Chapter 38: Stargazer

On the page that the book was open on, it mentioned the amount of resources each Jackal took.

"20 Corrupt Shards.... This power was from only 20 of these?"

In his mind, he thought it might have taken at least 5 times that to power a thing like that with corrupt energy, but the more he read, the harder reality of the situation set in.

Whoever was creating them, planned to do so on a massive scale, in hundreds at least.

'They must have a weakness!'

He frantically flipped through the pages finding nothing but different prototypes of the four-legged robot.

It repeated what he had already known throughout all of them. There were two ways to destroy it, and both were equally hard.

'So I either need to overload it with energy or overfill it with that weird liquid.'

[Leave without me, I still have an Escape Stone.]

It would be pointless for his summons to stay there if he couldn't get out through the exit anyway.

Leo snatched the notebook and hid it under his cloak before smashing one of the last Escape Stones he had.

Just as he got out, he could finally see the situation The Fearmonger and Nyssa were in.

The other Jackal stood there, not looking too good as sparks came out of its three claws.

Around him was the same party that tried to run away earlier, now keeping the monster in check while reinforcements were arriving.

"Leo! They ran back once they got the notification about the breach!!!"

Nyssa shouted to him with a wide smile while tanking the damage from the Jackal.

Now that he had given a quick read to the different prototypes he could say this one was not nearly as advanced.

If it were, its leg wouldn't be destroyed by a single attack he sent earlier.

That didn't change the situation, since for the group of average Climbers it was a boss-level monster, many casualties fell on their side but they didn't lose their morale.

"We need to keep it away from the cities!"

Their lieutenant shouted as all of them swarmed the monster, they tried to destroy the core as per Fearmonger's request, however, it didn't seem to have any effect on it.

'Doesn't seem to absorb energy...'

Leo flipped through the pages, searching for a model that couldn't do that. He finally found it, it was around 3 generations younger than the one they had just defeated and thus had more design flaws.

"The kneecaps are the weak point!"

He shouted out to all of them, after Zeph translated his words, they were met with instant compliance as all of them switched the strategy from the core itself to the joints in the Jackal's knees.

Of course, the robot didn't want to allow that to happen, but the overwhelming number of people paired with its lack of abilities allowed it to counter this strategy.

Every time it was about to pierce one of the soldiers, the Hellwings saved them from under its claws.

More and more Climbers kept driving in that direction as the information about the gate breach spread through Birder and news sources.

It surprised the oncoming people that there was only one monster if you could even call it that. But now that there were enough people, Leo decided to just let them handle the whole situation.

Right before Leo and the three gems left the gate, the Jackal had been subdued and taken apart.

"Wow, you beat it without my help?"

Gloppy asked as he left the demon realm and looked at the carcass of the monster. Behind him were the three girls who looked very sleepy because of the constant action.

As all of them left, the portal turned into the normal color and closed down. A bunch of confused Climber groups kept running around with injured people and giving them medical care.

"Well, does it look like I beat it?"

He replied before heading to Zeph and dragging her to the heads of the teams who stood in a circle discussing something.

"We would like to request the teams here to go and take care of all the gates but the Hydra one."

She translated his words for him and let the two parties communicate. The leaders looked at each other and laughed soundly.

"And why exactly do you think we would do that?"

The biggest one of them all said while flexing his muscles. That took him by surprise, it seemed to him like the reason for that would be obvious.

"To prevent the gates from merging with our world?"

All of them looked at each other confused about what he was talking about. Instead of answering, they showed them an article online,

It said that all of the remaining gates besides the one where the Hydra resided were... empty. But how?

Something was certainly wrong and Leo could feel it deep inside him, all of it was just far too strange.

"Okay... thank you and sorry for taking your time."

Leo said before walking back to sit in the van where he began to create a mental map.

'If we count the sudden appearance of this Corrupted clan and the disappearance of monsters from other gates then we are left with... an even bigger question mark than before...'

He just sighed and laid on the sofa, deciding to catch some sleep before they went into the last gate left in America.

Ruby and her sisters also decided to sleep, going to do so in one of the bedrooms, and so did Nyssa. The only passengers who stayed up were Gloppy and The Fearmonger.

She frowned after seeing the bunch using her car without even asking her, but decided not to be mad. Instead she sat at the drivers seat and drove off to the last gate.

The summoner opened his eyes and stretched his arms and legs. He could feel a blanket on himself that he didn't remember taking.

'It was a while since I slept so well. But how did this get here?'

It was dark outside now, and stars were easily visible in the night sky. Zeph stood there marveling at their sight and not realizing Leo was awake.

To think she would change so much in such a short time, and to even allow them to sleep in her van... that felt like the most unbelievable part.

"That's the Big Dipper right there, and there is the Orion's belt."

He listed them to her one by one, catching her by surprise.

"I didn't know you were awake. We won't be able to get closer to the gate from here because..."

Leo stopped her from continuing by placing a finger on her lips, not saying anything himself, just enjoying the sight in front of them.

Neither of them knew how tomorrow's raid on the gate would go tomorrow.

But right now the only thing they wanted to do was continue gazing at the stars.
