve even been thinking about arranging a dinner sometime to express our apologies!"
Li Si calmly observed, having anticipated this topic would come up. She replied indifferently, "What’s done is done, so let’s just leave it at that! I’ve been very busy lately and don’t have the time. Aunt Liu, Ruotong, I’m going to check on my friends over there, let’s talk later, okay?"
With that, she linked arms with the silently observing Su Meng and turned to leave the banquet hall.
Wang Ruotong pouted in frustration, "Mom, why did you bring that up?"
Her aunt’s issue—what did it have to do with them? Bringing it up again after all this time, of course Li Si wasn’t going to be happy!
Liu Manlian looked at her daughter helplessly, glanced around, and lowered her voice, "Ruotong! Haven’t you realized yet? Li Si is no longer the same little girl she used to be.
The people she mingles with now—well, her perspective has changed naturally.
As for your aunt’s incident, we’re not directly involved, but for the sake of... Sigh, why am I explaining this to you. Just know, everything I do, I do for you, alright?"
Certain things weren’t suited for this time and place, so she had to suppress her swirling emotions for now.
Wang Ruotong nodded half-heartedly, looking toward the doorway without saying more, though a flicker of something unusual appeared in her gaze.
After Li Si and Su Meng had left the table, Leng Mochen accompanied Long Wu over to Heizi’s table.
Heizi gave a thoughtful look around—it was definitely not the place for this kind of discussion.
"Leng Er! Long Wu! Let’s find somewhere quiet to chat!"
Leng Mochen’s eyes flickered briefly, and he nodded.
The three of them entered a nearby lounge, where Heizi pulled out a pack of cigarettes, motioning to offer them. Leng Mochen waved it off, while Long Wu hesitated for a moment before accepting one.
As Heizi lit his cigarette, he finally spoke, "Regarding your son’s case, Xiao Ding and those two men have confessed outright to the crimes. If they’re charged with child trafficking, the sentence could range between 5 to 10 years of imprisonment. Ultimately, though, it depends on how the court rules on sentencing."
Leng Mochen’s expression turned icy as he lifted his gaze, "What about Nie Xiuwei?"
Xiao Ding and those two men were undeniably despicable, but the true cunning villain behind it all was undoubtedly Nie Xiuwei.
From the moment Nie Xiuwei surfaced, he’d been opposing him at every turn.
Which meant this time, he had no intention of letting him off so easily.
Heizi’s face darkened instantly as he took a hard drag on his cigarette, "Nie Xiuwei has been taken away by Interpol. We suspect he’s involved with certain individuals overseas in a rather unusual manner.
Currently, all the leads we’ve managed to trace have been severed."
Talking about it left him fuming, though at times circumstances simply overshadowed the ability to act.
Different nationalities often meant complications in handling such matters.
"Damn it!" Long Wu erupted furiously, kicking the chair beside him. "He’s just allowed to walk off like that? What exactly are you guys even doing?"
His anger knew no bounds. That bastard heading abroad—who knew if he’d find a way to turn the situation around?
"Long Wu!" Leng Mochen reprimanded him sharply.
He could empathize with Heizi’s frustration in recounting those difficulties, understanding full well they had given it their all.
But some gray-area dealings weren’t meant to be openly discussed.
For example, even though they were directly involved in apprehending Nie Xiuwei, they ultimately had to cooperate and hand over the criminal to another party.
Thoughts of Qin Xin made Leng Mochen’s gaze grow sharper.
Where exactly was Qin Xin now? What was the nature of the transaction between Nie Xiuwei and Qin He?
These remained veiled mysteries awaiting his continued investigation.
If it weren’t for long-standing camaraderie, Heizi would’ve stormed out by now.
He glared at Long Wu with wide, angry eyes and snapped, "Long Wu! You better watch your tone! We’ve been buddies for years—you should know damn well what kind of person I am!"
"Leng Er, I know you probably know something, but whether you say it or not doesn’t matter anymore. In any case, if you’re heading abroad, be cautious!"
With that, he didn’t bother waiting for any sort of response before walking out the door.
Long Wu pointed at his retreating back sheepishly, "That guy! He’s ridiculously petty! I was just venting, was that really necessary?"
"Was that venting?" Leng Mochen cast him a placid glance, saying nothing further, though inwardly he began to deliberate anew.
Long Wu squinted as he leaned closer, "Still, what did Heizi mean with his parting words? Leng Er, are there things you know but haven’t shared yet?"
When Li Si and Su Meng came out of the restroom, chatting and laughing, and returned to their seats, Leng Mochen and Long Wu had just sat down as well.
However, Long Wu’s face looked rather unsettled.
Leng Mochen quietly asked Li Si, "Shall we leave first?"
Given the shift in circumstances, he needed to make preparations ahead of time.
After the National Day holiday, once work resumed, Mr. Leng Sr.’s lawyer would present certain documents to the board.
There were still two days left to maneuver some arrangements.
Li Si nodded, "Alright!"
She was still fretting about Buding back at home, unsure whether the little one had cried or caused trouble. The handful of bodyguards hastily rounded up weren’t remotely skilled in babysitting, after all.
Long Wu insisted on staying to fully enjoy the lively celebration with his buddies, and Su Meng opted to stay as well.
Li Si linked arms with Leng Mochen and left the hotel early, heading straight to the parking lot. She had so many thoughts about Xu Er’s performance that she couldn’t help but chatter away, endlessly.
All the while, she failed to notice Leng Mochen’s unusual silence at the moment.
