Chapter 34: Breach

The portal turned from blue to deep black and purple, slowly sucking everything around itself.

"Is this safe..?"

Nyssa asked while taking a few steps back, preventing it from sucking her in. Leo looked at her and smiled before throwing his hand in the air.

"Like I know! Let's go find out."

[Pirate Fleet: Slimy Pearl]

Just at that moment, the summoned Slimy Pearl went through him and Emerald grabbed his fist through the lower deck, pulling him onto it.

"Good job girls."

He shook off the slime from his jeans and began to walk upstairs. Inside, he felt very anxious, but he didn't let it show, breathing deeply to relax.

His hands were shaking as he went all the way up. The flagship was right about to enter the mysterious gate, sailing on the bodies of summoned slimes working as water.

Right behind him was the brawler girl and Zeph, who got pulled by Ruby and Sapphire.

"Listen here!"

Leo grabbed the attention of all of the group of people trying to run away. They stopped running and looked at him with confusion.

"We are going to an uncharted territory, I can't guarantee your safety... BUT if we don't close those gates, the whole world might be doomed!"

It didn't seem to work, as not even one of them spoke; they just stood there. He scoffed at their attitude and switched his focus to the gate itself.

[Entering Void #$@&]

All of them didn't dare to speak or as much as move as they passed through it. Even the usually calm and collected Fearmonger went even paler than usual as the ship sailed onwards.

The insides of the gate reminded Leo and Nyssa of the 5th floor where they fought Ifrit. Every corner was filled with magma. Tall mountains erupted with smoke everywhere, filling the whole area with deadly toxins.

On the ship, every human began to cough uncontrollably, they fell to their knees as their airways filled with the smoke.

"Breath through this."

Gloppy held out his slimy arm, putting it against Zeph's mouth. She trusted him and took a long breath. His ooze worked as a filter that allowed them to breathe normally.

Emerald and Sapphire ran to help Leo and Nyssa too.

In front of them, they could see humanoid creatures that looked like they hadn't eaten anything in a long while.

They held pickaxes in their hands and struck them weakly against the ground. It was very hard to make out the details on their bodies due to the smoke.

"One... two"

A convoy of creatures got closer towards them, slowly emerging from the smoke.

As to not get spotted and asses the situation even further, the Slime Overlord recalled their flagship and summons.

Once it was fully gone, they hid behind nearby boulders and peeked at what was going on.

Now that the monsters were no longer obstructed by smoke they could tell what they were.

Demons.

Lessers of the Ifrit, but still way stronger than they could take on, especially in this quantity.

But there was something visibly wrong about them. There was barely any meat on their bones, no muscles no nothing, just skin.

And the dreaded dark energy covered most of them, pulsing uncontrollably but not going critical.

They pulled a trolley filled with Corrupted Shards, although unrefined ones. There were hundreds of them.

One of the demons tripped and fell to the ground, injuring himself.

"Ouch!"

He screamed in pain. As he did so, the entire mine went silent.

"Get up now! They will be right here."

The other monster pulling the trolley whispered, sweating all over his face as they heard something slithering towards them.

A metallic arm pulled the injured creature back into the screen of smoke, for a moment the only thing that could be heard were his pleas for help and sparing his life.

Right after, another demon came to help him pull the trolley. Both of them looked at each other with despair in their eyes but didn't dare to speak.

As they passed the boulder where the party of Climbers hid, they took out the shards and were about to throw them through the gate.

Leo dashed and grabbed the one further from him while Gloppy did the same with the other.

One of them tried to break free and wriggled around to break free.

After a hit to the neck, he was fast asleep on the ground.

The Fearmonger flew closer to him, putting her hands on his horns.

[He is not from my tribe.]

She pointed towards his horns being thicker and way shorter.

They needed something to write if they were to communicate with each other.

Zeph handed them her notebook and pen after she saw Leo show her a writing motion with his free hand.

Strange glyphs filled the paper as The Fearmonger kept writing.

It was hard to call their chat a conversation as the only way to communicate they had was her writing a question down, and him either nodding or shaking his head.

With each question, she looked more frustrated as he kept shaking his head at all of them.

[Bad news Leo, they know nothing.]

She frowned while staring at the poor demon in front of her.

[Ask them if they have been throwing the shards through this gate for a long time now.]

Finally, the demon nodded. With a few extra questions, they narrowed down the time frame.

Suddenly they could hear the slithering of the metal arm approaching them. A smaller tentacle detached from the end of the arm and flew towards them, scanning everything on its way.

They had to think of something fast if they didn't want to get caught.

Nyssa tried to grab as many shards as possible and store them in her inventory, but before she could touch them, Leo pulled her back.

He didn't want to risk creating tens of the same orbs as before if they worked in a similar fashion. With the help of the one awake demon, they pulled the trolley away and hid behind a different boulder.

Just as they were about to go back for the unconscious demon, the tentacle found him and he was instantly snatched as well.

The tentacle beeped happily as it flew back towards the metal arm thinking it had finished its mission.

Due to their carelessness in moving the cart though, a few shards fell and cracked against the ground, spilling liquid that looked exactly like the creature's markings.

It began to vibrate on the floor and then flew in the direction of the demon. Once it was close to him, it directed right into the enormous patch on its torso and spread it farther across its body.

Not a moment later, the monster began to scream in pain, crying for help.

"Help me! O great Lucifer please spare me!"

They began to run from the creature, knowing that the arm would be there in a moment. The ground rumbled under them and an ominous message appeared.

[1 hour left until the Breach]
