Chapter 498: Chapter 501: I Know You Like Me

She didn’t want to be a burden, holding him back...

"I’m fine. Come up," Thomas Shannon ordered in a low voice.

Sophie Sullivan didn’t hesitate any longer and climbed onto his back.

Thomas Shannon carried her, walking forward step by step.

"Thomas Shannon... why are you so good to me?" Sophie mumbled, her voice muffled as she lay on his shoulder.

He was a Young Master, accustomed to his high status; there was absolutely no need for him to tire himself out like this. He could have easily cast her aside, this burden, and walked away on his own. But he hadn’t. He hadn’t abandoned her, nor had he disdained her...

Thomas Shannon simply smiled without speaking. Sophie tightened her arm around his neck with one hand and, with the other, gently wiped the sand and dust from his face.

She gazed intently at his profile. "I know you like me."

Thomas Shannon: "..."

"No need to deny it. I know better than anyone whether you like me or not."

Thomas Shannon: "..."

"Thomas Shannon, why aren’t you talking?"

Thomas Shannon chuckled softly. "You could try being quiet for a bit. Save your energy, conserve water."

"Are you saying I’m wasting my breath?"

Sophie rested her chin on his shoulder and suddenly sighed, "I’m so hungry..."

She looked up at the vast sand dunes. It was hard even to determine their direction, let alone think about crossing this desert.

"Let’s go back and search. Maybe we can find the food and water we left behind."

"Do you know the way?" Sophie was surprised.

"I know the general direction."

Walking through the sand dunes was tough, mostly a series of ascents and descents. Sophie watched as fine beads of sweat formed on Thomas Shannon’s forehead.

She couldn’t bear to see it. She raised her hand to wipe the sweat away for him.

"How rare..." Thomas Shannon scoffed.

Sophie lowered her hand. "Instead of joking, you should be thinking about how we’re going to get out of this hellhole."

"Don’t worry. If they can’t reach me, someone will come to rescue us."

"Then when will they come?" A rare smile touched the corners of Sophie’s mouth.

"Maybe in three days, maybe five."

Three days... Five days... With food and water, that would be perfectly fine. But right now, they had no water and nothing to eat. Surviving in the desert itself was becoming a challenge, let alone waiting three to five days for the bodyguards to come and rescue them. By the time the bodyguards arrived, they’d have long been dead in the desert.

"We’re done for..." Sophie sighed sorrowfully.

Thomas Shannon turned his head to look at her as she lay on his shoulder. "What’s ’done for’?"

"I’m afraid I’m going to die here with you."

Thomas Shannon stated arrogantly, "Dying with me is your honor. Countless women would beg for such a chance."

"Like Raina Bell, for instance?"

Thomas Shannon: "..."

This conversation couldn’t continue. He found it hard to deal with this jealous little maniac.

She didn’t know how long they had been walking when Sophie heard Thomas Shannon’s weary gasps. She felt even more guilty. "Thomas Shannon, put me down. I’ll walk on my own."

Thomas Shannon said nothing, continuing to carry her through the vast desert.

The scorching sun hung high in the sky, baking the desert below.

The sand, heated to an unbearable temperature, seemed to assail them from all directions.

Sweat streamed down continuously. If they didn’t rehydrate soon, dehydration would be imminent...

"Thomas Shannon, why don’t you take a break for a while?"

"I’m fine."

Sophie struggled, trying to get off his back. "Don’t just tell me to conserve energy; you need to as well! What will I do if you collapse?"

"Don’t worry. I told you I wouldn’t let you die here, and I will keep my word."

The man’s deep voice was filled with unwavering determination.
