Chapter 16: First Invention

Seraph breathed against something soft. His eyelids trembled, and his hands tightened around his pillow.

’Pillow?’

He frowned inwardly. That thing seemed too organic to be a pillow. This realization made him fully awake, and he realized where he was.

He was in his room, cuddling with his elder sister. His arms were wrapped around her waist, while she pressed his face against her bosom.

["Incest!"]

Halo screamed from within, its voice carrying a teasing edge. Seraph rolled his eyes, but remained unmoving.

’I guess I fainted from stress yesterday.’

That was probably the reason why Yelena had dragged him to bed and cuddled him. After all, this was her promise to him when he was younger.

["Tch... you both know that’s outdated. You’re both mature now!"]

Halo complained.

’Shut it. I’m merely ten years of age.’

Suddenly, Halo’s voice became sarcastic. ["Thinking of it... you’re really shameless. A 45 year-old man like you cuddling with a 15 year-old girl. You’re really a pedophile!"]

The accusation stunned Seraph. He pursed his lips, then rolled off the bed. Before Halo could get smug, he countered with a smile.

’Isn’t it better than someone who peeks on an adult anytime he is bathing or changing clothes?’

The system went silent, seemingly admitting guilt. Instead of retorting, it tactically changed the topic.

["But are you truly going to ignore the fact that your sister is—"]

"Enough." Seraph said calmly, his voice full of seriousness. "Don’t ever touch the matter again."

["Fine. Then shouldn’t you be checking out your latest invention?"]

He nodded, then stood up from the bed. Yelena was still asleep for unknown reasons, so he didn’t want to disturb her.

Carrying a box loaded with materials, he exited his room and went to the courtyard, under a shed his father had built for their relaxation.

The sun had barely risen, and the early birds were chirping on the scattered trees. In that bright atmosphere, Seraph allowed himself to breathe in some fresh air.

Then he opened the box, carrying out some strange materials—at least to the people of this world.

Wires made from thin malleable metal and covered in rubber material, a Luminous Spirit Orb, a few Lightning Ore, and a full can of Corrosive Spirit Fluid.

The Luminous Spirit Orb would serve as the main conduit of his experiment, confirming his theory. He picked up the dark purple ores, then gently dipped them into the can filled with Corrosive Spirit Fluid.

This particular fluid was usually secreted by a Horntooth beast, having the same properties as an acid. The ores slowly sank into the thick black liquid, eventually disappearing within.

Seraph took two thin strips of the wire, removing the rubber at the two ends of both wires. Then, he drilled two thin holes into the bottom side of the transparent Spirit Orb. He curved the top ends of the wires, then inserted a wire into each hole.

’As long as they touch each other, it should be enough.’

He turned the wires inside the orb, until their curved ends hooked each other.

Satisfied, he closed up the little openings left on the orb by melting some rubber on them. The moment it dried and the wires couldn’t be retracted, he grabbed the other ends of the wires.

["This is really something simple. I wonder why the idiots in this world haven’t thought of it."] Halo quipped.

"Oh, shush it. I’m only doing this using my knowledge from Earth."

Ignoring the system, he dipped the two wires straight into the can of corrosive fluids.

The wires would have melted, just like the first time he had tried. However, after researching with the blacksmiths, he finally found a suitable metal that wouldn’t be destroyed upon contact with acid.

["Woah! So you made wires from that metal? Amazing!"]

Once again ignoring Halo’s sarcastic remark, Seraph turned his attention to the Luminous Spirit Orb. This orb was special in a sense that it could absorb light from the surroundings during the day, then release that light at night.

Now however, the orb was being used for another purpose. As the current generated from the can passed through the wires, the two ends hooked against each other inside the orb began glowing.

They turned a scalding white, bright and illuminating.

Seraph didn’t immediately rejoice, studying them for some minutes for any changes. Finally, after about ten minutes, he heaved a sigh of relief.

The wires were made of metal with very high melting point. Thankfully, the current from the can wasn’t enough to make them reach their melting point.

’In other words, it is the perfect material.’

"Seraph? What are you... oh my!"

Kara; his mother, appeared from the backdoor, surprised to find him squatting before a bright orb of light.

"This... Seraph, what’s that?"

She asked, walking over to him with curiosity in her eyes. The boy calmly replied with an easygoing smile. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

"This is something I invented." He half-lied, "It’s called a light bulb."

Kara turned to the orb of light, amazed. "How... how does it work? I mean... it is not like our usual lamps, right? I don’t see smoke or anything."

The usual lamps used in the clan were just like lanterns from Earth, always producing little smoke. However, this particular light bulb didn’t seem to be producing any smoke at all.

"Well, why don’t we carry it inside first? It’d be better if I explain it to everyone."

He said with a smile, then carried the bulb in one hand, and the can in another. His mother followed behind him, a curious and proud expression on her face.

’This is my boy... I’m sure the Patriarch himself would be shocked.’

Seraph went ahead and placed the bulb and the can on the table. Meanwhile, Kara went to wake her husband and daughter, calling them to come witness the greatness of Seraph’s invention.

["You know, it’s a bit of a lie calling it an invention. You’re merely using someone else’s idea."]

Seraph shrugged without concern.

’Who cares? Michael Faraday didn’t have access to Corrosive Spirit Fluids or Lightning Ores, no?’

As he stood at the head of the table, he was reminded of his days back on Earth when he wanted to defend his project.

’Wait. I don’t really remember much?’

He suddenly frowned.
