Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary-Chapter 100 Phregon III’s Mercenary Association
"Whew, that certainly took a while." Avery said, stretching his hands above his head as he exited the Dauntless.
Thanks to the immense amount of traffic that Phregon III was currently receiving, it had taken nearly two hours for Avery, Ezra, and Kaiden’s docking request to be approved.
Still, they had finally managed to get their ships into open spaces within the hangers and land on the massive trading colony.
Their first stop was naturally the Mercenary Association branch. It was customary for mercenaries to check in whenever they arrived at a new place in case they needed to be called upon for an emergency. Similar to how Ezra had been asked to join the energy lifeform hunt. This was especially true for any four star or higher-ranking mercenary since there were so few of them.
When Avery entered the large association building that was easily five times the size of the one he was used to on Yuson II, several curious gazes turned his way.
He had his entire team with him, so most of the stares went towards Ezra, Kasandra, or Jasmine for obvious reasons.

Naturally, any halfway decent mercenary was able to tell that Avery’s group was an imposing force not to be messed with.
’It seems that having Kaiden and Ezra along makes a big difference in the impression we make. When I went to the association branch on Yuson II with just Kasandra and Jasmine, I got quite a few envious and hostile looks.’ Avery thought as he approached an open reception counter.
Behind it was a beautiful woman who appeared to be in her early thirties. She was wearing the usual uniform of a Mercenary Association employee and appeared to be diligent in her duties.
As Avery approached, she put on a bright smile and addressed him.
"I assume that your mercenaries that just arrived. How can I help you?"
"We’re here to collect our rewards and check-in since we’ll be stay for at least a few days." Avery said, handing over his terminal that had his electronic identification pulled up already.
After scanning it, she returned the device to Avery.
She then looked at the information that was displayed on the monitor in front of her, and her eyes went wide.
"It’s not often that we get such renowned individual such as you, Captain Avery. And I assume that the large fellow behind you is Captain Ezra?"
Since they were all registered as one mercenary group, the receptionist took Ezra’s and Kaiden’s terminals and scanned their information as well.
With practiced hands she entered keystrokes into the computer in front of her and processed their recently completed request.
"Everything has been confirmed, so the payment should have been sent to your accounts."
Immediately the five of them checked their terminals to make sure that the money had arrived, and because they were curious about how much the bonus that Svantur had promised would be.
Avery found that he had received an extra two million Krenin on top of what he earned for the twenty-two days of guard duty.
This nearly doubled the job’s pay and saw his account fattening up a bit more. Though he was still far from having enough to purchase what he was currently after and would bring his mercenary group up to the next level.
’That brings the total amount up to four million three hundred ten thousand. With Kasandra getting around a hundred twenty-nine thousand from that, and Jasmine receiving a bit more than sixty-four thousand.’ Avery thought, quickly running the math in his head.
While it may have seemed that he was getting a disproportional amount of the money, it simply came down to his ownership of the Dauntless.
Of course, neither Kasandra nor Jasmine thought that they were being treated unfairly, and in fact, one of them was immensely surprised.
"I used to earn only nine and a half thousand Krenin a month! How did I end up getting nearly seven times that in just twenty-two days?!" Jasmine shouted, a shocked expression on her face.
As a sergeant in the Alliance Police, her pay had been quite good compared to the average colony job. It was not going to fund living in the lap of luxury, but it was more than enough for any and all essentials while being able to save up a decent amount.
Yet in less than a month, she had earned more than what she used to get in half a year.
"This is just something that you’ll need to get used to as a mercenary. We have the potential to earn a lot of money since we’re often taking on big risks. Though, it’s in large part thanks to Avery and Ezra’s prestige that we we’re able to earn this much." Jasmine explained.
Most mercenary groups would have a hard time getting paid the same amount that they had. Their group had two four star mercenaries in it, and Avery had received the Silver Cross while Ezra had received a Ruby Star. These prestigious awards made them more trustworthy and desirable for any potential clients.
Once Jasmine had calmed down, Avery turned his attention back towards the receptionist for his next request.
"Since we just finished one escort mission, we’re looking for another. Preferably one that will take us to the Dramid System or at least in the right direction."
"I see. Heading to the capital. I suppose that every great mercenary wants to go there at some point."
Swiftly the receptionist searched through the branch’s job list, but she eventually frowned when nothing fitting Avery’s parameters came up anytime soon.
"In about two and a half weeks, a small fleet of sixteen passenger ships will be arriving to drop off perspective colonists planning to live on the newly terraformed world. Their normal route will see them heading back to the Parous System which is less than ten light years from the Dramid System. I can’t say for certain yet, but this company has always requested guards from us whenever they stop by to drop off passengers. It’s a bit of a long wait, but that’s the only option I can offer you at this moment." The receptionist said apologetically.
A frown formed on Avery’s lips when he heard this. He had been planning to stick around in the Phregon System for five days at most.
’It’s not like we need to pick up any work here. It would be easy enough to just head straight over to the Dramid System or stop somewhere on the way and look for something that would bring us to the capital.’
However, before Avery could make up his mind with what to do, the receptionist made him another offer.
"If you not in too much of a hurry, we would very much appreciate it if you stuck around. There has been an increase in pirate activity thanks to all the good and people being brought into the system, and any help we can get would be appreciated. Of course, seeing as how your group has two four stars and you’ve both been given prestigious awards, the Phregon III association branch will make sure to prioritize you when considering high paying jobs."
While the receptionist was doing her best to remain professional, Avery could see a hint of desperation in her eyes.
She may have been making it sound like she was giving him a good offer, but what it really amounted to was that there were not enough upper ranking mercenaries around.
Just like mercenaries needed to manage their reputations, so did individual branches of the association. The stronger the mercenaries active within a system, the more favorably people would see the Mercenary Association. Well, so long as the mercenary in question was not one to cause trouble themselves.
Avery’s group may not have been the best in the Alliance, but that did not change the fact that they were experiential compared to average mercenaries. Any system would be happy to have them working in the area.
"I can’t make any promises now but send us a list of available jobs and I’ll discuss things with my team." Avery responded.
The receptionist brightened up when she heard this, and she hastily composed a list of the most appealing requests that were asking for a four star or higher ranked mercenary. Something that very few people in the Phregon System could currently fulfill.
With their business finished, the five of them exited the building and headed to a nearby restaurant.
"You sure that you want to treat us all at such a fancy place?" Ezra asked after looking at the prices on the menu.
Avery had picked out one of the finest establishments on the station. They were even serving dishes that incorporated some of the local flora and fauna collected from Drahanus before the terraforming process began.
"Yeah, it’ll be fine. We’ve been couped up for the last twenty-two days, so I figured we could let loose and enjoy ourselves a bit. Plus, after what we just got paid, a single fancy meal will hardly break the bank." Avery said jovially.
For now, their small mercenary group enjoyed a moment of rest and leisure. Unaware of the plots in the background of the Phregon System that they were soon to be embroiled in.
