Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 74 First Challenge
Two weeks went by in a flash for Avery. He spent pretty much every waking moment training with Kasandra and Kaiden or figuring out strategies to give him an advantage over Ezra.
It had been grueling work to say the least. At some points he thought that it was worse than what he had gone through during his time learning under Urs.
Kaiden especially reveled in the chance to fight Avery and take out the frustrations he had built up him.
While they had buried the hatchet so to speak, Avery had essentially taken away Kaiden’s only family and closest friend when Kasandra decided to stick with him. Fortunately, with Kaiden joining up with them, the majority of their issues had been resolved. He had even given begrudging approval of Avery’s relationship with his sister.
"To think that Yuson Prime would have a facility like this."
Avery had followed the directions on his terminal to the location that Ezra had sent him and found himself standing in front of a massive training facility.
It was far larger than anything within the Mercenary Association branch on the colony and possessed some of the most sophisticated technology currently available for combat training.
"Apparently, while it’s privately owned, it’s mostly used by the Alliance Police. Of course, some mercenaries take advantage of it as well. Like we are today." Kasandra said, reading off the information she had quickly looked up on her tablet.
Kaiden simply stood next to her without saying anything. A characteristic scowl on his face.
Still, Avery already knew that Kaiden was rooting for him. The man had gotten a bit drunk last night when they had a small party to raise their spirts and spilled his true feelings to Avery.
With a deep breath, Avery calmed his nerves and took the lead into the building.
Inside, he found that Ezra was already waiting for him.
It only took a single glance to tell that the clothes he was wearing were lightweight, durable, and meant for battle. Honestly, seeing him again after two weeks only reinforced just how imposing Ezra really was. He looked like the spitting image of the kind of person in a holonovel that could charge into an army and fight his way through unscathed.
"It is good to see you again, Avery. I imagine that you’ve already had all of the gear you’re planning to use sent over?" Ezra said.
"Yeah, Kasandra took care of all that for me. It should be waiting in one of the building’s storage areas."
Since they were going to be both testing their shooting skills and abilities in combat, there was far too much equipment for either of them to comfortably haul around on their person.
Thankfully, the colony’s good’s transport network was able to easily bring whatever items they needed to the building and have it ready and waiting for them.
"And you have someone else with you today. I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure." Ezra said, turning his gaze towards Kaiden.
In response, Kaiden simply glared at Ezra. He was naturally a bit peeved at the four star mercenary, since his sudden challenge to Avery had thrown things into disarray right after he had pledged to be Avery’s subordinate. Now there was a possibility he might have to work under Ezra instead should Avery lose.
"This is Kaiden, he’s Kassandra’s brother and a member of my squad." Avery said, performing the introduction since it was clear that Kaiden had no intention.
"Well, he seems capable enough. I won’t mind if he comes with us after I win."
"Why are you talking like things are already decided?" Kaiden growled.
"Because those that envision any chance of failure are bound to manifest it at some point. So long as I believe that I will win, then I am confident that my mind and body will not falter."
Ezra responded to Kaiden’s hostility calmly, and there was little that he could say against the words of wisdom that Ezra had just spoken.
Of course, he was not belittling Avery. This was simply the philosophy that he lived by in order to always be at his best.
"I can’t see myself losing either. So, let’s see which of us is truly the best." Avery said confidently.
A slight smirk formed on Ezra’s lips at this, and he ushered Avery along with Kasandra and Kaiden towards the facility that he had prepared for this competition.
For this day, he had rented an entire floor with a massive augmented reality, also known as AR, training facility.
The room was capable of generating lifelike targets and enemies, which was perfect for the shooting challenge they would be doing first.
"These are certainly more sophisticated that the stuff they have at the Mercenary Association training rooms." Avery mused as he put on the visor that would allow him to see the room’s AR creations.
"That’s only natural. This facility has the most recent generation of technology, while association branches typically only buy surplus models that are three to four generations old. That’s not to say that there equipment is bad, but I’m sure that you’ll be able to tell the difference once we get started."
Once he had given this explanation, Ezra accessed a panel on the far side of the wall and entered his access code into it.

Around a half minute later, a panel in the wall opened up, and inside were two massive laser pistols.
’I don’t think I could hold one of those with both hands, let alone dual wield them.’ Avery thought after seeing Ezra’s weapons of choice.
Calling his guns hand cannons felt like an apt despeciation. Each one of them had been custom made for Ezra, and it was obvious that they had incredible firepower for one handed weapons.
Not to be outdone, Avery sent a request to retrieve his own weapons.
Another thrifty seconds later, and the panel in front of him slid apart to reveal three new guns. All of which were top of the line and which Avery recently purchased just for this competition.
