Chapter 604: Chapter 604: First-Time Parents (3)_1

She didn’t know why she had this intuition. For several months now, she realized how much she missed James Horne. She missed those days when she could speak her mind freely without anyone minding. Although James would say she talked a lot, he never truly minded. She missed racing with James even more—alright, perhaps it was wishful thinking on her part each time, as James never really paid her any mind. Regardless, she missed him dearly. James didn’t have many friends in his life. And though Rebecca Hughes had a straightforward personality, she didn’t have many friends either. She had long considered James her best friend.

"What’s wrong, are you lovesick?" Julia teased with a smile.

She thought Rebecca Hughes was a good match for James. James treated Rebecca Hughes differently; at least Rebecca could be by James’s side. Based on this alone, she could confirm that Rebecca held a place in James’s heart.

"I do miss him," Rebecca replied honestly; she was never the type to beat around the bush.

Hearing this, Julia’s smile widened.

Impressed by Rebecca’s honesty, Julia decided she would get James’s whereabouts from Glades and let Rebecca go to him. She believed Glades also hoped James could find true love. Though Rebecca had a somewhat wild streak, her heart was pure, perfectly complementing James’s reserved nature. If James could let go of his infatuation with her and develop a relationship with Rebecca, Glades wouldn’t have to be jealous of his brother anymore. This would also be more beneficial for their marriage.

Just then, the door to the Maternity Room was pushed open, and Glades awkwardly came in, carrying the baby himself.

The baby, freshly bathed, looked refreshed and alert. His wide, dark eyes darted around curiously. His plump little hand kept going to his mouth; he was probably hungry.

"Julia." When Glades came in and saw Rebecca, he casually glanced at her and, uncharacteristically, nodded in greeting. Usually, he wouldn’t even spare her a glance. In that moment, the sheer joy of new fatherhood had completely overshadowed his usual unpredictable temperament. Like any new father, his heart and eyes were filled only with his wife and son.

"Let me hold him," Julia said, eagerly stretching out her arms.

"’You’re still weak. I’ll hold him; you just look,’ said Glades. The way he held the baby was clearly incorrect and looked quite comical. He sat down in front of Julia with the baby in his arms, letting her see him.

"So tiny," Julia remarked, her first words upon seeing her son echoing Glades’s own.

"Newborns are always like this," Glades responded with a smile.

"Glades, our son looks like you. No wonder he liked playing with you when he was in my belly," Julia said with a smile as she gently caressed her son’s small face.

Glades looked down at his son. Does he look like me? He’s so small, I really can’t tell who he resembles.

"WAH—WAH—" After sucking on his little hand for a moment, the baby, likely realizing it wasn’t food, began to cry, his wails surprisingly strong. His delicate little hand flailed, eyes squeezed shut, mouth wide open, as he continued to wail.

"Why is he crying?" Julia asked nervously. She had never taken care of a child before and had no experience at all.

"’I don’t know. He was fine just a moment ago. Why is he crying now? Oh, sweetheart, don’t cry, don’t cry.’ Glades didn’t know why the baby was crying either. He awkwardly held the baby, rocking him. Rebecca watched anxiously from the side, terrified he might accidentally lose his grip and send the baby flying.

The baby was hungry; even if the rocking made him dizzy, he kept crying. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Glades grew anxious. He stood up with the baby in his arms and began pacing back and forth in the spacious and well-lit Maternity Room, continuously cooing to comfort the baby, looking every bit the doting Dad.

"Young Master, the little young master’s formula is ready," Aunt Mei announced, entering with the freshly prepared milk. The Old Madam was getting on in years and hadn’t come to the hospital that day. So, she had asked Aunt Mei to help look after the baby and Julia, worried that Glades, lacking experience, wouldn’t know what to do.

"Aunt Mei, he keeps crying, and I don’t know what’s wrong," said Julia, a new mother full of worry and tension. Hearing her baby’s cries, Julia felt her heart clench. For the first time, she truly understood what it meant for a child to be the apple of a mother’s eye.

Seeing Aunt Mei was like seeing a savior. Aunt Mei was an experienced mother.

"Don’t worry, Young Madam. The baby is probably hungry," Aunt Mei chuckled. Holding the bottle, she walked over to Glades. Seeing how he was holding the baby, she couldn’t help but softly exclaim, "Young Master, that’s not how you hold a baby. A baby that small needs to be held against an adult’s body to feel secure. Also, newborns are very delicate and shouldn’t be held upright like you’re doing. They should be cradled, with their head resting on the adult’s arm and their body held close. This way, the baby will feel comfortable and safe."

Glades had been supporting the baby’s head with one hand and holding his waist with the other, but not close to his own body, and still in an upright position. This not only made the baby uncomfortable but also feel insecure.

Aunt Mei took the baby from Glades’s arms. She carefully held the child, then returned to Julia’s bedside and sat down. She gently placed the comfortably warm bottle into the baby’s mouth. The baby was famished; he had been crying for so long before finally getting something to eat. He immediately latched onto the nipple and began to drink the formula.

"So he was hungry."

Glades and Julia looked at each other, both appearing to have an epiphany.

After the baby had drunk about ten milliliters of formula, Aunt Mei stopped him from suckling further. She explained that newborns can’t eat much and shouldn’t be overfed, or they might spit up.

Once full, the baby quieted down. His eyelids grew heavy, and he soon fell asleep. Newborns spend most of their time eating or sleeping.

Aunt Mei shared a few more parenting tips with the couple before taking the baby back to the Nursery Room.

Later, Julia managed to get James’s whereabouts from Glades and told Rebecca, so she could go find him.
