Chapter 107: Schemes!

The warning, however, was too late. Marx crashed into a soft wall. He heard a cry before he fell on his back and landed on a soft body.

Before he came back to his senses, he felt two soft arms hugging him tight. He quickly unfastened the arms and rolled to the right. As he expected, it was Phoebe. He stood up.

"Sorry, I did not see you. Are you alright?" he asked in a concerned voice. It was his fault, after all. He extended his hand to help her up.

Phoebe was delighted. She happily took Marx’s hand and let him pull her up.

She landed on dried leaves, so her body had no serious injury apart from her exposed upper arms that reddened. However, she acted as if she was seriously injured.

"My back hurts." She said pitifully.

"Are you alright, Phoebe?" Dave, who had just gotten out of the water, hurried to them. Liza and Margaret followed right behind him.

"She said that her back hurts," Marx repeated Phoebe’s words.

Amaya had already come down from the tree and was standing beside Marx. She looked at Phoebe strangely. From up the tree, she clearly saw that Phoebe knew Marx was moving towards her, but she stayed still.

"Why did you not get out of the way? Marx has his back on you, but you clearly saw him." Amaya asked in an innocent voice.

Phoebe’s eyes flickered, but it only lasted for a second. She looked at Amaya coldly.

"Marx was moving randomly, and I can’t predict where he is going next." Phoebe glanced at Marx. Then her gaze darted to the others who came and surrounded her. ’Damn, these people. It is not easy for me to create this opportunity with Marx, and they ruined it.’

Amaya approached Phoebe and wanted to check her back.

Phoebe stepped back. "What are you doing?"

"I just wanted to check your back to see if you have bruises. I brought some herbs for wounds and bruises." Amaya was sincere in wanting to help her.

Phoebe was horrified. She moved away from Amaya and purposely moved closer to Marx.

"What? Do you want to put herbs on me? Wouldn’t my back turn green, and I’ll smell disgusting? What era are we in now that you would still use herbs?" She looked at Amaya like she was a boor.

"Don’t worry. We brought a first aid kit and some ointments, and besides, my back doesn’t hurt anymore."

Amaya sighed helplessly. She just wanted to help, but she was totally rejected and maligned.

"Hey, why don’t we have our snacks first. We left very early and I’m pretty sure all of us did not have full breakfast." Dave tried to dispel the tension in the air.

Everyone agreed, and they settled on the rocks littered along the river bank, taking out their lunchboxes.

The mangoes were a bit messy to eat. Marx took out a small knife and sliced the mango into three. He threw away the middle part, which was the seed. He was about to give the other half to Amaya when she saw her about to finish the entire fruit.

Amaya used her bare hands to peel the mango. She left a small portion unpeeled so she could hold it while eating it.

The rest of the group watched Amaya with wide eyes. She didn’t care about how she looked like at all.

"You want some more?" Marx offered her half the mango.

Amaya shook her head. "Too much mango will make our sweat smell like mango."

While the others were eating their snacks, Amaya went to the river to wash her hands and face. She then took out her paper and colored pencils and marked them on it.

Marx approached her and looked at the paper she lay on a smooth rock.

"This is an ideal place for a treehouse. What do you think, Marx?"

Marx looked around. He had taken photos and videos earlier, and she agreed that it was ideal for a treehouse. A bamboo grove and a river were nearby, and the area under the mango and banyan trees was clear of vegetation.

When Vasquez and Drake noticed that Marx and Amaya were working on the map, they approached them and shared the information that they had gathered about the surrounding area. They were the loyal guards that Marx brought with him from Usturia.

Amaya handed Marx the A4-size paper and pencil. She thought he could draw better than her. Additionally, she did not understand when the two men started giving her longitudes and latitudes as references.

Dave, Enrico, and the other mountaineers, whose name was Ricardo, also shared what they had observed. Even Phoebe, Liza, and Margaret contributed.

Marx used different colors to mark the rivers, caves, and dense vegetation. They also marked places where they discovered hares, pheasants, snakes, and mountain goats.

After resting for a few more minutes, everyone continued to climb. They had covered three-fourths of the way, and as the route was not difficult, they should reach the summit of the small mountain by ten o’clock. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚

When they came to a stream, they decided to take a quick rest to answer nature’s call. Marx quickly updated the map and looked for a place to relieve himself.

After relieving herself, Amaya climbed a tree to scout the surrounding area. From her position, she saw Phoebe following Marx. The place where Marx went was far from the others. She used the vines to transfer from one tree to another until Phoebe was just a few meters away.

Marx heard a cry. He followed the sound and saw Phoebe sitting on a tree stump, massaging her ankle.

"Marx, can you help me? I think I sprained my ankle." Phoebe cried pitifully.

Marx hesitated, but in the end, he kneeled on the ground and removed Phoebe’s shoe and sock. He checked her ankle, but there was no swelling or visible signs of a sprain. He looked up to ask Phoebe but saw fear in her eyes, and she was about to scream.

Marx looked back and froze when he saw Amaya holding her bow and arrow and aiming at Phoebe’s head.
