Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Caught by the Police

Elaine received an urgent call from Mr. White during a storm and rushed back to The White Family.

"What’s the matter?"

Mr. White sat behind the tea table, with Cillian Grant opposite him, sitting upright, "Is Eleanor with you?"

Elaine plopped down next to Mr. White, swinging her legs, "No, she’s been busy with the 996 work schedule at the company lately, no time to hang out with me."

Mr. White glanced at Cillian and set her legs down, "Has Eleanor contacted you?"

"Yeah." Elaine eagerly pulled out her phone, looking up her call logs, "This afternoon she was bawling her eyes out—missing dad, biased mom, tyrannical siblings, and she’s the shattered one left behind."

Mr. White felt his blood pressure rise, covering her mouth quickly.

But it was too late, Cillian was rubbing the edge of his teacup, "I’m speaking nicely out of respect for your father, not because I’m naturally soft-spoken."

Mr. White gave a dry laugh, trying to smooth things over, "Just small complaints between girls, my silly daughter took it seriously."

Cillian glanced at Mr. White, "She’s naive, so Eleanor is cunning and talkative?"

Mr. White was speechless, awkwardly apologized, "I misspoke, Vice Director Grant, please forgive me."

Elaine shook off his hand, her attitude sharp, "Are you a spirited trash bag, putting on an act? You kicked Eleanor out of The Grant Family, and now you’re pretending to protect her, is this entertaining to you?"

Cillian scrutinized her expression for a few seconds before suddenly standing up. Perhaps it was the change in angle, but Elaine saw the sudden burst of outrage and anger in his eyes.

"Where is she?"

Elaine felt baffled but refused to back down, standing up to glare at him without uttering a word.

Just as the atmosphere was stiff and dangerous, Cillian’s phone rang. He glanced at it, then set it down.

His expression was unreadable, his voice oscillating between cold and deep, seemingly rationally calm but perhaps frighteningly angry.

Yet his ability to control his emotions was so strong that, upon deeper probing, that flash of outrage vanished, leaving only a pair of emotionless, cold eyes fixed on her.

"Did you go to the company to find her at noon, and met Damian Sinclair’s secretary?"

Elaine was dumbfounded for a few seconds, then reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, "Were you following me?"

Then she realized, "No, you investigated me."

"Not denying is an admission." A faint yet sharp smile appeared at the corners of Cillian’s mouth, "So she went to find Damian Sinclair?"

Elaine pursed her lips and sat down, picking up Mr. White’s teacup to disguise her emotions, "It seems Damian Sinclair’s name can’t be washed away; you can link him to everything. The diversity of life is vividly embodied in you siblings."

Mr. White kicked her leg under the table as a warning.

Cillian’s gaze stayed on Elaine. His wheat-colored skin and black suit should have made him look dull, but instead, it brought out a fierce, wild aggression in him.

At this moment, with no pretenses, one look was enough to make one’s heart skip.

"If Damian Sinclair is involved, she’s gone abroad," he declared, then asked, "What time is the flight?"

"What abroad, what flight," Elaine’s heart raced, "I don’t understand what you’re talking about?"

Mr. White slapped her shoulder, indicating she should notice Cillian’s expression, "Families quarrel, it’s all normal stuff, don’t get involved in the nonsense, just be honest." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Elaine shrugged off Mr. White’s hand, "Dad, why are you siding with someone dubious, throwing mud at your daughter, I—"

There was a tinge of chaos, no substance.

Cillian strode out, Mr. White hurriedly getting up to see him off.

The man’s back had already passed through and disappeared at the entrance with flowering curtains.

Mr. White stood at the entrance, Elaine following behind him.

The tail lights of the car, a burning orange, were quickly swallowed by the night, yet she felt uneasy inside.

Mr. White turned around, patted her shoulder with a sigh, "You foolish girl, with your level, you can’t even handle me, let alone think of competing with him. It’s a trap, dear..."

Elaine felt a shiver run down her spine at the trembling note in his voice, "I didn’t say anything."

"This isn’t about giving evidence; whether you say it or not doesn’t matter. A micro expression is enough."

Elaine froze, immediately fiddling with her phone.

Mr. White remained calm, as if he didn’t even need to look, "It’s not completely exposed, I covered up the health check thing for you, consider this a temporary leave."

Elaine felt tingles on her scalp, "You know?"

"Nonsense, if I didn’t know, when Cillian Grant retrieved the surveillance that day, you two would’ve been found out."

Mr. White clasped his hands behind his back, walking back, "Since he suspected, you think it’s merely about checking surveillance? And the health check, Mrs. Grant had people check, and Cillian did too, both before and after. It was still me who threw that Sinclair kid under the bus to divert attention, and that’s how it ended."

Elaine felt a chill run from head to toe.

So much intrigue behind the health check, what about the black clinic? Damian Sinclair’s secretary was already investigated; can Eleanor’s pregnancy and whereabouts still be concealed?

...

Eleanor had similar thoughts, the stack of paper cranes in her pocket felt like they were on fire, burning her with unease.

By chance, her whereabouts seemed aligned.

But her pregnancy had become a ticking time bomb.

Eleanor opened the comments, leaving a message.

"I didn’t leave the country as part of Damian Sinclair’s plan. This time having a daughter, I want to handle it myself. My pregnancy is highly likely to be exposed. The previously told Trilliant County is too close, the risk is high, I won’t stay long. As for where I’m going, don’t worry, I have many backup plans, and will tell you once things settle."

She intended to write a few more lines to ease Elaine’s mind.

The vehicle suddenly slammed on the brakes, sending Eleanor lurching forward, her upper body crashing into the back of the front seat, her cheek burning with pain.

The car was filled with voices of complaint, the driver had no time to apologize.

The door opened, and two traffic police officers got on.

"Were all passenger documents checked upon boarding?"

"Of course they were," the driver replied righteously, "We at AnTong are awarded exemplary enterprise at the city level every year, whether it’s policy or regulations, we actively respond and strictly comply."

"Alright, we’ve received an urgent notice today; performing a routine document check." The traffic police officer smiled, addressing the passengers loudly, "Please have your documents ready in advance, thank you for your cooperation."

As the police officer mentioned documents, Eleanor had already crouched down.

She wasn’t very tall and was slim enough to barely squeeze under the seat; however, it couldn’t completely shield her body.

It was fine if the officers didn’t come to the back row, but once they did, she had no place to hide.

The sound of footsteps, voices, inching closer, Eleanor’s back broke out in cold sweat.

Up front, seeing that most passengers had their documents, the driver relaxed and chatted with the police officer, "With this wind and rain, it’s so cold, and you have to work, is there an urgent notice because a leader is coming for an inspection?"

The traffic police were familiar with these transportation drivers.

Though names were forgotten, they might have smoked together at some point.

With passengers’ documents in order, the officer’s tone grew more congenial, "No leader, no inspection, just an urgent notice."

Eleanor’s heart skipped a beat; before she could think more, footsteps had reached the front row.

"Please show your documents."

"Thank you for your cooperation."

One by one, the front row quickly finished their checks.

Footsteps sounded again; Eleanor tried to shrink further inside but was met with solid, unyielding space.

She was gripped by immense fear.
