"Mom, Mila has asked for a divorce," Gian Horne said quietly. He didn't refute his mother's accusations because he really was at fault.

Upon hearing this, the old lady was stunned for a moment and then asked, "When did this happen? Was it the night of the Minor New Year?"

Gian Horne nodded.

"What's your take on this?" the old lady asked in return.

Unable to help himself, Gian Horne looked up, met his mother's gaze, and said in a low, urgent voice, "Mom, Mila and I are getting on in years. To get a divorce at our age… When I was younger, I would never get a divorce, and I won't now either. I'm about to become a grandfather. How could I possibly get a divorce now?"

After looking at him intently for a moment, the old lady said irritably, "This is all self-inflicted. I'm an old woman, and I'm tired of meddling in your affairs. Do whatever you want. It's time you faced the consequences of your infidelity."

"Mom!" Gian Horne cried out uncomfortably, pleading, "Mila has always treated you with respect. Please, help me talk to her. We're both old now. If she's angry, if she hates… hasn't she been feeling that way for almost thirty years? Hasn't she been angry or hated enough? If we get divorced, how will Glades look at me? How will he treat me? I don't want our family to fall apart."

HUMPH!

The old lady couldn't help but let out several cold laughs. Her eyes suddenly became sharp and icy, like two swords piercing through Gian Horne's embarrassment and urgency. She scoffed, "What, now you care about how Glades sees you? When you were cheating, Glades was only three years old. Tell me, he's watched you cheat for thirty years. Do you really care how he sees you? If you truly cared, you wouldn't have cheated. How will he treat you? Right. You're now like a lump of clay in Glades's hands. If he wants to shape you round, you'll be round; if he wants you flat, you'll be flat. He's your pride and also your nemesis. Are you scared? If you'd known this would happen, why did you do it in the first place? How can I persuade Mila? I am your mother, so naturally, my heart sides with you. But I am also a woman, and on matters of principle, I must side with Mila."

The old lady and her late husband had lived a long and loving life together, a couple for decades with affection as constant as their first day. She could least tolerate unfaithful men. Unfortunately, her own eldest son was unfaithful, which caused her much heartache. Although the Horne and Anderson families had a marriage alliance, Gian Horne and Mila Anderson knew each other before they married; they understood each other. Was it so difficult for him to fall in love with Mila Anderson? Mila Anderson might sometimes be naïve about the ways of the world, but as a wife, she wasn't lacking.

Gian Horne's face turned bright red with shame at his mother's words, and he dared not say a word.

The old lady glared at him a while longer but still repeated her stance, "If you don't want a divorce, it's up to your own abilities. If you can keep Mila, then your marriage will be preserved. If you can't hold onto her, then let go. Give each other some breathing space. It's been decades; aren't you tired? Even watching it, I'm exhausted."

Having said her piece, the old lady leaned back into the sofa and closed her eyes to rest, clearly showing she had no intention of helping Gian Horne.

Besides his flushed face and embarrassed expression, Gian Horne couldn't say anything more.

In an instant, the vast and magnificent hall fell quiet.

Just outside Golden Kirin Garden was a major highway, one of numerous branch roads of T City's Central Street. Because Golden Kirin Garden was the most upscale residential area in T City, quite a few shops lined the highway, forming a short street. This street was less than two kilometers long, and a drive through it would leave the brief stretch behind in mere minutes.

But though the street was short, it was lined with all sorts of businesses: supermarkets, small coffee shops, tea houses, mid-sized markets, and entertainment venues. Business was neither booming nor bad. While the prices charged were several times higher than elsewhere, they didn't lose money. However, if several more businesses of the same kind were to open, one was bound to do poorly, eventually failing over time. As people tended to follow trends, seeing others make money with certain types of shops and opening similar ones themselves, competition intensified. Nearly every month, some shops were squeezed out by competitors, and their ownership transferred. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

Mila Anderson was driving with Julia Bluen in the car. She had said that since Julia was pregnant, it was safer for her to drive. Julia didn't insist, so the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law left Golden Kirin Garden in the same car.

Following behind them was another sedan, naturally carrying their bodyguards.

They drove slowly, both women scanning either side of the road for any shops listed for transfer. They passed through this short street every day but had never paid much attention to the businesses lining the road.

It wasn't until they had almost reached the end of the street that Julia finally noticed a medium-sized supermarket with a "For Transfer" sign. The short street, less than two kilometers long, already had three medium-sized supermarkets selling essential household supplies, various snacks, children's toys, and more. The one looking to transfer was the farthest from the Golden Kirin Garden entrance and thus did the poorest business. Coupled with the competition, they could no longer sustain operations and had decided to transfer the business.

"Mom, there's a place!" Julia exclaimed excitedly the moment she saw the "For Transfer" sign.

Mila Anderson turned her head in Julia's direction, then drove to the supermarket with the transfer sign and parked in front of it.

The mother-in-law and daughter-in-law entered the supermarket, followed by their four bodyguards.

Most shop owners and staff in the area could recognize the wealthy residents of Golden Kirin, especially members of the Horne Family. Seeing Mila Anderson and Julia Bluen walk in, the supermarket manager quickly stood up from the cash register, came around it, and approached them with a smile. "Mrs. Horne, Young Mrs. Horne," he inquired, "may I ask what you would like to purchase, or are you just browsing?"

Mila Anderson remained silent, glancing at Julia beside her. Julia offered the manager a faint smile and stated their purpose.

Hearing they were there to discuss the transfer, the manager's smile widened. I can finally unload this losing business! he thought. And since they're two ladies from the powerful and wealthy Horne Family—a prominent family in this city, wielding both power and fortune—I must make a killing and recoup all my past losses in one go!
