PAMPERED BY MY THREE BROTHERS: THE RETURN OF THE NEGLECTED HEIRESS-Chapter 1784: Stick to the comms
Chapter 1784: Stick to the comms
Meanwhile, in the original place where Zoren’s group had originally planned to dock, the three groups who had parted from the main group to dock there sat around. All of them were panting, with at least three of them injured.
"You guys alright?" one of the men asked, eyes on his comrades.
The person he was looking at winced a little but nodded. "Was grazed, but fine. It’s not going to kill me."
"It’s been a while since we’ve been deployed on a mission, and here we are," one of them uttered, his voice mixed with amusement and sarcasm. "Talk about disbandment."
"At this point, we might not get disbanded, but die instead."
"That’s up to you if you let that happen," another one mused.
Upon hearing that, all of them fell silent and let out heavy breaths. Their eyes then fell on their surroundings, filled with men—enemies—they had taken down in an ambush.
"There’s a mole, that’s for sure. It’s just not in our group," one of them muttered. "We should start moving and find a way to regroup with the main group."
"Yeah?" another one spoke, already standing with a pair of binoculars in hand. "Well, I guess we should start crawling. More are coming in here."
Everyone looked at the last speaker and shifted their eyes to where he was looking. They all knew it wasn’t over yet because this ambush was not only meant to stop a few men, but Zoren’s entire group.
Someone on this island was making sure Zoren would die even before they got further into the island.
---
Meanwhile...
Taking the route Zoren had told them, three trucks made their way through the quiet woods. One of the trucks’ headlights was broken, while the other wasn’t working. Considering these trucks had simply been looted from the groups the soldiers had blended in with, signs of battles were evident on the vehicles.
Zoren kept his eyes down, clutching a handle in the back of the open truck. The road was rough, making them bounce every few seconds. However, they all traveled in silence.
In this silence, Zoren couldn’t help but recall the aircraft that had exploded.
If Penny had other plans, she would’ve told him first. However, he didn’t want to entertain the thought that he had lost his wife.
’She’s somewhere here,’ he told himself. ’She lived two lifetimes... she probably just didn’t have time to inform me.’
Zoren clenched his teeth, his grip on the handle tightening.
Meanwhile, Atlas was also quiet, unfazed by the rocky road they were taking. When he glanced up, he caught the dark look plastered on Zoren’s face. Hugo, on the other hand, sat next to him. But unlike them, Hugo seemed to have shunned any thought of the aircraft previously.
Just like all of them, Hugo was in the most denial, treating this as if everything was part of the plan.
Improvisation—that was what everything was about.
Not that anyone could blame him. Even Atlas was guilty of the same denial. After all, if they accepted that Penny had been in that craft, their morale would not just dip. It would disappear all at once.
As they moved in silence, getting through the dark woods to avoid gathering attention, they suddenly heard a loud rotor sound. Everyone—even the drivers of each vehicle—gazed up.
There, they caught a helicopter flying over the forest they were in. Due to how low it was flying, it made them slow down. However, the noise it was creating was enough to draw everyone’s attention.
"Who is in there?" Hugo wondered to himself, his brows furrowing. "That chopper... I think I’ve seen it somewhere."
"It’s the Prime Group’s," Angel, Atlas, and Zoren answered in unison.
Even with that, they didn’t take their eyes off the helicopter. Those three—Angel, Atlas, and Zoren—were aware of every vehicle Penny owned. One, because Angel had worked for Penny before he was deployed to Zoren. And Zoren and especially Atlas had ridden in it many times before.
"But you’re right," Atlas muttered, snapping his eyes at Hugo. "The question is, who’s in there?"
"Could it be Uncle Wild?" Zoren guessed, but Angel, who was in the front, looked back at them.
"Uncle Wild used to be wild, but he’s not that careless," Angel replied. "He wouldn’t fly that low and garner that much attention to himself. He’s also not young anymore."
Upon saying that, they were back to the original question again: Who was in that chopper?
Who was crazy enough to fly so low like that, as if it were almost nosediving somewhere? Who was crazy enough to garner that attention as if they lacked it all their life?
As those questions ran through their minds, they soon concluded there was one crazy person in this operation.
Of course, it wasn’t Penny.
She might be crazy, and they would surely keep that thought to their graves, but Penny’s whereabouts were still unknown. They didn’t even know if she was alive, and if she were, she would’ve been in this place. That was if she had foreseen the missile that had blown her aircraft to smithereens.
That narrowed it down to one person.
"Mint," Hugo blurted out, watching everyone glance at him as if he had just spoken everyone’s guess. freeweɓnøvel~com
All of them nodded before Hugo turned his back on them.
"Gear up!" he yelled at the trucks behind them. "We’re picking up speed!"
Hearing this, those on the trucks prepared to rev up their engines and pick up the pace. As for Angel, he yelled at the front to relay the message. Their earpieces weren’t working anymore, and their other methods of communication were suspected to be tampered with, so they could only shout.
"Hey!!" Angel yelled, but nothing. The guys on the truck ahead of them couldn’t hear him because of the noise from the chopper and their trucks.
He hissed and turned to the driver’s seat, where Mark was. "We need to catch up to them."
But just as they said that, the radio clipped on Angel’s hip produced a static noise. Angel was about to turn it off or toss it away when he heard someone’s familiar voice.
"Hey, hey! Can you hear me?!"
Angel quickly pressed a button and drew the device near his mouth. "Uncle Wild, it’s me. I don’t think we should be using—"
"Yugi and the Prime Group are already overriding the other signals connected to these things," Wild remarked. "He is working with Haines and Lester over here. Just saying these things are now safe to use. However, if other moles hold the same device, they might be listening. So, use it with caution."
Wild didn’t waste a second letting them know of their efforts in recovering everyone’s communication. At the same time, those receiving this radio transmission didn’t hesitate to speak about their situation.
"This is the separate team from Point A," said someone from the group that had parted with Zoren’s team to confirm their original docking point. "Three of us are down—injured from an ambush at the docking site, but we managed to escape."
Hearing this report, Angel looked back at everyone in the back. This confirmed their suspicion, and if Hugo hadn’t changed plans at the last minute, they would’ve gotten caught as well.
There were more who had taken advantage of the recovered communication, telling them what group they were with and their situation. However, none of them dared to give out their exact location for safety reasons.
Angel nodded. "Thanks, Uncle Wild."
"Don’t thank me," Wild answered. "The credit goes to the guys in here. Anyway, we’ll be sending out drones soon to keep track of your locations and the situation on the island."
"Yes—" Angel didn’t dwell on it as he shouted, "You guys in the front—we’re picking up speed. Go with the plan. We’re doing it early!"
With that, the truck ahead of them honked in response, steering slowly to the side. The one behind them also veered into the other lane. At the same time, Mint’s voice came through.
"In the chopper," she said. "Stick to the comms."
She paused as she gazed at the area. "Men, follow where I am and meet me here. I see a parade over there... and I’m crashing this thing in their faces."
