Everything felt like a dream from yesterday, yet it had all happened with such startling reality.

She never dreamed that her future brother-in-law, the good man in her eyes, would dramatically become her husband—and the transition had been swift. Such melodramatic plots were common in novels and TV shows, but she never expected one to be part of her life. As things stood, they had been husband and wife for almost half a year, and the happiness and joy of their marriage made her grateful for these seemingly scripted moments.

Embracing his enchanting wife, Glades Horne's hand rested on her swelling belly, gently caressing it as he murmured, "Daughter, Daddy's back. Daddy missed you so much. Did you miss Daddy?"

Hearing his murmurs, Julia responded, "The baby is so partial; she doesn't like playing with me, her mommy. It takes ages to get a reaction when I try to amuse her, and even then, it's a half-hearted one."

Hearing this, Glades Horne laughed.

It was deep in the night, and the fetus would normally be asleep. Glades Horne didn't want to wake the baby. After a soft pat, he wrapped his arm back around Julia's waist.

"Glades, have I gotten really heavy?"

"I can still hold you."

"So, you're saying I have indeed gotten heavy?"

"You're not fat; the extra weight is because of the baby."

"I wonder if I can get back to normal after giving birth."

"You will."

Julia fell silent, yawning.

As long as Glades was by her side, she felt safe. She didn't need to worry about anything or care about the rest; she could just follow her heart.

The adage that a brief separation can make a marriage feel even sweeter than a honeymoon applied not only to Glades Horne but also to Hansen Ruiz.

Hansen Ruiz rushed home even faster than Glades Horne because Rachel Bailey had just become pregnant. He was going to be a father, and the ecstatic joy of a soon-to-be dad gave him superhuman speed.

Returning home late at night, the first person he wanted to see was his little woman. But as he drove his car into his garage, he found a car that shouldn't be there occupying his space. The vehicle was strikingly familiar—it was his own mother's. How could he not recognize it?

His mother had come again! And she had decided to stay!

Hansen Ruiz's face darkened. Since when had his mother become so thick-skinned? She kept coming to his house. Without asking, he knew she was targeting Rachel. How long had his mother been here this time? Why hadn't Rachel told him? He guessed she didn't want to worry him.

"Young Master?"

The first person awakened by Hansen Ruiz's return was naturally Floyd Thomas. He was Alwin Ruiz's personal bodyguard, professionally trained with keen hearing and fast reflexes. As the sound of the car reached him, he immediately woke up, but by the time he hurriedly rose, Hansen Ruiz had already driven in.

Hansen Ruiz ignored him, his face grim, and headed straight for the Main House.

Floyd Thomas quickly followed him inside.

Because it was so dark, Hansen Ruiz, though angry, moved lightly. He was afraid of waking Rachel, who was sleeping in one of the rooms on the second floor. In the early stages of pregnancy, Rachel's body was still adjusting, and she had been feeling drowsy. She would go to sleep right after talking to Hansen Ruiz on the phone every night, sleeping so early, yet she always felt as if she hadn't slept enough.

Julia had told her that such reactions were normal at this stage.

She also started craving sour foods. This season, small green plums had already hit the market. They were quite sour, and not everyone liked them, but she adored them. She would buy a bag every day, wash them, and eat them. The mere sight of her eating these plums made Alwin Ruiz's face scrunch up from the sourness. Now, whenever Alwin Ruiz saw her eating plums, she would keep her distance, wary of the sour scent.

The relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law did not improve with Rachel's pregnancy; instead, it intensified. This was partly because Rachel was an independent person who didn't easily let Alwin Ruiz control her. However, Alwin Ruiz was actually pleased to see Rachel enjoying sour foods, saying that a craving for "sour means a boy, spicy means a girl," so Rachel's love for sour things indicated she was carrying a grandson.

Rachel scoffed at this inwardly. Her own mother had told her there was no certainty in such beliefs, as she herself had craved sour foods when pregnant with Rachel. Of course, Rachel wasn't foolish enough to say this to her mother-in-law. Her mother-in-law didn't approve of her, and even less of her family. If she knew Rachel's mother had said otherwise, she would surely dislike Rachel's family even more.

Ever since finding out about her pregnancy, every day when Rachel went back to the village to transport vegetables, her mother would prepare lots of delicious food for her, helping to supplement her nutrition. Her mother knew how to manage a household, and each dish she prepared was different, easily arousing an appetite. In contrast, Alwin Ruiz, who controlled the finances, wouldn't cook but only bought her tonics. At this point, it wasn't yet time for heavy supplementation. Comparatively, Rachel much preferred her own mother's methods of providing nourishment.
